... if someone we know and ahem love doesn't? The one whom we know and love thinks that the rules are written for other people only and once you are banned you can come back and rise like the Phoenix from the ashes, all new and sparkling clean. An noone will know it is actually you or care that you were banned for something more serious than pouting in the general direction of Renderosity Community. The You-Know-Who might feel too powerful and actually be above the rules, like Caesar's wife. Do we all have to behave this wasy as it seems to be perfectly acceptable? I think I am going to create a couple of clone accounts now and vote for myself and my friends that I have plenty. What? I am going to be banned for that? oopsie, I will be back under some other name a couple of months later ^_^V kitty5

I must say it made me wonder too.. If you can be banned for something and go back with just another nick, why ban anyone at all? What's it worth then? Or maybe there's more to this story...??

there are levels to bans, the first is for 24h, second is 48 and the third is for a month, afaik. Then I think it's permanent. Either way, it's perfectly possible to make another account. There's been recorded cases of people who have, and we all know them very well.

What's the solution?

a) R'osity gets its act together and manages to code a decent ban properly. Even then it could be bypassed, but at least it can put in an ip ban and not a nickname ban.

b) People get their act together and shun those who have already reached the very edge of the community. It's unnaceptable to have someone who has lied and deceited you for months and months to even post here. You're either all sheep or you simply don't care.

Thanks,

Drac
PS: Or to have that person follow you around constantly, posting in your wake, regardless of topic or importance. I call that harassment, but whatever.

Nope. It simply cannot be done. I have DSL. With a dynamic address. How are you going to ban me? The last octet? Nope. Somebody else will have it as soon as I log off. And I will log off, cause you cannot stay connected 24/7 with DSL exactly because it allocates the address dynamically. The whole B class network, from the second octet down? Even worse. If everybody had a static address, it would be a different matter, but till then - zero. Your second solution would be much more effective, but since there wouldn't be a need for it if people didn't support idjits in the first place...

@drac you are correct it is harassment if a person does like you state. It is also a form of Stalking, yes you read it right, net stalking is also against the law and all measures are ment to be taken to stop this by who ever is running the forum it happens on..

Now i'm sure there if is a way to ban someone from the site other than just banning their nick. I know on the game site when we lock(ban) an account the person can't get back on the site even with using another nick..i'll have to look into this more and if it can be coded into the site then i will be happy to pass on the information to the admin of R'sity.

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

Have an idea who is being talked about. And if its who I think it is, how about R for one thing gets their act together on the Hot 20 issue. They said over a year and a half ago they were going to change it.

It has since gone into oblivion. I still think a solid H20 could improve this site a ton. Esp. seeing over the last few months when good artists post here in the forum announcing  how happy, inspired and driven to improve when they finally get in there.

What a brew-haha...

Dann-O ( ) posted Sun, 16 April 2006 at 12:49 AM

Well it shows we need to look again how the hot 20 is made. I think a combination of number of views and votes and other things. I am only sayign that because the person possibly in question already has 2 pics in the hot 20 and I guess plans on making it their own personal gallery.  I say that too because it would be nice to look at the most viewed images this week and thing like that Agent smith said he would instead look into rewriting the code for the hot 20. I think if you do that just say how many points and image has, points come from comments views and votes.

Maybe this should be finished once and for all.

There are more than the "Unnamed one", there are two who appear to be two different persons, but they (or he/she) share the same website and their styles do look awfully similair. Anayway in the time that the "unnamed one" was banned, the H20 started to resemble something that what it should be, not only a popularity vote, but a popularity vote of artists who are truely admired for the work, their efforts and skills.

But that's is all over know.

There are more than one unnamed ones, and even more than two. But the most important is not who they are but why do they exist. I actually could not care less about these people, their art and their opinions. Art is in the eye of the beholder. What I care about is why should I bother being nice and stuff towards anyone here if there is no control over it? Inside everyone is a troll, you know? Why should I bother about the "community" and not start a mudfight next time someone looks in my direction with the degree of admiration lesser than I expect? ... my fellows over the #rendergods know very well how little it takes to make a raging monster from me ^_^V walks away waving her hunting eleventacle AgentSmith, I am really sorry to start this thread  I am just genuinely puzzled... kitty5 P. Well said, Rayraz!

And from my own perspective, I'll add that I think everyone should be careful (in all aspects of life, not just Renderosity) to avoid falling into the trap of ending up in some wretched clique or cabal. Hangin' with friends is great, but it's all too easy to drop into 'group think' and see everyone outside the group as, well, outside.

One of the things I like best about Renderosity is the relatively anarchic setup. Unlike a lot of (most?) online art sites out there, all you need to do to be in the gallery here is to open an account. There's no meeting some group's standard of acceptability ('quality' or suitable software, etc). I find all the "crap" in the galleries quite refreshing in that context. It's here for everyone to enjoy. Why shouldn't they?

For crying out loud - if you don't like intensely colourful abstract Bryce work - just ignore it.

I agree - there REALLY needs to be some control over harassment and stalking.  I had to put-up with one particular JackAss for over a year (someone who incorrectly assumed they could get away with it) - but then again, I guess that just depends on how incredibly thick they really are.

The Hot-20 is just something that folk are gonna have to accept as a bit of fun, and no matter how they re-code the mechanism, that's what it always will be - a bit of fun.

The "Ignore User" feature is long overdue.  But hey, look on the bright side, at least we can switch-off our signatures for the time being (I can't tell you how much that pleases me).

Actually, believe it or not, I didn't intend to label RenderGods as a clique. Since I've never been I couldn't say so with any accuracy, and there are enough differently minded people who do go that it seems more likely to fall apart in disarray than be a hard core clique.

I was speaking in more general terms. There's enough 'group think' on this forum without bringing in anywhere else. ;-)

As to why anyone would be sad enough to barge (they're hardly sneaking!) back into somewhere they're banned from - it's probably the same reason they have a little pretend appreciation society that gets them meaningless recognition. The key word is sad.

Even sadder is getting all bent out of shape over it.

It seems like several people here think this is all about liking/disliking certain images, or liking/disliking these certain images to be in the Hot20 or not..

Imho, this is a BIG mistake. That is not the issue at all. The issue is - or WAS originally - that apparently there are no consequenses if you violate rules in the community.

I believe it is a mistake to narrow the discussion down to a personal level. It may very well be a certain person's actions that initiated it in the first place, but the discussion should be a matter of principles rather than on a personal level.

This was well said and i also believe that somewhere a long the track the message that was posted in the first post got strayed off from and taken on a direct personal attack(might be incorrect wording) on some that have made the Hot 20.

I will like to point out that even though there are some images posted in the galleries that i like and then there are some i can't stand looking at both by well known artist of this community but i wont say they don't deserve to be in the Hot 20. what i will say is i don't like the way some people use to get their images in the hot 20 whether the deserve to be in there or not.. Honesty is always the best form and will always show the true artists and those that really appreciate their art..

CD

I will always vote for images that i like no mater who did it or what it is..

PS: drac getting back on track with your original post. I have since found out that if a person continues to harrass you or continues to follow you around a forum and posts after you post something "It is stalking(Net stalking) and legal action can be taken against them. If it leads to legal action then the bodies that run the site/forum are to give you all information leading to the identity of the person doing the stalking...you can even go as far as to have that person disconnected from the net via their ISP, all ISP's have a TOS and you'll find they don't take kindly to this kind of behaviour and may even take some form of legal action against the person as well...

Drac that was past on to me by a person who i got talking to about this and he did some checking up on things for me, basically what he said i have repeated the best way i could...can't copy and paste from phones yet .

CrazyDawg ( ) posted Sun, 16 April 2006 at 2:23 PM

Just another side note for those that are/will use personal attacks on anyone no matter why you do it.

you are in breach of the TOS yourself if you do..

Quote from the TOS...Personal attacks. This includes but is not limited to, destructive, abusive, defamatory communications in any form, and retaliatory attacks from personal attacks.

so whether you think someons art should be in the hot 20 or how it got there just be careful on how or what you say..it could be deemed a personal attack on that person.

All I know is I'm sick of seeing crap like this in the BRYCE forum.  I mean if anything, this belongs in the 'Community Center' forum because of the subject matter.

I'm quite sure the admins would be only too pleased to check-out and put an end to any attacks or stalking that may be going on around here - so why not start a thread there instead?

If it looks like they actually care, then I'll be sure to join in the thread and put in some complaints myself.

what i find interesting is; how some that have a concern about an issue (this case here, the H20 and bans), are often told by others to shut up, ignore it and move on. But those telling them to move on are all bent about those talking about it. Might be time for some to take your own advice and move on. If you dont care about these issues, dont see a problem, then move on and dont open the thread anymore. Its obviously not YOUR issue.

But let those that DO have issues with it discuss it.

I find it funny how many want everyone to think like them.. "I dont find a problem with it.. so its not a problem for anyone in the whole world"... we are not all your puppets! ;-)

My disagreement in no way constitutes an attempt to stifle anyone's right to express themself. If you don't like something - argue your point. If I don't like your point, I'll argue against it.
