It's amazing how quickly I get rusty.  I haven't modelled in wings for well over a month, proably two and had to think hard how to do what I wanted it to do.

Anyway, here's a new model I started working on this morning.  (I set out to make a cycle.  Go figure!)

Nice design, love the rotary guns on the front!

It loos sort of phallic(Hey someone would have said it ) - but very good modeling. and well presented. the sky is fantastic. can't tell if the texture comes as reflection from the sky or it is very well uv'd. excellent job!!

Kitty5 already said that, but I put that down to her being a girl.   What's your excuse?  ;-)

The sky is one of Alvin's free skies.  They are incredible and I use them WAY too much.

Very cool design Phil! 👍

When you said fighter plane I was expecting, well a fighter plane. At any rate I love it, but I'd like to add my two (geeky) cents worth.

  1. Since its not aero/hydro-dynamic, it implies space capable. The stabilizing fins imply atmosphere capable as well. Therefore I'd make the fins retractable looking so that the pilot only uses them in atmosphere.

  2. The gatling guns are nice, but they imply projectile ammunition (if I'm not mistaken). Great for atmosphere, but in space??? I remember reading a Sci Fi short story where a cargo ship flew by the site of a space battle that took place over 300 years earlier where they use projectile weapons. The bullets had travelled over hundreds of thousands of kilometers and they were showered by ammunition travelling at 5000 m/s. In other words maybe add some good ole fashion energy weapons too.

Ok, it was more than two cents. Sorry.

Bandolin,
If you wish to speak geek, here we go....

  1. A gatling gun design only implies rapid fire, not necessarily projectiles. Who know what the future brings for rapid fire energy beams. Perhaps each tube is a chargeable laser itself and needs a slight recharge time, (milliseconds perhaps). Or it could be just a grouping of energy weapons firing a set pattern (spread) of beams.

  2. Large wings are not necessary for flight if you have enough thrust behind it. Please refer to the NASA X-series of planes from the 1950's.

  3. Use your magination when it comes to things sticking out of space ship models. Not everyone works for Industrial Light & Magic.

:b_smile:

drawbridgep ( ) posted Thu, 27 April 2006 at 8:11 PM
  1. Why retract wings for space flight when there's no drag?  Might as well leave them there.  The space shuttle (for example), doesn't need wings till it reenters, but I don't think they fold them away until needed.

Also, Kimpe is wise.

And

B) I always model things cause I want them to look cool, not real.

And thirdly, it fires tiny cobalt 465 pelets close to the speed of light and they rip through most shielding without too much trouble.

And IV, I'm glad you like it.  :-)

To protect them during space combat.

Touché

Never said anything about the size of the wings.

I wasn't trying to get you to change your philosophy, I was just kicking around some ideas. That's why I thought you posted this in the forum. I apologize if I seemed overly critical.

Not sure what you mean by this but it sounds vaguely insulting. My imagination is quite fine in my opinion.

And thirdly, it fires tiny cobalt 465 pelets close to the speed of light (drawbridgep)

Ahh, so it is a projectile weapon. I feel somewhat vindicated. Gotta name for it yet?

I'm starting to think the wings have the same purpose as on a 50's cadillac.

Ideas are always welcome.   My most succesful model came about from ideas thrown around.   But mostly, I post out of pure selfesh, look what I've done, aren't I clever, reasons.  ;-)

I wonder if we can assume all guns are projectile weapons.   Even a laser gun has to project the light.   mmmm.......

Not being insulting at all bandolin. Sorry if I came across that way. Working with Max while making aircraft models for Flight Simulator 2002, I always came across people we refered to as "Rivet Counters". One rivet off and they threw a fit.. Call it a "knee jerk" reaction.

bandolin,

Yes recharge time on an energy weapon  might warrent a gattling gun. brilliant!
