Subject: Help on taking images of performance in a bar like setting

DreamersWish ( ) posted Fri, 02 June 2006 at 11:11 PM · edited Sat, 26 October 2024 at 6:04 AM

I have the Kodak P850 camera.  I am going to a bellydance show on 6/3 late at night and it is in a bar like setting.  We are not allowed to use flash.  I do not know how to use manual settings and was wondering if any one with experience in lighting such as this knows of good settings to use.  If anyone can please help, I would greatly appreciate it.  It is probably my only chance to go to a show like this.  Thank you very much in advance.

High ISO...set the aperature to allow a lot of light in if possible, and shutter speed less than 60..then find some good light where the dancers are.
Make sure you hold the camera on a table if you cannot use a tripod.
Take multiple shots  of everything on some different settings so you can be sure to get some.
I don't know that camera, but if it has a fireworks setting maybe try that.Preset modes for indoors usually require a flash. I think a fireworks setting doesnt.
Practice with your manual settings previous to this show.

I haven't shot an event like this but will "amen" to Dougs recommendation on cam support and practice a bit of manual first!   I don't necessarily mean total manual unless you are adept at that .  You can perhaps practice some in similar lighting and see how aperture affects shutter speed  as you change the ISO(film speed) and the other way around.

Regardless of images too light or too dark, if totally fuzzy from movement they will not be worth much.  I would opt for keeping some controllable shutter speed and let the aperture go as it does..shutter priority.  my 1 cent worth.  Sorry if confusing.  I am often confused...lol 😕

Let us know how it goes.   TomDart

Thank you gentlemen for your help.  Although my camera did not have some of the settings you suggested, some of the suggestions I tried.  This actually is the best one that came out.  Let me know what you think.  Again thank you so much.  Have a good week!

I went to see the Gallery shot and things are too slow this morning. I will take a look this evening after work and let you know what I think.  I need to get back to your gallery too..some interesting forms I couldn't check out today.
