Mac Users, It states at the site that Bryce 5 won't work under OS 10.4 or later (Tiger).

Is this Bryce 5.0 the same one that Coral used to sell or has DAZ changed anything
in it?  Because I already have the Coral version of Bryce 5.0 and if it is the same
thing then it would sort of be a waste of time for me to download it.

Just my luck they would have to give away something I already have....

I was just looking at my Bryce4 disk remembering how much fun it was to use. This is cool!

Exactly.  I had Bryce when it was still with Corel 3 years ago, and didn't had much use for it.  So been in love w/ Poser, I didn't even notice it.

Since I recieved an email from Daz's ArtZone last night, stating that it's a free download: Bryce 5, I couldn't pass it up and since if I update my ArtZone account and get the voucher for B5.5 for $19.95 --  Just in time for my BDay!

All in all, it beats nothing,

No. I used to use Bryce 5 as my main render engine, but got Vue5i and never used it again. Bryce 5 is s - l - o - w compared to Vue. Bryce 5 is very well designed, a pleasure to use once you get the hang of it, but underpowered.

this may be stretching it a bit, but Vue is to Bryce as Bryce is to Vista Pro....there is not much comparison between them. I have all 3...actually started with VistaPro1 back whenever that was...it was still DOS. Then Bryce 2 when it was ported to PC...Bryce was hands and feet above VP...even at that stage...and then got Vue 3....now have 5. Vue is way more advanced than Bryce in rendering, lighting, vegetation, etc...Infinite, which I don't have, appears to be even more advanced, especially with the ecosystem.

Although Bryce can whip up some quick backgrounds.

No,  if you have Vue 5 I you would gain absolutely nothing by getting Bryce 5. (this isn't intended as a slam on Bryce, but the simple fact is that Vue is a better and more advanced program than Bryce).

And since for years I was a strong advocate of Bryce over Vue, the fact that I'm now advocating the opposite opinion should indicate that I'm not making a recommendation out of prejudice.

Can you render things from poser in Bryce i.e Pz3? I am not really familiar with what type of program Bryce is.

No, bryce doesn't do direct Poser imoprts. You have to export the scene as an obj and import that into Bryce.

Another reason I always reccommend Vue or Carrara over Bryce.

The obj export/import idea works fine, but IMO it's just an unnecessary extra step that Vue  and carrara eliminate.

But if you don't currently have Bryce, you have nothing to lose by getting this free version and trying it for yourself.

you can import Poser figures into Bryce, it's just a little complicated (there's the 'eyeball' problem, and materials need to be sought out and transferred in when importing a Poser figure). You can't alter the pose once it's in Bryce, but for that, there's Daz Studio (Heresy!..;).

There's a 'helper' program called Grouper that will help map Poser textures for export to Bryce. Bryce has thousands of materials (mostly rocks..just kidding..;) does backgrounds, and if you import the figure in, you have real, working shadows (a help to us 'use Bryce for a background' types..;) Plus, you can have much larger landscapes than Poser will give you..;)

Hey, it's free. I have a strange approach to rendering; I consider the programs as tools, rather than ends in themselves. I'm interested in making good pictures, so how I get there isn't as important to me..;)  Vue is a good program (I have Vue 3, which is surprisingly like Bryce..;) but on my budget, free is good.

The 'other shoe drops' is that if you get the free download, you get the option to upgrade to Bryce 6 (which Daz has been working on for some time, and will be released 'real soon'..;) Many of the complaints people have had with Bryce might be fixed in it (if I could remember all the complaints,..;)

Hey, get it or not, but when someone offers something like this for free, it's no biggie to download it. You might even have fun with it...and you'll never complain about long Poser renders again..;)

I was just wondering. Actually I've been using pov-ray for rendering instead of Firelfy. It is the same when using pov-ray you have to save your PZ3 and then export it as an .obj into pov-ray. I really like the way pov-ray renders and the windows version of pov-ray ain't half bad.

There's lots of nice free Bryce content out there (including at DAZ).  Might be worth downloading for that reason. 

Maybe you could even export some of it for use in Vue or Poser?

Bryce presets made from imported meshes can be exported, but if it is made from Bryce primitives it is not exportable. and in ther case of an item made from a combination of the tow, it's generally not exportable, but if you ungoup it, you can export the parts made from theimported  mesh, but not the primitives.

Aslo, terrains are exportable

Actually with Daz Studio you can import poser content into Bryce with little to no trouble at all.

But he was asking about importing Bryce stuff into Poser, which isn't quite as simple

Bryce 5 stuff can't. According to Daz, Bryce 6 might be able to export objects, even Boolean ones (if we get any more info..;)
