I agree - definitely deserves to be a gallery image !
Excellent capture and presentation Tom :)
And every one said, 'If we only live,
We too will go to sea in a Sieve,---
To the hills of the Chankly Bore!'
Far and few, far and few, Are the lands where the Jumblies
live;
Their heads are green, and their hands are blue, And they went to
sea in a Sieve.

The facanating insect is large. The abdomen is about 25+mm long(1 inch) and unfolded I suspect this wasp was about 50+mm long(2 inches) when flying and catching large insects for its den.These formidable wasps are frightening to many but have buzzed me, checking things out...seeming rather non-aggressive. I am not a cicada.
I once saw one take a large cicada from a tree and leave the branch. The wasp dove several feet downward to gain enough speed to fly with the prey as large as itself. I would love to have photos of a living one...that was not the case today. Still, I am grateful for the chance.
A blue midtoned shop towel was used to set white balance and the bg is a white piece of plastic.
Enjoy! TomDart.
