Subject: Speed Modeling Challenges, Monthly Challenges, or both?

Teyon ( ) posted Sat, 15 April 2006 at 5:04 PM · edited Sun, 12 January 2025 at 12:02 PM

Hiya gang. So, Looks like the last bit I needed changed (the ability to UNSTICK a sticy thread, has been fixed too. So now, we can have forum challenges without worry. So, I need you all to tell me a few things:

  1. Do we want speed modeling challenges and if so, the amount of hours allowed (3hours or 4hours)? (NOTE: Speed modeling challenges aren't judged, the challenge is a personal one)

  2. Do we want monthly challenges or bi-monthly challenges? (NOTE: Monthly challenges would have winners voted by forum members, with final say/tie-braking powers reserved to moderators)

  3. Do we want both types of challenges?

Feel free to let me know what you want. Understand, going into it, that challenges are not contests, and therefore, no prizes beyond admiration, the ability to decide the next challenge (and maybe a homemade image trophy) will be offered.

Most sites have it set at 3 hours but the last time I tried that here, I don't think anyone bothered to enter. So, maybe giving an extra hour will inspire entrants...

So, that's one vote. Who's next?

I'm new to modelling and haven't actually modeled anything yet, but I think a monthly challenge would be great to get newbies like myself started.  Then later on down the line speed challenges would be nice.  So I guess both.

both
4 hrs

I like both I perfer the monthly challenge. Keep it simple so that you can finish the monthly challenge like a spee dmodeling challenge. I don't want to see things like monthly challenge model a photo real cathedral compleate with congregation. I would like both but I think it would be cool to have them be one and the same.  Make a quickie chair etc.  Both would be nice. I do like judged challenges it gives everyone soemthing to shoot for.

As I probably will never feel worthy of entering perhaps I should keep my mouth shut but here goes:

both

24 or 48 hour notice with a 4 hour actual working time for the speed contest. That would give those that wanna join in time to know about it and log an entry and should allow for differences in people's schedules.

My thoughts are that it would be nice if there wasn't such a short time limit on it.  Some of us are just starting out in modeling and can not even come close to making the time limit.  I think you would have more entries if it was more reasonable and would encourage people who aren't seasoned to join in and then some of us work so time IS an issue.  So maybe something like a weekly or bi weekly challenge?  That way more artists would be enclined to take part.  I know I would.  But this is just food for thought.

If you can't play nice then get out of my sandbox. :)

4hrs is not that short I would actually think that is too long.

but 4 will give us time to add some detail :)

How about 2 levels for the speed model.  Rookie and Seasoned?

I would go in for that speed one but could not devote the time needed for a monthly challenge

odeathoflife,

Could go that way but the competion with such as yourself is what will make a rookie try harder. I learned Bryce by competting with such as Rochr, AgentSmith and other seasoned Bryce users. I'll never be in their class but I know a lot more than if I'd have been treated with kid gloves. If you think 4 hours is too long so be it!  It should be fun for all and the more experienced modelers should have more say as it is important to keep the more experienced modelers involved as long as it isn't so far above the heads of the rookies that they quit trying.

I've decided to start the speed modeling threads.  The link provided takes you to the current one.  The monthly challenges won't start until next month. Conisder this a warm up. I'll try and have another speed challenge up soon.

I would go with both, I often do lunch time renders as well - try and get something out in an hour (excluding the final rendere time) - can be really hard! I'm going to have a blast at the 4 hour challenge as (hopefully) the wife and kids are out for the rest of the day :)
