Subject: Quasi-newbie question: P6 ready for prime time yet?

MultiMuse ( ) posted Sun, 20 August 2006 at 5:11 PM · edited Fri, 07 February 2025 at 9:05 PM

Hi. I currently have Poser5 but am still just learning the basics.

My question: Is P6 ready for prime time yet or is it still buggy, spastic, as some rumors said?

TIA

No bugs here, very stable.

Artwork and 3DToons items, create the perfect place for you toon and other figures!

Due to the childish TOS changes, I'm not allowed to link to my other products outside of Rendo anymore :(

Food for thought.....

Hi, MultiMuse.

P6 is more-or-less stable (AFAIK, with the latest SRs), but my advice would be to get familiar with P5 1st.

Why? 'cos maybe, in the not too distant future, P7 will be announced, and the upgrade cost to P6 will probably then plummet:-))

P5 was a BIG advance on its predecessors (after it got most of the bugs sorted out), and is now a reasonably stable work-horse. (There are always the occasional issues...)

P6 is very similar to P5 (with some enhancements), but if you're still learning then why not stick with P5 until you are comfortable with it and know the ins'n'outs of the various features?

Just my opinion....

Cheers,
Diolma

A lot of things have been made to work properly in P6 compared to P5.
There are also a number of useful features not found in P5.

Take the time to read other opinions posted here, overall the feeling is very positive in favour of P6.

However, it's still crippled by legacy features.

You can cancel a render in P6. You can do a small part (test area) of a render in P6. You have material groups to save in the matroom now. One click in P6 now loads what took a lot of time in P5.

P6 tells you that it cannot complete a render where P5 just froze requiring data loss on a reboot...Ctrl/Alt/Del...not good for your pc

P6 has AO. IBL. Advanced RayTrace with blur..

Keep your drives defragged and updated. Case clean. Fans cool and you'll be fine. And stay under 1.8gigs of Real memory in your scene.

The cloth room is also more stable and a lot faster in P6 making dynamic clothes
a real alternative to confoming clothes.

Did you mean Prime-TIme as in Television, or just for yourself personally?

For yourself personally, some people have made some nice points about Poser 5 and 7, but even then Poser is a very reasonably priced application for the money.

As in for Prime Time Televivion, well the answer is...That I'd love to say yes, especially with as many other lower quality cartoons that have made the airwaves in the past.  But the big truth is that Poser is still missing a few HUGE Overhauls.  Network rendering...isn't pssible yet.  Atmosphere like found in Bryce or Vue...is not happening.  And maybe the most important of all, as much as we all love the Magnets, Poser could deffinately use a Modeler Room.

Are there any tutorials out there on making clothing in the cloth room? Thanks.

I vote to move on to Poser 6.

I'm happier with the P6 performance than the P5 performance.

I most definitely use the P6 Characters a lot more than I ever used the P5 Characters.

Cheers

I can't comment on Poser 5...I jumped in on Poser 6 when I started, but, in the 8 months I've used it, the only problem I run into is when I try and render a massive pic that either the computer can't handle or Poser can't handle.  It's an easy fix by just tweeking the numbers, but, it's a stable system for me otherwise and have had no crashes or hangs.  Still cuss a blue streak with the cloth and hair room, I just can't understand how it works yet, but, that just me. Hell, I'm still trying to figure out how to paint with hair brushes in Photoshop!  LOL

If it's not a major issue or unless you need a little more punch in your projects, From what I've read on different forums, Poser 7 is supposed to be on the horizon and coming our way fast...you might want to wait and make a jump over P6. (I listen to rumors all the time, so, take that with a grain of salt.  P7 could be well over a year away for all anyone knows. :crying: )
