I do hope they open up the format so other platforms may use them as well. Imagine what would happen if you're using it on your website and then a linux or mac user comes along and can't view it because MS doesn't expose the format.

I would think that if it was not open, it would be a potential minefield for anyone to use it. If they want a cross platform format.
Hopefully MS won’t be allowed to keep it just for MS users/systems but stranger things have happened.
Still it is far to early to speculate or even have an opinion, but I guess there is room for improvement to the current Jpeg standards. Time will tell.
Jpeg (love it or hate it) is a very well established format, so I would think it would take a long tome to replace it completely (if that is even possible) assuming that older browsers/software wont be able to display the MS format
They wouldn’t have made the cane if you weren’t meant to break the rules

Microsoft is promoting a new media format (.WDP) that will be an integral part of its upcoming VISTA OS. It is supposed to have a better quality at higher compression (clearer, smaller) than JPEG images. It has a host of other benefits as well, from retaining metadata, various colorspaces and even transparency. Is Windows trying to make JPEGs obsolete? Is that a good thing? Bad? It is a slow day here in the Forum so I thought I'd start this thread. Hey, anyone know why the Renderosity Galleries are so slow today?Kort Kramer - Kramer Kreations
