Subject: Preventing threads from floating to the top?

byAnton ( ) posted Thu, 13 April 2006 at 1:31 PM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 4:31 AM

I know there is a way to do it but I am not sure how. I don't mark all as read, so I rather not have threads staty put and not reshuffle. How do....? Any ideas?

Yes. Above the thread list on the Forum page is now a link that says "Sort By Post Date." Select that and threads will stay listed by post date rather than being bumped to the top every time they're responded to. At least that's how it's supposed to work.

p.s. I posted that picture of you, ynsean and SamTherapy in the "Poser Movie In the Making - Something Fun" thread. I hope you don't mind.

You can click on the sort by Post Date. It's beside the page numbers. Is that what your looking for?

You can't set it to stay that way. You will have to click every _____ time you look in the forum.

PoserMovie in the making? I am suddenly frightened. :) Let me go look. If I stop speaking to you, you'll know why. :)

Actually you should try living with threads floating to the top - you may find it's actually a better system once you have got used to it. For a start, it's much easier to keep a discussion going. On the old forum, after two days any thread was DEAD. Now threads that were started over a week ago are still active.

Sometimes, that's a good thing. It depends what people come here for. If it's for socializing and chat, active threads on top is the way to go. If it's for information, chronological is better. When there's a chatty post with hundreds of responses, only a real diehard is going to read every single post, along with the various drifts in subject and leaps to other thoughts. Those are the kinds of subject shifts that are often best served as new topics. Sorting by date tends to force new topics to be new threads or they just die out as part of an old thread. I'm not arguing one being better over another, just that they serve different purposes for different people.

I mostly wish that the sort I want will stay the way I want and I'm mildly annoyed that the default sort is no longer the one that this site used to have.

:) Well I don't like threads floating the top. I don't need suggestions from software of what to read. :)

Anyway. Everytime I log in it revert back to sorted by last reply. Any way to make the settings stick. ??

Nope. When I asked, the thread was moved to the community center. Check there for the thread or start a new one. Anything to get them to let us pick our own default.

No, it's worse than that. It forced old topics to be new threads. If some topic required discussion for longer than a couple of days, the only way of keeping the dicsussion alive was to start a new thread for the same topic. Absurd.

There is a way. Bookmark this. And you can always switch back once you discover that the new way is best :m_tongue2:
