Hello Ilona! I like your bug series.  My shot is a stick bug, we find it a years ago in our backyard, it was a loooong bug I tell ya. After the shot been taken we took it to the park where it's belong, not in an urban backyard where to much noise and movement.

Awesome shots Ilona. They are so sharp. I can't believe you got a butterfly in flight too. They are so fast!  As for the damsel flies, the blue one is the male.

Keep on bug hunting!

Congratulations Ilona for these extra-ordinary sharp macros... all these pictures are for sure worth to upload  in your gallery !

I fully understand that you almost went into the water to capture the damsels...

(I'm not on my PC right now... visiting Lledeline & Lafayette in Orleans... we really have fun and endless discussions together... but I can't post an insect for you right now... will do it later, I promise !)

Okay Ilona, you asked for more... Please excuse the quality of these shots, it is not always easy to photograph an insect on your shirt. :) *(that is one BIG stick bug Tunde!)*

Tunde, your picture is freaking me out! That's scary.

Radlafx, awesome shot. I'll take a guess and say it's a type of hover fly, sometimes called a flower fly.

Kort, your second one is fantastic. I can't even take a guess at it though. I'm gonna have to do some research. The first one appears to be a robber fly?

Excellent and fun shots everyone!

Radlafx ( ) posted Fri, 18 August 2006 at 12:30 AM

A hover fly? When I first saw it I thought it as a mosquito because it was biting my friends finger.

Here's a bug I've yet to indentify. The funny thing about the image was the fact I was shooting a colony of digger wasps, and this guy came out of nowhere to try and catch one of the wasps. Directly behind the bug you'll notice a small group of rocks. One of the wasps had just covered it's burrow with those rocks, and blam, the hunter runs into frame in what seemed like a billionth of a second. The wasp flew away unharmed. You can see from his expression, that's he's mad at missing his prey. But not half as mad as I was that I didn't get a shot of the confrontation! Grrrr.

Ok, after looking through 3 gabillion bug pictures, I'd have to agree with you kort... assasin bug. It looks a heck of a lot like the milkweed assasin.

danob ( ) posted Sat, 19 August 2006 at 10:11 AM

Hard to say with bugs until you get other angles Korts top one is probably a robber fly of some sort
