Subject: OT: A Fix For Win32.Polip virus, It Worked for me

beos53 ( ) posted Thu, 04 May 2006 at 4:03 PM · edited Mon, 10 February 2025 at 4:33 PM

I got the Win32.Polip virus and have worked for a week trying to get rid of it
I ran BitDefender on all my files and it said it fixed the files (it changed the Icon to a dos Icon), only Norton and AVG still found the virus in the files that BitDefender said it fixed.
I ran Dr. Web and it said all the files were clean, but the exe were dead! And I didn't want to delete them.
I got a bright idea (very seldom do I get those) and changed the extension from exe to zip on several of these files.
I ran Dr. Web again and it found the virus and cured it
I changed the extension back to exe and the icon changed back to original.
I ran Norton and Avg on these files and NO VIRUS WAS DETECTED.
I installed the programs with no hitch. Check my system for Virus's and everything was Clear.
This Worked for me I hope it works for you, so you don't have to get the files again.

How did you find out you even had it and do you know where it came from?  Sharen

Thanks!!! I will try that!!! I have three PCs down from this horrible virus and am running scans. My exes are dead, too. My main computer has a terrabyte of hard drives so it is taking forever.

Excellent idea!  I'll remember this the next time I get

virused.  (Fortunately, Zone Alarm has SO FAR kept

me clean since it was installed, but it's just a matter of time .....)

Sharen:
Norton kept popping up with an alert on the virus.
After reading up on it, it is supposed to come from the p2p networks, but I don't have any p2p software on my computer, so I don't have any idea how I got it.

Hey Beos, you have both Norton and Avg installed? They don't cause any conflict with each other?
The reason I ask is I am thinking of installing AVG and wondered if I should uninstall Norton first.

It started in p2p the same way AIDS started in African monkeys... But today, you're not going to get AIDS from a monkey... and you can apply the same analogy to this virus. When I ran DrWeb, I had a whole stack of trojans (and not the latex kind) norton and spybot had failed to detect and zone alarm had not kept out. So I have ideas on how the virus got on my machine...

Truth has no value without backing by unfounded belief.

Mystic-Nights
Yes I have both running when I am on the internet and only Norton when I am offline.
I do check everything I download with both.
I haven't had any conflicts in the last 7 months. I did install Norton first then AVG.

Just a note for what I did on clearing the Win32.polip I changed the extension with Norton running then diabled it when I ran Dr. Web. Dr Web said the files were ok until I disabled Norton, then Dtr. Web found the virus in the new extension and cured it. I changed the extension back and then enabled Norton again

My e-Trust antivirus not only finds it, but also cures it:

Quote - Win32/Polip is a polymorphic, entry point obfuscating (EPO) virus that infects Windows executable files. It may also spread via the Gnutella file sharing network.

Polip searches for and infects files in the Program Files directory. It also stays resident and infects certain files when they are run. It only infects Windows console and GUI applications for the IA32 platform that have the extension .exe or .scr.

Note: CA Antivirus solutions using the Vet engine (version 12.4.2184 and later) provide cleaning for the vast majority of Win32/Polip.A infections. However, the complex nature of the infection mechansim used by this virus requires a somewhat lengthy disinfection procedure. Hence, please note that it may take some time to clean a Polip infection if a large number of files are affected.

Ockham, I use zone alarm fully updated and I got the polip.a virus, so you should check any suspect files that you download just in case.  Zone alarm can detect polip.a, I still dont understand how it didnt stop it infecting my computer.
