Subject: 32 and 64 bit question.

iloco ( ) posted Fri, 04 August 2006 at 1:26 PM · edited Thu, 01 August 2024 at 6:23 PM

Ok I am confused with all the talk of 32 and 64 bit Vue software.

When Vue 6 becomes available will a person have to ask for 32 or 64 bit version or will both be on same install cd so can choose during the install.

With the uncertainty of when Vista will be out I am curious about all of this concerning 32 and 64 bit software.
If a person gets 32 bit vue 6 and then upgrades to Vista 64 bit would that person have to buy another version of Vue 6...........Confused.

Why not ask e-on at their web site through the enquiry form?

I'd like to know the answer if you find out as I'm thinking about upgrading my PC and it may be important.

Once in a while I look around,
I see a sound
and try to write it down
Sometimes they come out very soft
Tinkling light sound

From the snippets of information I've read at the VUE6 info page on the E-On web site, it SEEMS that VUE6 might ship with both 32 or 64 bit, and install will be at users' discretion, probably much like Lightwave is.

But then again, "All will be revealed in due time, Grasshopper...".

I'm more interested in knowing whether 64bit VUE will be able to use 32bit cows for rendering.  "Moooooooooooo............."

Veritas777 ( ) posted Fri, 04 August 2006 at 7:03 PM

...well my GUESS would be that since E-on wants to play in the BIG LEAGUES that they will follow whatever the Big Guys are doing- if LW ships with BOTH- then Vue would probably do the same thing- otherwise LW users would be upset. I don't know what AUTODESK's policy is on this- maybe I'll ask in the MAX Forum and see how the new MAX$$$ ships...

But E-on's website does seem to indicate that LOWER versions of Vue 6 will only ship as 32 bit versions --(anything below Infinite)...

Veritas777 ( ) posted Fri, 04 August 2006 at 7:18 PM

BTW- if you look at the examples on the E-on website- the INFINITE Advanced Mat Editor background is BLACK, while the "lower version" Vue 6 Advanced Mat Editor background is the old BLUE- -- (Exact same settings being shown...)   Having a BLACK background menu means you are one really COOL EVIL DUDE!

This will give Infinite owners a big STATUS SYMBOL when they post screen-shots in the Vue Forum...(My screen is BLACK, baby!... I'm VUE SIX and INFINITE!...) But then, if V6I screens can be ANY color- we may be seeing some very wild looking screen shots in the future...  Cherry Red, Lime Green- like a bag of M & M's...

Veritas777 ( ) posted Fri, 04 August 2006 at 7:33 PM

...sorry- on closer inspection the COOL Vue 6 I screens are Dark Charcoal Grey- not really BLACK...

Veritas777 ( ) posted Fri, 04 August 2006 at 8:02 PM

Both MAX 9 and Maya are shipping with BOTH 32 and 64 bit versions- so it would "appear" that this is the THING the Big Guys are doing- especially at this time when operating systems are entering a big OS transition phase... It would probably upset too many people and mess up too many business plans if people had to choose NOW which OS they would want to be using in 3-6-12 months...

Plus with VISTA still not out- no one really knows for sure what the exact specs will be- so safe to have both OS versions... I'm sure E-on is going along with this to be "in sync" with its Big Guy partners...  (If not, it will be another big Scream-Fest!)

Vue 6 issues apart, If you're upgrading your PC then you need to go the 64 bit way anyway. Once Vista is in the market properly it will sounfd the death knell for 32 bit systems, a bit like what DVD did for VCR's

Maybe. They've yanked so much out of their 'Going to The Moon' budgeted new OS that it's starting to sound more and more like XP64 with Aeroglass and some new sub-architecture. Vista is going to be laden with DRM schemes to make the MPAA/RIAA happy, and all of the schemes out there have been proven to be utter memory and resource hogs. A few of them so bad as to be worthy of 'pig farm' status. I don't know about you, but I have computers to work with, and I expect to have adequate free resources to do that work, not to check if I have an mp3 that doesn't meet Sony's approval. Now if Shane Brooks can code 'VistaLite' and let us users yank all the unneccesary crap out of the beast, It could turn out to be a good piece of code. But with M$'s record of ever expanding bloatware, I would be very cautious to start any hosannahs until the gold version is out there...

iloco ( ) posted Sat, 05 August 2006 at 6:41 AM

Now Dale that is a good post and if you were the same with the schemes(encryption/copy protection) imposed on C3d models which a lot of us see the same as you in the upcoming Vista we might get e-on to have a second look and see its loosing customers because ot it......:)

Maybe Shane Brooks can code us Vue lite to take out all that nonsense code thats required to have  models encrypted to one version of Vue and need new downloads if upgrading or buying a different version of Vue..
Funny how some want it both ways to suit their agenda at the time they are replying or who they represent. :)

It would be very dumb for E-On to ship them seperately and have to ask for which one you want at the time. Given that every OS is moving to 64Bit I'm guessing it will have both for you to either pick and choose or it will recognize which one you have on install.

Who knows, it might SHIP 32Bit and have a downloadable patch for 64Bit systems - not advised policy, but it might happen.

No such thing as a 'downloadable patch'.  The whole application has to be compiled on a 64bit compiler for it to work on a 64bit system.

thundering1 ( ) posted Sat, 05 August 2006 at 7:50 PM

Good point - didn't think about that.
Was just trying to think of "what might be easier" - but my thinking was in terms of plug-ins, which isn't a concept that would work for that.

Yeah, I'll stick with my first thought.

iloco, I think you will have to choose 32 or 64 bits. Dunno if folks who later buy  64bits system will; be able to get V6 64bits for free, though, but I think it's a little too soon for details like this. As for Vista, you don't need to wait for it for a 64bits system, WinXP already has a functionning 64bits version, very stable  too,  apparently, unlike buggy beta Vista.

I have Windows XP Pro x64-bit now, and It looks like they will only have 32-bit(as said above) for Vue 6 Easel on the Web site. But aren't the lower versions just cut down feature wise from the top versions in a way? And if so, why not a 64-bit version for them? Is the code that different?

btw..Im new to Vue if ya can tell(former Brycer).  I had Vue 5 Easel in my hands today and almost picked it up, if it weren't for hearing about V6. :)

bruno021 ( ) posted Sat, 12 August 2006 at 2:56 AM

Well check e-on's website, but there was a promo the other day, if you buy 5 EAsel now, you get 6 Easel free. Dunno if the offer has ended though.

I thought they were "cut down versions" also but apparently they're not!

I originally bought V5E and it just wouldn't work on my pc which is very high spec, it would crash eveytime I got above 2 million polygons which isn't much!

Anyway contacted a techy at Vue and he told me that V5E and V5I were very different in make up and it wasn't "just" a cut down version.

Now I'd heard this before somewhere else so took a huge leap of faith and upgraded to V5I and boy am I glad I did, works perfectly all the time, scenes well over 15 million polys and more, superb!

Don't ask me waht the difference is but it seems there is!

To answer veritas comments about the color of the interface - vue 6 will have a more customizable interface.

By default, the style is that flat interface with dark grey background. The old blue interface is still there as an option. There is the possibility of presets to make the application look and behave (keyboard shortcuts) like other apps in your workflow.

forester ( ) posted Sat, 12 August 2006 at 6:45 PM

Professional programs that I upgraded recently (Realflow4, for example) require you to choose between the 32-bit and the 64-bit versions, ... or pay for two upgrades in order to have both. Just a cautionary note..........
