Subject: Has anybody bought and installed these "Art of Shaders"? from daz or elseware

ddaydreams ( ) posted Sat, 15 July 2006 at 8:35 PM · edited Wed, 11 December 2024 at 6:38 AM

I'm sure I could drag all the procedural textures into one large unorganized folder, but

I'm trying to install them in a seperate shaders folder with subfolders.

Also there is no read me file to explain how and where to install the various other file types like bump and displacement, can anyone help with this

Also for just the procedural textures I'de like to have one folder that is named Art of shaders and click on that folder and have all the art of shaders subfolders
I did not want to mix them up with the standard ones that came with carrara.

I don't even know if carrara can have subfolders (folders within folders) for shaders, can it?

I don't think you can have subfolders.  When you add a folder in the browser, it asks for the type of shader the folder contents is.  Subfolders is not a type.  I have not bought the art of shaders collection.  I'm surprised that there is not a read me with it.  I don't think I've seen a DAZ download that didn't have one.  Did you check your Carrara folder for a readme file?

Yep
No read me file. There is suppose to be one. I got an email from the maker of it and am waiting for the read me file and installation video to be made available.

Wow!  It comes with an installation video?  I wouldn't think you'd need a video for a collection of shaders, but hey.  I won't complain.  Let me know what you think of the collection.  I was thinking about buying that one myself.

Thanks!

Installation should be pretty straightforward. Put it manually in your browser, if it doesn't install to a folder make the folders how you want. There isn't sub-directory support in the browser. I would think these presets would be of benefit for people not comfortable with making their own shaders.

Or for those who don't have the time to make their own shaders.  Tends to be the same foks who buy and/or download models for that same reason.

true...altho the time to make your own shader, especially procedural, is usually significantly less :)

Lol, when I first started using Bryce(eons ago) I used all the default materials in my renders; then I learned how to "roll my own" in the DTE. It's taking me longer to learn Carrara (deeper program), but I'm getting great satisfaction out of learning how to build my own shaders.

ddaydreams ( ) posted Wed, 19 July 2006 at 5:49 PM

Yep
Making your own shaders is the way to go. Both fun and informative. Caution, can be addictive!
I've made some in Bryce, Carrara, Vue, Strata3D, Zbrush also custom Photoshop Styles.

I'm also a preset freak, If any program has the ability to tweak and save a preset material or effect then I've made some and saved em.

Somtimes I'll purchase shaders just to dig into em in the editor to see how they are made.
That's why I got these. They added the missing readme file and video file.
I have downloaded the corrected files. All is well. Glad I got em. As for usefulness, only time will tell.

I may one day develope for sale as downloads, my own shaders for all the above programs.
And some freebies also.

Thanks to all for help.

I bought the package and dragged them to where the other shaders are in Carrara 5, but when I open the program and bring up the shader wizard, none of the new shaders are there.  I though there would be a folder called art of shaders, but I'm getting nothing but the ones that come preinstalled with Carrara.  I did not get a read me file when I unzipped it, so could somebody help me figure out how to install these, cause I pid for them and would like to use them.

Thanks.

David

You need to tell the browser that you want to add a folder.  From the shaders tab, just click on the little black bent page icon in the upper right corner of the window, select "add folder" from the dropdown menu, and then navigate to your Art of Shaders folder.  It should now appear at the bottom of your current shaders list.

Hi

The file at daz has been fixed to include the video that shows you the black bent page icon youre looking for and all else you need to know.

You will need to reset the download at daz to get it.

Goto your daz account page, login and click on itemized order history, look up your art of shaders dowload, you will see reset at the end of the line that art of shaders is on, click that.

Redownload Art of shaders The file you dowload will be just over 30 megs instead of the 17.6 the old one was , because of the video, theres also a read me file.

That shouldl get you going. If not , then clear your internet cache and cookies and try again.
let me know if that helped.
