An avatar, in Internet mythology, is an image that represents you in a virtual world. In this particular case, it's a 3D Poser Character, exported by the Poser Pro Pack VET exporter, that can be used to represent you in Adobe Atmosphere 3D Virtual worlds. When I started in the games industry (late 80s) the character representing the player was called "ego" because it was the extension of the player's will. Then came "avatars". (My understanding of mythology is that an avatar is better than human.) I've heard that some companies have graduated to minor divinities. Carolly the Unamused

Hey there, What Pro Pack offers is a Viewpoint export format. This format is used for avatars and objects in Adobe Atmosphere Worlds. Think of Atmosphere as a 3d world where you can chat, exchange ideas, learn, explore, and look at products. It has a wide range of potental. Viewpoint can let you export differing levels of geometry quality, a sort of low grade decimation, as well as picture quality for your texture maping. For the past couple of weeks I've been hitting Atmophere pretty heavy designing worlds and more importantly avatars. The avatars have to be under 10,000 polygons, and it is best to decimate figures and rejoint them in an external 3d application such as 3d Studio Max. So the Pro Pack figures and low res characters are perfect for avatar use. I've been in the process of making decimated variations of Michael and custom poser figures as well. Pro Pack offers a few features that aren't found anywhere else that support the adobe product in avatar creation. It lets you carefully animate figures. Go to adobe.com and take a look at the new atmopshere beta. It's a fun new way of interacting on the web. -DirectorThey are used in virtual worlds to represent yourself. Microsoft had a great program called "V-Chat". It was not well known and experimental. They were 3D chat rooms. I built 12 rooms that were very popular. The avatars they used were in png format. They were similar to gif animations so your character could do wild things. There where several other folks who started similar rooms. The concept was that ultimately one could online actually go shopping in a mall or just chat in 3D. Do a search for virtual rooms or virtual chat. I am sure there are still some around. I lost interest about 1.5 years ago when MS decided not to support it and allowed anyone to use its tech. Porn folks seemed to take over. It was very popular in Europe. Ron

There is also rose. Link provided goes to the company website. http://www.moove.com/ you can make your own characters/avatars there too, and the supplied surfaces for making people are surprisingly very realistic. Avatars are more posable and versatile than in viewpoint/adobe. The scripting language for developing animations/avatars (in rose they are called actors) is relatively easy to pick up - much simpler than javascript. Importing new surfaces to the proprietary format that the program uses is easily done with a conversion tool obtainable from most actor designers or from moove directly. Later this year, it will be upgraded to a 16 bit colour version, with the added ability to create your own rooms and furniture. There will be a copy protection feature/encryption in the new version as well, to protect your work from unauthorised distribution. I'm really looking forward to that version, but even as it is right now - I really find it beats most other platforms for interactive 3d. only caveat is that its not a world - its more like a 3d ICQ. (its IP to IP, not client/server - therefore there is no 'world' per se)This site uses cookies to deliver the best experience. Our own cookies make user accounts and other features possible. Someone on the email group at the link here, mentioned PPP avatars? What are they? I thought that in Hindu mythology, an avatar was when a dead man's soul is reborn as the soul of a new baby.
