I am modelling a street scene, France, 1944/1945, and I need some reference photo's for a French phone booth from this time, and whatever the French equivalent was of the British Red Post Box.

I have tried google, but I think if I had the French names, or knew exactly what I was looking for, it would be easier.

I found one picture of a French phone booth that I think was from that time, and I have no idea what the French post boxes looked like.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Did the French have an equivalent to the famous british Post Box?

Does this look right for France 1944. Any idea what size this will be? Shoebox size? Bigger?

Or this? Again I have no idea what the size is, there is no scale comparison. Has anyone ever seen one of these?

Just found this. Would this be OK for France 1944/45?

This is the internal  french airmail box between 1935 & 1939. The regular mail boxes looked pretty much the same, but colours where different. I carry on searching

Your 1st pict: I've never seen anything like that

Your 2nd pict: some are still in use (in remote places) but I suspect them to be post WW2

You cannot be wrong using the pict of my fist post, but painted in yellow

Have a look at the flash animation intro The last line, in the middle, at the end of the animation You'll see a yellow box which is the same. Dimensions around 60x40x30 cm

Khai ( ) posted Thu, 13 April 2006 at 11:32 AM

as I said.. the first pic is a British Red Phone Box, phased out (except for Historical places of note) during the 1980's and 90's.
you can still find them in Whitehall and a few other places as listed buildings...

We've still got several in my hometown, here in south Devon... not for any historical note, but simply because they're placed too near to walls... if they tried to remove them, they'd bring down half the surounding structure as well!!

Thanks, I have what I need and have started on the postbox. Still no idea whether the French had phone booths.

Thanks Miss Nancy,

My problem is not really finding the images, I have about fifty, the problem I have is knowing what they looked like in 1944, as I can't read French I have no idea which are modern, 1960's etc.

From what I can gather, despite what I have seen in WWII movies, there weren't actually telephone booths in France at that time. The phones in France, from my limited understanding, at this time still worked through an exchange, and phone booths where only introduced in the 1950's, but like I said, I could be wrong in all this.

You are right. At the time, they used to go in a bar, buy a token & use the telephone.

No telephone booth in the streets
