Is there some way to simulate the ecosystem feature of Infinite in Esprit?

Sort of, yes. Check the scatter/replicate  feature. It allows you to spread out objects over a region. If you do is smart it will give you similar results - of course with a lot more memory involved.

It's as valid a technique as actual memory hungry polygons since it's only the final image that really matters. So check it out.
