Subject: Running Poser from an external hard drive

Anyone know if it is possible to run Poser from an external hard drive?

I get the free time to run my renders when I'm at university, but don't want to have to keep lugging my laptop in to do it on. The network is some quite well specced PCs, so if this can be done then it will save my shoulder...

TIA for and advice on this one - Martin

Yes you can.

Before I got my current desktop, I was using a laptop with a 40GB HD, and had Poser 5 (and all it's content) installed on a 60GB external drive.

I would suggest trying to get a drive with a USB 2.0 connection, otherwise it's going to be slow switching between libraries and runtimes (if you use multiple runtimes).

Ditto.  😄  I run P6 from an external and have never had a problem.

Its the "My Options" link at the head of this page. Took me a while to find it, I was looking in the members prefs on the old pages.

I have installed Poser 6 on an internal drive and use a Poser 5 runtime (>100 GB) on an external drive with no problems

Same here; my little old Mac G4 only has a 25 GB hard drive, so I've got Posers 4, 5, and 6 on a La Cie Firewire 120 GB drive (or at least the runtimes for 4 and 5). No problemo whatsoever.

there was once a rumour that it was actually safer to run P5/6 on an external drive (OS X) to prevent systems file corruption on the main drive, but the experts tended to doubt that this was the case.
