Subject: Hair Models and Rocket Science

BillyGoat ( ) posted Tue, 10 April 2001 at 10:36 AM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 2:24 PM

How is it that Kozaburo can create these unbelievable hair models and then give them away for free? Besides the beauty of them, they are practicaly guaranteed to produce satisfaction. Yet, the new commercial hair products require instructions and tweaking beyond the 'average users' knowledge? I wanted so badly to buy the new 'changing ponytail' at Daz, but was disheartened by the readme... "To Parent: With the default Vicki, you will need to make the following adjustments to accurately parent the hair to the figure. These are not guaranteed to parent the hair perfectly to all default positions of Vicki, you may have her saved out with slight differences that will make further parenting necessary." Why would I make this purchase knowing that I may have to tweak it at every turn? It's a fine piece of work, and i'd love to own it, but if I have spend more time on setting up the hair than the entire scene, it's not practical. I know that people who express their opinions about commercial products getty pretty beat up here, but how enjoyable is a model if 'the average user' cannot attain a satisfying result? Is it all about $ales or satisfied customers? We're talking Poser here... It shouldn't take a Masters Degree. Beat me up if you want - I'm just a paying customer with dollars to spend. Dollars i'd rather spend on the Artists here that do design ease and beauty into their commercial products.

WEll, as I understand it, Anton's hair isn't just one hair style, but quite a few and he's come up with a rather new way of using it, so perhaps this interferes with the normal just import it. You might write and ask him. I've always found him very helpful and approachable. Just be nice to him Smile--he's one of the 'good guys'. Diane

MallenLane ( ) posted Tue, 10 April 2001 at 11:13 AM

He's using alternate geometry switching to change out aspects of the hair for new elements, thus changing the style. There is no way to "smart parent" a figure to another figure I believe.

nfredman ( ) posted Tue, 10 April 2001 at 12:41 PM

Actually, one has to tweak Kozaburo's styles when using them on Vicki, too. Or on a character based on one of the basic figures (P4 folks, Vicki, Mike...). i think Anton's readme gave specific instructions. DAZ took it off their store's page for this product, no doubt due to the kvetching going on here. Really, this is no harder to do than getting clothing to fit well, and clothing doesn't automatically pop onto the figure, either! i'm sure that when i buy this in a few days, i will share the exact dial tweaks i use, or export a morph target for it. Besides, being able to attach the pony tails & bangs to other hair-dos seems really cool to me! The only thing i've got like that now is the Helene hair prop. Now, if i could persuade dear Anton to make us a nice French braid (the kind that starts at the top back of your head and braids downward through your scalp hair) and maybe a crown of braids. :^) And aside from Ye Olde Bending Curly Hair, there aren't too many (Total Hair, perhaps?) styles that give you realistic loose corkscrew curls. (sigh)

Well, I bought it, I've played with it, and I like it. In fact, I'm using it in my current project (which, I hope, I will be allowed to post for public viewing somewhere, I'm still waiting for the go ahead on that bit) Kate the Rocket Scientist

My Commercial product, the Smart hair model is already set up with HR2 files not only for both Victoria and Possette but with HR2 files for the both of them for all four of the colour variations, so no "tweaking" is needed. So all in all you get eight HR2 files, that will just pop into place when they are selected from the hair library. I have many very happy customers whom I am sure will attest to this :) I don't have Anton's hair, but I am sure that the reason for the statement on Daz's web page is due to the fact that this is using geometry swapping, an advanced technique that imports different hair models (thus calling up different geometry) when you turnthe dial, now I don't know much about the ins and outs of it but I imagine that if after setting the hair up and parenting it to Vicky that you decide that you need a different style and turn that dial (hey I can rhyme!)that the new geometry will appear in the default positon. I think that Anton was showing great integrity by putting the note on the web page about it, and that as an aside I think that it is great value, to be getting all those styles for that price, and as soon as I can affored it I'll be buying it myself - it never hurts to learn from a master :) Alla

I prolly shouldn't even be posting to this thread, since I never buy any hair products, but I have to say that Kozaburo is a MASTER at making hair, and unless I paint the hair on the model myself (an art I am trying to master), I will always use his hair...IMHO it's the best out there..and it's free!!

Tammy ( ) posted Tue, 10 April 2001 at 10:34 PM

I bought Allas Hair I think its terrific, not only is thier so much in the package but you also get all those cool freebies for it. And it pops right on the head, I have never had to adjust or tweak it to get it to fit her head. And if you check out my gallery lately you'll see plent examples of how it looks because I have used it almost constantly since I bought it :)

Ladyfyre-graphics ( ) posted Tue, 10 April 2001 at 10:54 PM

Thankyou Tammy:) It's comments like that that make it worth it:) Also, I know that I wouldn't release a product unless it was spot on for me and my beta testers, I have two other hair models sitting on my hard drive, one I made before the Smart hair model and never released it as it has a slight kink in the texturing, due to me slicing in some added polygons, and my newest model, Sassy hair, which you can see in my gallery, of which I'm very proud but I need to figure either convert it to a conformable character or make morph targets for it, as it is a longer style and I'm not happy with the way that it cuts into the models shoulders in certain poses. So I won't be releasing it until it is A1 ready. I also love Koz's georgeous hair, it is beautiful and versatile, and it is very, very generous of him to give it away for free, but I hardly ever use it anymore as almost every other image in the gallery sems to be utilising it, and I like to have something different in mine.

nfredman - I belive that it is Vairesh who has been working on some curly hair, he has been posting imagesof it in this forum as it goes along, and I must say that it look stunning, with long thick corkscrew type curls. Alla

Alla, i think i'm going to get your hair set, too! i'm so glad the store is using 3 separate views for products now. Gives more scope for demonstration; certainly allowed me to check out the variations.

Lorraine ( ) posted Wed, 11 April 2001 at 9:05 AM

I have the switching hair and it works very well. I think the readme is being exaggerated. the amount of work needed to get the hair positioned is not that much really! The switching parts work great and it is sooo much easier to see the different styles by using the dials. i suspect that Anton's hair switching model will become more of the standard....

RealitysPoison ( ) posted Wed, 11 April 2001 at 9:12 AM

I am not sure what all the fuss is for Antons hair. I love it. Didn't even take the time to view the readme, just popped it in and I had it on Ozarias head in just a minute or two. I am very please with it. I think he made a great product. Of course, I like your hair too, Alla. Just bought it the other day and am using it for a project now. ;0 If you expect everything in poser to be easy, without any work, then maybe Antons hair isn't for you. But personally, when I am making an image, I spend a lot of time tweaking everything, so the extra minute it takes to place Antons hair is nothing compared to the quality it gives.
