Subject: Real skin for Carrara

fyrecomix ( ) posted Sun, 25 June 2006 at 7:19 PM · edited Thu, 12 December 2024 at 1:55 PM

Hi,

I have been using Poser 6 for awhile and have face_off's real skin shaders.  They work great for portrait work as they allow for making real skin easily.

I just bought Carrara and wondered if there is anything like a real skin shader for this program.  I love they way that the lighting and cameras work, but I have a little difficulty getting the Poser model's skin to look as good as when I use the Real Skin Shaders.

If anyone has any ideas, or knows of a plug-in that will do something similar, please let me know.

Thanks,

Fyre

I'm curious if importing the PZ3 file into Carrara will show the face_off real skin in Carrara?

nope, shaders are different between the 2 programs

if you want an exact transfer of the math, so the shader is the same, i made a thread around
February, but then the differences in the render engine still make the end result different

i created several skin shaders in c5p that are comparable to realskin, and IMO look better
but never got around to doing anything with them

For some reason I thought they were texture maps.  I have a method of making Carrara skin at http://www.shonner.com/drafts/carrara_skin_tutorial_a.htm if you haven't tried mine yet.

Thanks for the information!

I have seen both of your posts in searching this particular issue.

Shonner, I was talking about using shaders with texture maps.  I do like the effect that I get in Poser 6 and wondered if I can achieve the same effect easily in Carrara.  Unfortunately, although I hate to admit it, I am lazy.  That's the lure of the Real Skin Shader by face_off, it is very easy to use.

Thanks for the help, both of you.  If you think of anything else, please let me know.  Until then I will have to buckle down and see what I can do.

I'll bite. What is SkinLab2?

bwtr ( ) posted Mon, 26 June 2006 at 3:44 AM

It's a very big Photoshop file with LOTS of skin image layers which you can mix/match to suit. Hairy skin, freckled skin, white, brown, p[ink skin etc.

Hi BTWR, Is skin lab something that you made or is it a product? I'm unfamiliar with it. If it's an actual product, do the licensing rights allow free distribution. I just want to make sure that nobody get's in trouble... :-) Mark

Would this thread be a good place to share experiments? I've seen several people working on SSS with skin. It seems to enhance renders. I've messed myself with differentiation using a fake fresnel, adding a slight glow, and using procedural bump. I'd be interested in hearing from various people what they've been doing with skin.

I saw it.

I see the link is broke. Well it worked a few months ago. Cause that's where I got it. It really isn't that great anyway. Might be a helpful learning tool.
