They look good.  Darn slow to load the images though.

The forums are slow too so I think it's just due to server load at present. cross fingers

Just took a gander at my own gallery in the new format. Looks good, but I didn't expect the ability to remove comments. Funny, one of the recent threads in this forum regarding comments contains a statement by one of the moderators that the galleries didn't have the option to remove unwelcome comments by design...

Will the option to remove comments from a gallery image stay? I don't need this option, the only comment I do not welcome is a trolling remark, and those comments are either removed by the mods/coords (which is fine by me) or they stay to demonstrate the childishness of the troll in question (which is also fine by me).

As soon as my next render is finished I'm going to try the upload. One of the things I like already is the possibility to credit more than 10 merchants, very useful to me since I almost always use dozens of different products in my renders. I hope I can use the new credit method to insert credits for freebie providers, something I really missed in the old galleries.

The galleries are quite slow indeed. It might be that a lot of users are trying them out at this very moment, or it might be another demonstration of the fact that recoding an existing web application in PHP is not a magic guarantee of speed.

Kudos to the programmers and staff for bringing up the new galleries so quickly. I expected a full 12 hour downtime as announced, it's been much less. Well done!

I kind of like the idea of being able to delete comments like you describe.  I took the opportunity to delete 2 remarks that I considered trolling because they stemmed from a board discussion and the people took it off board to my gallery, something I didn't appreciate at all.  Said comments would not have been made otherwise, or if they had been, would not have been phrased in the manner that they were, which was to make a political statement and not just a comment on the art itself.

Well,

I dont know about other people, but I am quite unhappy with the gallery changes.  I find it to be very confusing to navigate this site.  I  dont like the smaller Image size with the zoom option because people wont use it.  The quality of images of others that I have gone back and looked at is pretty degraded unless you Zoom in.  As a graphic designer I am saddened by these changes.  The Galleries used to create a nice community feeling, but now it doesnt ...with the viewers comments off to the side and the poster's comments off to the side too.  I think Renderosity is going to lose alot of people with this change.  I dont know why you decided to change it so radically, and make it much less user friendly but you might want to re-consider some of the changes.  I have never really liked the voting system all that much, but now " The Most Rated " category, which I assume takes the place of the Hot 20 is going to leave alot of great artists who are less viewed in the dust.  Personally this place I used to call " Home away from Home " is a visual nightmare for me and it doesnt feel like home anymore.  It is designed in such a way as to be alienating. Oddly I have no desire to view peoples images with this gallery format.  The page is too cluttered and the image to small for my visual comfort.  I am sorry to say this.  I am trying to figure out why these changes were chosen as they certainly are not in the best interest of the artists.  Hopefully you will reconsider some of the changes and find a way to make this site a community the way it was before.   I am saddened and very disappointed.  Best of luck

I have to say I'm also disappointed with the shrunken default image.  If anything it should be an option that people can turn on if they don't like/want to have a huge image load up, but I for one would much rather see the image as it was envisioned by the artist to start with as opposed to needing to click on the image to enlarge it each and every time. Talk about a PITA.

Congratulations to the programmers, the new layout is very impressive! I don't like the zoom feature though, it's just one more thing to click on and one more chance for the server to lag.
Are we no longer going to have number of comments/ratings/hits displayed under our thumbs? I always thought it was interesting, skimming the main gallery and seeing how different pics did in those areas.

cherokee69 ( ) posted Tue, 13 June 2006 at 6:38 PM

New gallery, what a laughing stock that is. Hate the white background but that can be fixed with the CSS style sheet changees. Now, as if enough people weren't looking at the  "Today's Most Viewed", "Today's Most Commented", and "Today's Top Rated" images in the old gallery, now we are forced to look at them when we go to the gallery. I myslef would rather not have to look at those. Is anyone at Rosity playing with a full deck of cards? It sure doesn't seem like it.

tainted_heart ( ) posted Tue, 13 June 2006 at 6:53 PM · edited Tue, 13 June 2006 at 7:00 PM

Kudos to those that made the gallery changes! I'm sure you all worked hard and I, for one, am very pleased with the results. There are a few things I would like to comment on:

Deleting comments - I think this is a bad idea. Admins/Mods should be the only ones with the ability to delete comments. The old system of making a request to the Mods concerning a disagreable comment was fair and prevented people from valid, constructive comment from being removed at the whim of a member.

My Gallery/Most Recent Upload - The text accompanying the image is not being formatted as it was formatted when the image was uploaded. It's being displayed as string of text. It would be nice if it displayed in the format it was created with. For example, the verses of a poem, instead of displaying on separate lines are displayed as one continous line of text.

My Gallery - the My Gallery link takes us to a summary page that shows the Most Recent Upload, Recent Uploads, Favorite Images, and recent views. One has to cut and past the link from the bottom of the page to get to our full gallery. Clicking on My Gallery should take us to our full gallery, and clicking on Summary should take us to the summary page.

Views and Comments - are not visible under the thumbnails. One has to look at the individual image to see the number of views and comments. Many of us check our gallery page to see which images are getting the most hits to help us judge what techiniques and subjects are successful. It makes it more difficult to rate our images at a glance if we have to view each individual image to get that information.

Permissions, Options and Advisories - Great Idea! Being able to set the kind of comment/critiques wanted or disable comments/ratings all together is a fantastic addition!

Ratings - droping it down to 5 is a good idea. Not many paid attention to the old rating system anyway.

Zoom - another nice addition but there is a drawback, some images get the "jaggies" from being compressed in the default image. It's noticible in the default image and is eliminated in the zoom. The problem is some people may give a lower rating to the image for poor antialiasing or leav e a comment criticising the lack of antialiazing, if they don't look at the zoomed view.

I'd appreciate knowing if some of the concerns I pointed out will be considered and/or addressed. All in all I am surprised and pleased that the conversion went so well. The new galleries are super, and I find the white background doesn't really detract from viewing the images at all. I do appreciate that we were given the option to change it though. Things are still running a bit sluggish, hopefully that will change within the next few hours. All in all:

I give you guys two thumbs up - Job Well Done!! :thumbupboth:

It's all fun and games...

Personally I really liked the old version a lot better. I think this new thing with the small pictures, that also set the quality of the image down is very frustrating. I know that I can click the zoom botton, but I don't understand why it was done this way. I look around in peoples "homepages", and I can't find their favorite-images  or favorite-artist anymore,- but I can find their favorite-marchants/vendors with links to click on. Something wrong only here, or is it only the Rendero-way,- just the links to where it is money to earn?

jwiest ( ) posted Tue, 13 June 2006 at 7:11 PM

Is anybody else getting their e-bots for favorites?  I can tell that so far I most certainly am NOT unless they're stuck in a mail server waiting to go out for some reason.  That would be more distressing than the shrunken image by a mile.

logansfury ( ) posted Tue, 13 June 2006 at 7:23 PM

Bleaugh.

Didnt the old forums and galleries used to be formatted at 800x600? I seem to remember that I only had a horizontal scroll thumb at the galleries and forums when someone specifically uploaded an over 800pixel wide image, and then it only affected that one gallery page or that one forum thread.

Now the default page size has been increased and the images in both the forums and galleries. by default are now REDUCED?

Why at an art site would background color, space for banner adds, text, smileys, etc be expanded, and the presentation of the ART of the site participants be shrunk and have its quality comprimised?

I know by now people must be thinking that im just waiting for every change as an opportunity to slam the coders, but as God is my witness, this is simply calling what quacks and has feathers a duck. Reducing our image sizes and quality - and subseqently the impact of thier first impressions is NOT an improvement of an art site's gallery or forums.

I knew there was a good reason I saved my entire gallery in the old format to my HD the day before the change....

raven ( ) posted Tue, 13 June 2006 at 7:36 PM

There is an annoyance with this new gallery for me. If I choose a month from the archives, it shows the pictures newest to oldest for that month. As you have to select a date range why can't the gallery show it in the date range order? Or am I doing something wrong?

IgnisSerpentus ( ) posted Tue, 13 June 2006 at 7:38 PM

Well, I think its a little early to be posting an opinion yet and I personally loathe change generally speaking. But here is my first impression.

I think its going to be confusing -- anything is til you get used to it. The actual look of the gallery doesnt personally bother me, coz I know Ill get used to it eventually. But there are a few things that do bother me...

# 1 - Using css to implement changes in how someone views the style of the site. I think thats bunk coz not everyone can code css. So if they cant, theyre stuck with the icky off white look with black text (which kills my eyes personally... glare sucks) I think you guys would have been better off adding some kind of style panel where people can change the colors by using a slider or by just adding the color codes in, like it is in our profiles. CSS is total hell to someone who doesnt know what theyre doing. Lucky for me I know code.... not so lucky for everyone else.

#2 - Viewing galleries by "Most commented" and "Most viewed" CLIQUEY!!! None of the newer posters are going to be viewed that way... everyone is automatically going to look at the elite of the site. I really wish Rendo would rise above status for a change and give everyone a fair shake. Little guys become big guys eventually, but with that in place, no one is going to get anywhere.... except those who are more known and have been here longer.

As far as it being slow, yeah Im inclined to think its server overload at present. PHP is awfully fast, and the way its loading now isnt fast at all. But ehhh glitches are to be expected when something like this is done. I think most of the changes are positive, or could be in time.

I think thats all for now LOL

IgnisSerpentus ( ) posted Tue, 13 June 2006 at 7:50 PM

PS: Other things I didnt mention....

*** Im not getting ebots either... its prolly just a glitch that will be fixed**

*** Im glad to be able to delete comments ~ too many people leave nasty ones and its nice not to have to bother a mod, everytime u need one removed.**

*** I think I liked being able to see the viewings and comments under the thumb too... but at least this way, people arent viewing stuff just coz it has more hits and comments. They cant see that til after they click the image.**

*** You shouldnt be viewing this while at work**

Just to answer a couple of queries.

The site speed last night was apparently due to server problems and not related to the conversion. I'm on now since 6am GMT and it's running okay, so fingers crossed that's fixed.

There is a Community Centre forum thread with one alternate stylesheet so far for gallery use, hopefully more will be posted as more users experiment with the settings.

Ebots - this is a holdover problem and has been an issue for the last week or so. Now the conversion is done, hopefully the programmers will be able to address it swiftly.

Nudity all over front page - yeah, we noticed  For the moment we've removed the "Most viewed today" and "Best rated today" from the front page of the gallery and just left the "Most recent images". The admin team will be discussing options going forward.

Sort by "Most viewed" and "Most commented" - those options were there on the old gallery and have simply been ported over.

Images being shrunk on the main display page - I agree, I don't like this either  We've all (staff) raised it as a non-desirable.

I think that's all the questions at the moment, I have to go to work but I'll check in again later ;-)

KarenJ ( ) posted Wed, 14 June 2006 at 1:02 AM

Oh, I knew I missed a biggie - the links between homepage, gallery, profile etc will all come together in one place once the entire site has been converted over to Bondware. We've now finished the two biggies - forums and galleries - so the rest of the conversion won't take too long (I hope). In the meantime I know it's a pain, you can get to places but it can be like following a trail of breadcrumbs!

One quick tip: if you click the "By artist" link in the gallery header, you can enter your own or another username to go to that person's gallery in chronological order (most recent first.) A lot quicker than the old gallery search, not as easy as just clicking a link. That will change.

And the query about sorting the archive in descending or ascending date order - it's always been in the order of most recent first, but I'll ask if it's possible to put an option for a different sort on there.

You can go back into your preferences and re-submit, and that takes care of the worst 'offenders' . However, unless you actually submit a thumbnail, you get a reduced image (default), I'm still getting a little of that 'French Riviera beach' look, if'n you know what I mean..;) So work viewing is out, unless they figure out something like getting folks to actually use the warning indicators..;)

Qustion - is there any way to check who has my pics added to his/her favourites ? I've found out that 4 people made mi piccies their favourites and I have completely no idea who, especially on "Saturday Night Fever" which is rather old and not really impressive piece ;)

Right, Artemsis_Sun - I saw your Showcase-image yesterday after uploading my own for a fresh released product and just thought  after I saw images from some of my favorite artists pop up - while getting no ebots. Okay, I can live with less comments on my artistic images but it had a reason to prepare an image for the release-day. I do not dare to hope that ebots will be send out subsequently, RO is already extremly slow (4 minutes to load a forum article with DSL...) periodically and catching up with the recent images could make things worse.

Another question: What happened to the so-called "Sponsor link"? Did you move it or drop it (or am I puzzeled?!)?

Hmm. It seems very slow. I do not think it is my computer which is a fast graphics computer.

I miss being able to see more thumbs at once. It makes browsing slower. I also feel slowed down by the content blocker thumbs on the images with nudity. It would be cool if I had the option to turn that off. Perhaps when people set up their accounts they could say what they want to see like you do on other sites.

Just my thoughts.

Thanks for working to improve this.

I think the new galleries are PANTS basically

1.  I don't like the reduced quality of the image on first opening the post and having to click yet again to see it in it's full glory. I doubt very many people will do that so we are either gonna have to put up with low quality images or make our images smaller to fit in with the template of the webpage. (which apparently improves the image quality) neither of which are ideal as we spend a fair amount of time doing the images for people to look so really would appreciate the means to show them to their full potential

2.  i don't like (and i'm not sure if this can be changed by user prefs as i CAN'T navigate all that well on this site anymore due to speed and getting chucked out) but I used to have my defaults set on a black background with white writing, I found this better for viewing the images with a black background.

3.  Think the pages are tooooo fussy, too much information is distracting, we dont need to know how many people viewed in that single day, an overall figure is adequate

  1. it's sooooooooooooooooooooooooo slooooooooooooowwwww   z z z z z z z z z z z
