I need to make about 8 or 10 different labels.

I expect to use the same design - I just need to be able to change the main words and details for each label without changing the overall design - and then to be able to print a page/single sheet with all the labels on it.  i.e. print them all in one go.

What is the quickest and easiest way to do this?

Right, go onto Microsoft word, 'Tools' - 'Letters and mailings' - 'Envelopes and labels'

On the pop-up window select 'labels'.  Type in what you want/copy paste the design, choose what type of label you want, then click 'New document'.  This will open a new document with all your designs and text laid out in the correct format, and you can modify each label and change it to what you need.

Well... the reason I was asking in this forum was because I wanted to use photoshop.

If I was going to do it in Word I'd take the label I'd made in photoshop, plonk it in the word doc - resize just by pulling the edges and or corners as needed - do the same with all the other labels until the page was filled - or I ran out of different labels....

Then I'd print it, then I'd run upstairs and get my Xyron out of the cupboard, run the sheet through that - cut each label out - peel off the backing and stick the now sticky and laminated label onto the jar... or jars.

lol!

But as I said, I first need to create the darned thing in PhotoShop.

I was just wondering what sort of things I'd need to do in Photoshop - I mean, I've never designed a label before... not in PhotoShop.

I just wondered if anyone had any suggestions - I mean I've not done much in PhotoShop that uses text - usually I use text to point out where I've done something on a screen shot, when I have a problem with say... Bryce... or Wings.

Before you mentioned word - I hadn't thought of printing it out with word (so thanks for that reminder)- but that would certainly be the easiest way - not the maillings method you mention though because I've never used that before so I'd have no idea how to do it, so just plonking 'em on a page seems much simpler to me.

It's the different things you can do with an image and text - with a jar label in mind - that I'm not sure of - in PhotoShop I mean.

I was thinking it'd be a good way to increase my knowledge of working in PhotoShop.

I'd like the text to be easily readable but not too plain...

I mean take sesame seeds - I've taken some pics of various foods: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, chick peas (- there'll be more later on).

But I wanted these labels to look good... you know sort of professional.

All I can think of is the image of the seeds with the words "Sesame Seeds" on top - which is gonna be readable but darned "homemade" looking, I wanted something better than just that.

Help?

It's just a bit difficult designing these things without knowing what can be acheived in photoshop...

First of all you wanted the 8 - 10 labels on same page to print. Design 1 label without the text and text effects. In the Layers Palette, drag this layer down to the "Create a New Layer" icon 8 to 10 times. This duplicates your basic design for number of labels needed. They will appear on top of each other. Turn on your Grid with the Snap to Grid on or create Guides with Snap to Guide on. With the Move Tool drag each label to where you want them on the page. Then start on the text and text effects. Labels and Text will all be on separate layers. Experiment with the "Add a Layer Style" icon at bottom of Layers Palette. There are so many things you can do to make them look professional but it's a little hard to explain it all.

Thanks, dreamer101, that sounds fairly simple to do.

Save the file as a layered  PSD and use that as a working file. Put your text on it, flatten and save. open the PSD again, change the text. etc.

when working with text, it's helpful to go to View/show/grid and turn on snap too. That way you can adjust the spacing etc.

What spacing?

Spacing between lines. Positioning the body of the text, etc

Getting the Labels aligned on page can be done with Grid/Guide with Snap On but you want the Text to align on the Label. I'm assuming that not all the Text will be the same length.

To get the Text centered on the Label you can link the Text with the Label and do an Align . To do this, Click one Label (in Layers palette) then click the Link icon to left of the Text (in Layers palette)  that goes with the Label then use the Align options with Move Tool selected. If doing it this way turn the Snap off.
