Subject: OT: User names

almeidap ( ) posted Tue, 11 April 2006 at 9:46 AM · edited Wed, 18 December 2024 at 9:50 PM

Just reading the post about how old the site was and saw one guy/gal mention that they had been there longer but under a different username...my question is how'd you all come up with your usernames? I too had a different username when I first joined but since I had an off and on relationship with Poser (kept uninstalling because I didn't get it) each time I re installed ran back here, I forgot my username and had to start the process all over again...plus not knowing which of the several email accounts I had at the time was assigned to the site. Finally, I started getting the hang of it and because I'm military and whatever internet company I use changes from place to place, I decided to get and stick with a yahoo account so that would always remain constant...for a username I used the same one as my login at work (which never changes) and that's how almeidap came to be...meaning Almeida, Peter

Mine is from my first 'official' email address, that was connected to a studio I started: COPS (which was an abbreviation for Concept Ontwerp Productie Studio: Concept Design Production Studio). 'Hoofdcommissaris' is the dutch world for 'chief of police'. I use that username almost everywhere now. Or my email, if that is what They want. Because most people prefer short names, my username tends to become 'Hoof' a lot of the time. So that is my second nick.

Simple, I just use my forst two initials and my family name. I didn't want something too complicated to be remembered, that way I can avoid difficulties. David P. Hoadley

Before I create a user name I think about it for awhile. I figure it's going to be with me for a long time and I want something that reflects who I am. Plus it has to have certain criteria: 1. Short (I'm dyslexic so long words can be problematic); 2. Sound like a "normal" name (yes I'm square, LOL); The name "Acadia" comes from an important snippet of Canadian history involving French Candadiens and it sounds like a girl's name. So that's how I ended up with "Acadia". The only problem is that people tend to stick an "R" in there to make it ARcadia.

While I was trying to think of a user name,  I was looking at a Martian Manhunter action figure on my desk in front of me.

Evangeline

A Tale of Arcadie by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

from the 1893 Cambridge Edition
(Originally published in 1847)

THIS is the forest primeval. The murmuring pines and the hemlocks, Bearded with moss, and in garments green, indistinct in the twilight, Stand like Druids of eld, with voices sad and prophetic, Stand like harpers hoar, with beards that rest on their bosoms. Loud from its rocky caverns, the deep-voiced neighboring ocean Speaks, and in accents disconsolate answers the wail of the forest. This is the forest primeval; but where are the hearts that beneath it Leaped like the roe, when he hears in the woodland the voice of the huntsman? Where is the thatch-roofed village, the home of Acadian farmers -- Men whose lives glided on like rivers that water the woodlands, Darkened by shadows of earth, but reflecting an image of heaven? Waste are those pleasant farms, and the farmers forever departed! Scattered like dust and leaves, when the mighty blasts of October Seize them, and whirl them aloft, and sprinkle them far o'er the ocean. Naught but tradition remains of the beautiful village of Grand-Pré. Ye who believe in affection that hopes, and endures, and is patient, Ye who believe in the beauty and strength of woman's devotion, List to the mournful tradition still sung by the pines of the forest; List to a Tale of Love in Acadie, home of the happy.

Enjoy, DPH

I ended up with my nick about 20 years ago.  I was working as a disc jockey at a local radio station, and a flu bug hit the staff.  At one point, there were only two of us well enough to be on the air, so the two of us worked six hours on, six hours off, six hours on...

I was working the 12-6 shifts, and after several days of this, we were both getting a little loopy.  One morning at six, I closed out my shift and said "Coming up after the news, it's the World Famous Tony Eli!" (complete with trumpet fanfare).  He got on the other mic and asked "If I'm world famous, then what are you?".  I answered "Well, I work overnight, so I'm only 'Almost Famous' ".

The nickname stuck, and when I got my first e-mail account, I could only use eight letters, so I chose 'almostfm'

From my Rosity Homepage:

"Took my user name because of my band, King Dice; it's from a Bowie song, "Sons of the Silent Age".

Sam Therapy is more than a stage name to me, it's my 'alter ego'; a character I can play when I crank up my guitar and yell. :) "

I use the name (or a variation thereof) on every site where membership is required.

I never could get comfortable addressing a message to someone with a made-up username. My name is Françoise (France is the diminutive form by which I've been called all my life)  Marie Isabelle. When I registered here 2 years ago, the username France was already taken and I couldn't use Françoise because most people don't type the cedilla and make it sound like FranKoise. So I used France M.I.

Acadia... I thought you had chosen your username because of the "Acadiens" but I thought it was because you had some of them in your ancestors. ;o)

Most think my name came from a song when, in fact, it came from my inability to sleep at night. So I spent those long hours into the wee morning online while working in Poser. It's also the only nickname I've ever used and I also use it everywhere.

I've like the phrase "modus operandi", Latin for "mode of operation" ever since I heard it.

And when I was trying to find a name to use for email, it popped into my head, although I felt it was a little long.

So I shortened and it became modus0, which is the name I use for the majority of sights I register at.

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Tue, 11 April 2006 at 5:36 PM

My username. Long story that I've told before when the subject comes up. But since there's always new people around, here it is again 😄

Ern Yoka is my first and very old internet nickname. I came up with it when I was in need of a Star Trek name - it's supposed to be a bajoran name because  I dress up as a bajoran in Star Trek related gatherings.

Then I found Rosity and used it as a username here. Not long after I took a break from Poser and when I came back I'd forgotten whatever password I had used... so I had to sign up again, this time as ernyoka1.

Later on, I got a little tired of it, or rather it didn't quite feel like "me" anymore, so .. I started using TrekkieGrrrl when I signed my pictures, and shortly after I released my first free item, and thoughtlessly used it on the thumbnail.

So all of a sudden I had two names here. My official one, ernyoka1, and my ..er..real name, TrekkieGrrrl. And it turned out that you couldn't change usernames here, so.... since I didn't want to lose my shopping history and other things, I've stuck to the ernyoka1 - but as my avatar signals, I'm TrekkieGrrrl. Or Trekkie as most people call me.

Kirwyn is my middle name and have always been called this by family and close friends.  I figured it was unusual enough, especially with the spelling, so I decided to go with it.  My Mother, from the deep south, wanted her children to have unique names for some reason.  I have two sisters named Voncil and Willena, and a brother named LeRhett.

Jimdoria ( ) posted Wed, 12 April 2006 at 1:30 PM

My Mom and Dad got together to give me the first version of my nick name.

When I got to college, though, one of our friends took to calling everybody by their first and last names as if it was one long name (since we had more than enough Jims and Johns around to cause some confusion, and we were dazed and confused enough as it was.)

I don't know about the others, but in my case it stuck and I'm still called Jimdoria, so that's my primary nickname and my most persistent online identity. (I was jimdoria@aol for a long time until I left AO Hell behind. I kept paying for that stupid service for years just so I could keep the username.)

I have other nicknames I use for anonymous purposes, but they shall remain... um, anonymous. Ahh, the beauty of the Internet. Sadly, the jimdoria.com domain name belongs to some realtor in California. I keep hoping he'll let it lapse...

Been my nickname since I was verrah youngish. For good reason. Certifiably so.

Is not my original nick here, but the one I stuck with.

Original date was in september of 99 I think -- I'd have to look up one of the other threads like this to find out again, lol.

I am part French Canadien, but have no direct ties to the Acadiens, at least to my knowledge.  My Grandfather on my Mother's side hails from someplace in Quebec. My Grandmother on my Father's side is Metis (French and Cree).  The rest of me is Ukrainian and English,  hehe
