Subject: Is there a plan to fix the eBots?

odeathoflife ( ) posted Mon, 17 April 2006 at 1:14 PM · edited Sat, 11 January 2025 at 5:52 AM

I know that I am not the only one that doesn't like the multiple eBots in the email when they check it.  Every other forum I visit they send 1 email when teh 1st response is delivered but none after that.  Why don't hte programmers have a look at some free php boards to see how this is done and implement it?

Is this in the works to be fixed?

There's no plan to fix the ebots, AFAIK. The programmers have started working on the galleries.

But I do hope that they'll consider the ebot issue.

I know how I would address the issue: for every database update that COULD trigger an ebot to be sent out, I'd put a message in a message queue with the relevant information (forum ID, thread ID, post ID, gallery ID, whatever). Asynchronously.
And a second, low-priority process would handle the messages in the queue, figuring out what ebots to send to what users. I don't think anyone would mind a few seconds or even minutes delay in receiving e-bots, as long as the main forum/gallery site works smoothly and as long as the correct ebots get sent out.
By using message queueing it's easy to offload the ebot handling to a separate server..It's also easy to set up multiple application servers that all send their messages to the same message queue.
Message queueing is a proven technology for over 20 years. PHP can do it - handling credit card payments is also done by message queueing. But it does require thorough software design and doesn't lend itself to "quick & dirty". I guess the programmers know about message queueing, but just didn't have the time to design and implement it.

The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter

According to Williamsn (admin) there will be no alteration to the ebots. He seems to be of the opinion that as the ebots are now 'six times faster', then the fact that we get deluged with dozens of them is not important.

Yeah, I'm sure they are much faster, seeing as how most people probably aren't subscribing to them anymore so as to keep their inboxes from screaming...

I think there's a communication problem.

Most members are aware that there are teething problems with the new forum set up. The admin have asked them to be patient and assured them that things will be fixed and features added as time goes on. So most people are just sitting it out and hoping things get sorted soon. They're still waiting for the ebot fix and they aren't complaining.

The admin aren't seeing many complaints about the ebot deluge, and since things are just dandy for them, they are finished with that part of development. I think when the news filters out that ebots are regarded as finished, there'll be more complaints.

I've resorted to turning the bloody things off. Maybe most have - maybe that's why they're running six time faster. ;-)

I have always had the ebots turned off since day one..I come here EVERYDAY...so I dont need to be informed that there has been a reply anywhere....not saying that some prefer to be notified..Im sure the merchants would use that feature more than I would..but I see {for myself} no need for them.

The members are probably taking matters into their own hands about the E-bots. I did see that ernyoka1 was enlisting V3's help in slaying the E-bots, they probably formed a militia of other figures to go and wipe them out.

I reply to threads to follow whats going on, a lot of threads, I would like to be informed of the replies, but not to every reply.  The unsubscribe while viable dosn't suit me for this as I read and reply to a lot of thread, but of course foget which ones.

Hey! Did you see that? I aswered here and it popped to the top of the list!! This feature is back? AND oddly my chosen text size is staying when I went to new paragraph?!? These are good things!!

I just posted this in another thread, so finally have a good thing to post about... BUT there have been several threads and/or replies in threads about the e-bot notice problems with the rather rude reply about not going to ever fix them...that was a bit hard to take.

I am very careful now about subscribing or staying subscribed... and I did NOT use my latest coupon in protest. Yes it hurts the merchants and yes they don't like a lot either, but how else can we say that WE  are the customers??

Life Requires Assembly and we all know how THAT goes!

I noticed the top of the list thing, which, IMO, makes the ebot unnecessary. So, I feed 'em to McAfee Spam Killer, which really seems to enjoy them and everything else that even remotely looks like it might be from anything called Renderosity, Ebot, Marketplace, etc.... Besides, it's not like the ebots are any good anyway, seeing as how all you get is a "click here" and no useful URL to copy/paste, and in any event it just goes to the forum and not the post. Hey, I don't want to hear what y'all have to say anyway. ;)
