edit to say that the solar system is going to be totaly out of date soon. There are more than 9 planets now.

Joelglaine, I hated the new layout, too (I still do dislike some of it), but, if it's the microdot product icons that are the problem, they can be swtched to the "large" setting.

That thing with the planets is totally NUTS!

Pluto should be downgraded to what it is, a lump of rock at the edge of our system like many thousands or millions of them over there!

I heard that because of this re-classification the Moon might even be called a planet!!

Apparently the coupon is only good for E-Frontier products.
If you try to use it for 3rd party products you get that message.
For instance you can get the discount on Miki, but not
on GND.

Tashar59 ( ) posted Mon, 21 August 2006 at 12:41 PM

Didn't they find another planet past Pluto? I think that is what started it all. They were wanting to call it a Planetiod or something like that due to size but I think it was bigger than Pluto so now everything is being re-thought.

I remember an old song that had the line, " little blue planet, 3rd no 4th, no wait 3rd, no 4th from the sun, come and show me what you've done."

Hey, it was only 500 years ago, the earth was flat.

Yeah, it's something like 2004 UB something, but the astronomer who discovered it called it Xena (and if I recall, it has a moon named Gabrielle, LOL). Plus, they want to count Charon (Pluto's moon) as a planet and Ceres (the large asteroid) as a planet too. Things sure change though, when I studied the solar system as a child, Jupiter had 13 moons...doesn't it have like 50+ now? Thanks for this info on the discount too, I would have missed it. The new planet has been tenatively named Xena and its saletlite is called Gabrielle. They're also  proposing designating the asteroid Ceres and Pluto's moon Charon as planets

They've also proposed a new class of planteoids caslled Plutons (plto-type objects) of which the Kupier Belyt contains several thousand

That's so humanity can say they have been to another planet. The moon is as far as humanity will ever get in space with our antiquated form of space travel and I don’t ever see that changing even in my son’s lifetime. And spare me the intelligent life BS as well. What form of ANY intelligent life would want any part of a self-centered and violent species we humans are?

I think these UFO sightings are of intelligent beings checking up on us to make sure we DON’T get any farther than our moon.

Nah, whoever you heard was wrong on that one. The moon can't qualify as a planet because it's rotational gravity center is inside the earth. So it is and will remain a sattelite.

Tashar59 ( ) posted Mon, 21 August 2006 at 3:42 PM

At Sealtm2.

Yeah, we all know that the aliens, which Elvis is administrator, have a base on the moon and told the americans not to come back. It has nothing to do with the fact that the missions never really took place and were shot on a studio set at Nickelodeon Studios, which was thier start to fame.

tainted_heart ( ) posted Mon, 21 August 2006 at 5:40 PM

Before the moon can be called a planet, it has to orbit the sun. The moon is very slowly "inching" itself away from the earth, but it will probably be about a billion years before it leaves earth orbit and starts to orbit the sun. You have quite a long time before you start singing "When the planet moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie...that's amore!" ;)

It's all fun and games...

Moon a planet no... its center of Gravity is the Earth, therefore it is a satellite.

Pluto and Charon are now a Double Planet. Ceres (in the Asteriod Belt) is now a Planet, and 2003 UA313 is now a Planet and it also has one moon. Xena and Gabrielle are the code name for these last two, but those are not the official Names. (However, if they take too long to name them, everyone will call them by those names!)  There is also another classification, and that is a Pluton. That is for bodies that have a highly unusal orbit. There are also up to 100 items that they do not have enough Mass and Gravitational Data to classify as a Planet or a Pluton.

What I am not clear on is this ---- do you have to have a Passport Membership for this ? .... also can you use it multiple times ?

Morgano ( ) posted Tue, 22 August 2006 at 1:31 AM

It's definitely not confined to Passport members;  it's open to everyone.    I'd assume that it's a once-only thing, per individual.  I've had a new e-mail from CP elaborating on the offer and displaying the coupon name in green-on-black, rather than the beige-on-off-white of the original (I don't fault CP's generosity, but I'd never have been able to read that coupon, as originally displayed, if Fejj hadn't deciphered it).

The problem with this planet, non-planet thing is that Pluto, although actually a pluton, won't be downgraded, because it is one of the "traditional" planets, i.e., members of the public have gotten used to it being called a planet, so they will probably not remove its planet sttatus. As one of the articles on the subject said, pluto will probably be "grandfathered in as a traditional planet".

Ceres was at one time considered a planet, so if the proposed change goes into effect, it will simpley be regaining the planet status it originally had and lost about a century ago.

The moon can't be upgraded to a planet because it is clearly a sattelite of a larger body and not a planet in its own right. They might, however, invent a new category, planet-type sattelites, i.e., moons that would be considered planets if they weren't sattelites (as opposed to the majority of moons which would be asteroids or plutons). This category would include the Moon, Io, Titan, etc.

The reason Charon is being considerd for planet status, is that Pluto and Charon are so close in size, that they appear to be a bibary planet (2 planets gravitiationally bound to each other) rahter than a planet and its moon. (that status has also been proposed for the earth and the moon in the past, because of how unusually large the moon is in relation to the size of the earth - most moons are tiny by comparison to their parent planet. Even the moons like Io and tatan, which are larger than the earth, are tiny by comparison to their enormous parent palnets.

We'll be releasing Charon, Ceres and Xena (UB313) within a week as we are assuming that the IAU committee's proposal will be approved on Thursday.

I thought anything greater that Pluto's characteristics will be a Pluton. I thought they set it so Pluto was the upper limit for a Planet (or lower limit for a Pluton).?  I may have read that wrong....

Greater than Pluto size =planet.  Pluto size or less= Pluton.

At least from what I read.  Or until they change their minds again.

I love the things that challenge convention! Wheeeeeeeee!  I'm still waiting for them to remove Jupiter from the planets and reclassifiy it as a "failed Star"!  Bianary star system anyone?

Yeah,  Joe that's pretty much what I understand too, but Pluto is being treated as an axception because of its traditional palnet status. Properly, Pluto is a Pluton, bit it is traditionally considered a planet, so the new proposal allows it to keep its planet status.

Attached Link: 3d solar system model

The International Astronomical Union has voted this morning (afternoon in Prague). There are now eight planets in the Solar System. A new category called Dwarf Planets has been created that Pluto is now the prototype for and officially includes Ceres and UB313, aka Xena. You can read the details here.

http://www.iau2006.org/mirror/www.iau.org/iau0603/index.html

e frontier and Poser Science are releasing an updated Solar System today that includes the eight planets, Pluto, Ceres and Xena. This will be a free upgrade to the product.

Thanks for your interest.
