Well. Bad news. We aren't getting color customization options anytime soon. But, (Good news!) one our staffers, Karen has been so very kind to make a tutorial on how to use Firefox to change the colors of the new PHP Forums so we can all browse without bleeding eyes. All Hail Karen. And, the line for the angry mob forms to the right of...the Community Forum. :scared: AgentSmith

thing is, AS, that is NOT a fix. you change the colours here, you change them for EVERY site you goto. Not Acceptable.

AgentSmith ( ) posted Thu, 06 April 2006 at 8:05 AM

I do understand. At the very least, I hope we can have tutorials for other browsers, so that people can use their favorite browser for everything, and a different one for Renderosity. And, I know how that sounds. And, again I will understand when you say that is also unacceptable. As always, anyone is VERY welcome to discuss/rant about any issues here in the Bryce Forum. But, I would also suggest, any suggestions or citique about the new PHP also be discussed in the Community Forum. It is the closest and quickest ear any member will have to the rest of the staff. oh I am complaining there. I just don't think it's right for snakeoil fixes to be spread around, thats all. the information gathered by Karen, ain't a fix. and so far, I seem to be the only person pointing out that it changes everysite you goto...! and in this day and age, telling ppl to get another browser just for ONE site? who do rendo think they are? Bill Gates? sorry... that's just plain insulting to anyone with an IQ higher than a glass of water.

Wouldnt be happy about it, but i could actually see myself installing FF just for Renderosity purposes. But jokes aside, they really need to create a far better layout than this. Kinda looks like the early days of internet. :)

That esssplains why I didn't find a place to change the colors on my home page, there's no 'manage' page settings....=(

I am curious as to why the forums were switched over before such an obvious limitation was figured out. In the meantime, surely the programmers are able to globally change the colour scheme to something more appealing than grey on white?

There is now an option to define your own CSS, although I'm not sure how well it works. Personally, I don't mind the colours

Yeah, I remember suggesting that (user CSS) just yesterday. Somebody was listening. :thumbupboth: I've been playing with tweaking some values, but it seems that stuff is so heavily locked up into tables (a bit archaic by current web design standards) that the level of manipulation through CSS is limited. I suppose tables are ok, but who out there still uses a browser old enough to make 'em necessary? Anyone? If it's possible to tweak the main elements so they fit into blocks defined by

and tags, user definable CSS would become quite a powerful thing. (If you don't believe me, go and take a looksie at some of the popular blogging sites out there. Those folks know the versatility of style sheets.)

That line is really amazing. That line really is truly amazing. That line is so amazingly amazing I think I'd like to steal it.

wrong show ;) tis Red Dwarf :) LISTER: Hang on, he can't do this. Holly's got an IQ of six thousand! HOLLY: Yeah. Right on. QUEEG: Is that what he told you? LISTER: Well, what is it, then? QUEEG: It has a six in it, but it's not six thousand. CAT: What is it? QUEEG: Six. HOLLY: Six? Do me a lemon! That's a poor IQ for a glass of water!

Thanks Karen1573 and Agent Smith: I grew real tired of wearing my nightvision sunglasses just to view this site . . . another thing is I'm viewing from a minimum of four feet away so changing the minimum font size to 16 from none is helping my tired eyes too. I think I can remember to use Firefox and uncheck Allow pages to choose their own colors(page 5 of tut) and fonts(page 3 of tut). Not the ideal solution but It'll do until the PTB decide to give us our own BG and text colors. :b_cool: much grass, -TJ

this is going to take a lot of time to figure out, so I'm going to post what I have now and go to bed and then finish it up later. before getting started, the one thing to know is that all color specifications are done with values specified in R, G and B, using "hexadecimal" values. go to this page: http://mediagods.com/tools/rgb2hex.html for a color picker that gives you the hex rgb values. it no longer really matters much, but to get "web safe" colors, specify your R, G and B values with one of the following values: 00, 33, 66, 99, CC, FF. all my test colors will use "web safe" values. so, #000000 is black, #FFFFFF is white, and #FF0000 is bright red, etc. also, all of my test colors are deliberately horrible and hopefully will be different from each other, so that you'll be able to figure out what I'm talking about when I say things like, "the border around the threads list." I basically started with the default css, and poked and poked until I could figure out what each one does. you can see the default css with a link just below the big text entry field on your "my options" page to enter a new one. I'll include each default in dark red bold, followed by a description of what it does, then an alternate in a dark green bold, followed by a description of what it's supposed to do and why it doesn't always work.... ok. onwards! this one: .forum_headline { font-size:22px; font-weight:bold; padding-top:20px; } apparently does nothing on any of the pages that I can figure... these next two: #forum_announcement { border:2px solid #404040; } #forum_announcement td { text-align:center; padding:4px; } refer to the box at the top of each forum, where the banner graphic for each forum is. the default ones here only define the border's color and centering of the text. I changed them to this: #forum_announcement { border:2px solid #CCFFCC; } #forum_announcement td { text-align:center; padding:4px; color:#FFFF00; background-color:#999999; } which puts an ugly pale green (#CCFFCC) XXX border around a mid-grey (#999999) XXX box, with yellow (#FFFF00) XXX text. but here's the first problem I've run into.. specifically, on the Bryce Forum, the text stays black. but on a couple of the other forums I've looked at (MojoWorld, Community Center), the text is correctly set to yellow. so. I guess it depends on how each forum header is set up as to whether the "My Style" can override the text color in that header or not. these next two: #forum_outer_table { border:2px solid #404040; } #forum_outer_table td { padding:1px; } refer to the border around the forums list on the 'forums' page, and the border around the threads list on the 'top of forum' page. I changed them to this: #forum_outer_table { border:2px solid #FF3399; background-color:#CC99CC; } #forum_outer_table td { padding:5px; } which makes the border an ugly bright pink (#FF3399) XXX and then because the padding in the second one is changed to 5px instead of 1px, there's more of the mopey mauve (#CC99CC) XXX showing between the border and the actual forums list / threads list. the mauve also shows up in a thin line between each of the cells of the forums list / threads list. there are almost two dozen more lines in the css, and I already know what several of them do, but it's late here and I want to sleep... I'll have another whack at it in the morning....

Calyxa, thanks, you saved me some work, cause I intended to do something like that. ๐Ÿ‘ The only problem is, as pauljs pointed out, so much formatting is locked into actual elements, and since that takes precedence (or should I say, postcedence ) to the CSS, it's unfortunately hopeless to expect that changing CSS will change much.

Another one is that .forum_message_cell should affect this text you see here. But there's a bug where a table return has a background color set to it for some unknown reason. The fix? Use tr[bgcolor] {background-color: #000000; etc...} in your user css to set the color for this element. (Until that and some other bugs gets fixed.) It will reset the styles for any

I think we'll need to have a freestuff section just for pre-made css styles...
