Subject: Real morphing question

I have filmed an actor and he is walking towards the camera..as he approaches just before the cutaway I want him to morph into a poser character I have imported...does anybody have any suggestions on how to do this..I can just place the poser character in but thats kinda sudden does anybody have suggestions on a slower more dramatic approach  thank you.

Final Cut Pro or After Effects?  This is an effect, so you might need software that lets you do the effect.

Now, you could do it in Poser (or whatnot) with some creative mixing.  For instance, you could fade the Poser character in using transparency/alpha.  Have them run in synch and have the Poser animated figure overlay the video, then fade in.  If the camera moved at all, you'll need to do camera matching to keep the view synchronized.  Hopefully the Poser figure completely covers the real actor or you will need to do some frame-by-frame editing.  This is why the pros use green-screens, lighting balls, and position markers.

But it really depends on the type of transition you are trying to create.

Try some of the apps from here. Like WinMorph does exactly that as far as I remember or one of the others. I also think they are all free but don't quote me on that, it's been awhile since I have been there.

Thank you both..okay does sound like it might work..I have the actor walking towards the camera..its a close show mainly from waist up...then I do the poser figure in the same shot with a clean plate and them combine them in morph software?

My final question..how do I make the poser figure larger as it walks towards the camera?

Thank you both very much.

Make sure you save your Poser files in an alfa format such as Tiff, Psd.

Making the figure look biger when closer? 2 ways that can work are 1. walk the figure closer to the camera. 2. Move camera closer to figure.  A camara focus setting of 120 moved at a distance works well on both ways.

You could try a wider-angled lens setting on the camera.

There are many ways to go about this.

You could bring the live video into Poser (say on a vertical plane) and set up your camera and figure to match the shot.  Then you could render the figure animation with a simulated 'green screen' (as Poser doesn't have alpha in render as far as I know - may be possible in Poser 6).  Then you would need software capable of turning the green into an alpha for matting over the live video.

Or, you could do the animation render in Poser with the live video playing to get the result all at once.  The problem is that Poser is not the fastest renderer around - best to do still images out to file and concatenate them into a video using the appropriate software in this case (QT Pro, FC Pro, Premiere, etc.).

Or, if you have another 3D package such as LightWave, Maya, XSI, Cinema 4D, Carrara, or anything that has some sort of support for importing Poser animated scenes, you could do the rendering there.  You may have the alpha render choice or be able to mix the live and animation for render with much fast results.

Note that for WinMorph that beryld suggested, you will need to render the animation out as stills or movie format to do the morphing between videos.  Again, depending upon the time span, complexity, and desired realism of the Poser animation, it may take a long time to render in Poser.  You'll have to see what options you have or can afford.

There is a simple way of doing it, using both Adobe's Photoshop and Jasc's Animation Shop.  At the point where you want the metamorphosis, render a still frame (perferably as a tiff), then press the single check mark and install your new figure in the exact same pose, and render a new still frame.
Open Photoshop, and import your two frames.  Use your second still frame as a background layer, and put ten layer copies of your first still frame.  Hide all the intermediate frames, and set the top frame's opacity to 90% and save the it as frame.01 of your transition.  Delete, and set the next layer to 80% opacity, and sanve as frame.02, etc.
Open Animation Shop, and place your sebsequently numbered frames, one after the other, as aa animation procession, and then save as an Avi file, and there you have it.

Could be -these apps sometimes change hands faster than I change my underware.  My version is Jasc, and it came part and parcel with Paint Shop Pro, (which I never use, BTW).

Yep, it is now Corel, I think they bought PSP in version 9. I have version 8 so it is still Jascs.

One last question how do I walk the figure towards the camera?  I can understand walking him from side to side but since he has to get bigger as he approaches I am clueless.  Please advise and thank you.

kuroyume0161 ( ) posted Tue, 20 June 2006 at 10:55 PM

You could move the camera toward the figure if the walk is in place.  You can also use a walk spline in Poser to have the figure 'actually' walk across the ground towards the camera.

Thank you I will work on the camera and walk spline and post if I get into trouble.
