Subject: Who favorited me?? - new feature

midrael ( ) posted Wed, 12 July 2006 at 1:55 PM · edited Sat, 01 February 2025 at 12:22 PM

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to take a moment to let you guys know about a new feature. I was recently asked about this by one of our forum members, and the question was rather timely as this has just been added under the "My Favorites" section of the site.

If you visit your "My Favorites" section, you may notice a new link called "Who favorited me."
If you click that link, you'll be able to see the usernames of everyone that currently has you listed on their favorites. A nice way to see who appreciated your work enough to consider you one of their favorites on the site!

Oh.

Well, technology enables.  But gee, this feature removes a layer of civility, IMO.  Early on after the June make-over, I was surprised to be notified another member had added me to his/her favorites, in much the same fashion as comments are flagged.  Comments I want, but I'd prefer critiques.

[Oops, wrong soap box.]

Yeah, I feel saddened by this new feature.

Saddened? Simply out of curiosity and concern, why do you feel this is a bad feature? I'd like to know. I can always pass on comments and criticism that the forum users express to the powers that be.

I've never seen the word "favorite" mutated that way but I guess if Google can make it into the dictionary and be used as a verb (cringe), nothing should surprise me.

LOL I cringed myself when I saw the word used that way, but then again they didn't ask me how to phrase that link =P

Hi David,

I also cringed at the usage.   English is a malleable language, but ouch!  They should have put quotes around "favorited," IMO.

In a way, the new feature is an invasion of privacy.  Are you keen to have a stranger come up to you and say, "I'm going to watch everything you do."  The operative word here is "stranger;"   someone who hasn't introduced himself.  As though they feel entitled, unbidden, to sit in on your life/work, and tell you they're there.  Especially when they may not say one word.

People will do that.  Stalkers will do that.  I'd rather Renderosity not bring it to my attention and tell me who  they are and that they're lurking.  Do please tell if one of them has a gun, yes, but...

Ah, yes. The favorites list. I was stunned to see how many had actually ''favorited'' me. I guess it is true that America and the world has truly ''dumbed down".

I am also, however, reminded of an old saying my dear parents used to often repeat:

"Nine damned kids and NOT ONE of them even call or visit anylonger"

WINK.

DRACE68: I don't worry about those with guns at my age. At today's costs of gasoline per gallon I can't see anyone taking their time they say they don't have to comment on other's wonderful works (yet still manage to always upload their own works) and waste a most precious bullet on 'wa'.

SMILE ....

As for 'critiques', DRACE68 ....

You must understand .... When someone like myself enjoys 'hamburger' and then is served 'steak' by someone like you and other brilliant writers, the LAST thing we are looking to do is to 'critique' . We just ENJOY.

TallPockets, brian.

I agree with the phrasing LOL and I am dyslexic and it still sounds wrong, however, I think it is nice to see that others like your work enough to add you to their list.

I never thought of it as being malicious but If people are worried about being 'stalked' around the R'osity web then maybe the staf could put an option box to let the artists choose whether or not to let people add them to thier list.
