Subject: Creating props in Poser - is it the best route????

barrowlass ( ) posted Sun, 28 May 2006 at 11:48 AM · edited Sun, 24 November 2024 at 3:08 AM

I want to create some jewellery for V3 and was wondering whether you can do this with Poser 6, or is a third party program better?  I have Z Brush but am still getting to grips with it - modelling isn't my forte I'm afraid (I'd be no danger to Kate Moss, lol 😉  ).  Any advice would be appreciated, especially any pointers to good tuts

For something like jewelry which has lots of precise little pieces, zBrush might not be the best choice IMO. You can do this with Poser alone as well (to some extent) but a traditional modeller like WIngs or even Hexagon would give you better and more efficient results

-my .2 c anyway :)

**thanks for the quick reply - I was just wondering.  I know Wings is a free proggie, so I'll give it a go.  I want to go one step beyond just texturing Poser figures and this is my next possible venture - today textures, tomorrow - bagels, lol. **

You could also make jewellery with the Poser primitives, by way of scaling, parenting, grouping, and exporting all as one object.

Hi DPH, I'd been thinking along those lines myself - then I wouldn't have to go thru a lot of mucking about via other programs, but it's all a learning curve isn't it?  I won't start this week as we're off visiting family in Europe 😄

poser isn't really a modelling program at all, though it has some miniscule ability to fiddle around with combining primitives.  trust me, you don't want to do that; it's clumsy beyond belief.

zbrush is ... different.  it lives in its own dimension.  absolutely fabulous for creating detail from what i've seen.  i don't know how fabulous it is at basic modelling -- most people who use zbrush appear to me to be developing their base mesh in another application.  but maybe they do that because they're more familiar with their other 3D program, and zbrush uses a very different approach.  it does appear to me to have plenty of modelling tools.

anyway, a quick look at the links below shows oodles of tutorials, including several for absolute newbies, and one for a dagger that makes me want to run out and buy zbrush right away!  looking at that dagger tute makes it seem quite easy to create jewelry in zbrush.

modelling consists mostly of matching of your mindset to your toolset, or the other way around if you can't easily shift to doing things in different ways (which is something that can be learned, with lots of practice).  if one modeller doesn't work for you (even though you started with the beginner tutorials, which is something a lot of people skip to their detriment -- learn to operate the controls before you start driving that automobile :), then you're best off looking for one that does things similar to the way you think about creating an object.

Of try Wings 3d, it's free. Only trick with it (and many other programs) is getting the scale right. I've just started doing it myself (modeling for Poser), but it's fun..it's certainly cheaper..;)

hey doc g, if you want to challenge yourself, or embark on a proof of concept project, more power to ya.  that sort of thing can be fun.  but i stand by my statement that poser's modelling is still clumsy beyond belief, and not a viable choice for people who're not up for a challenge, considering that there are real modellers out there for free.  and she already has zbrush!  i am of the belief that one generally ought to use the best tool for the job, within one's financial limits.  i am forever sharpening people's knives in their kitchens too.  :)

good luck with your house!

As far as import/export scale in Wings, I've found the following to be quite workable:
(These settings are accessed by clicking on the little box to the right of "Wavefront (.obj)..." on the import and export menus. You only need to set it once.)

(1) leave the box next to "Swap Y and Z Axes" unchecked.

(2) Import scale 20.00

(3) (Export scale) 0.05

Go get 'em Doc, you can prove that statement wrong.

**thanx all - plenty for me to think about here!  As I say, it's not an imperative as yet - got lots of un-poser things to think of (holidays!) so will have a play after we get back next week. **
