There aren't many things that annoy me in Photoshop, compared to some other software where a lot annoys me. Photoshop is pretty well designed, but there is one thing that irritates me frequently.

Suppose I've been working on Layer 1, and I now want to draw something on Layer 5. I switch to Layer 5, activate the paint tool, and - oops! Don't like that! Undo - try again - and find I'm painting on Layer 1. Why should undo switch layers like that? It catches me out over and over again.

Any other niggles you care to name?

Yep!  That gets to me too! 

I have another one.  I would like to have blending brushes, not smudging, blending brushes!

Most likely you have the Auto Select Layer checked on the Move Tool option. You selected the Layer 5 in the Layers Palette but on the way over to the Brush Tool you touched a Layer 1 object on the canvas. I rarely turn on Auto Select Layer.

One thing that bugs me is if you do a selection of something with squared corners then do a select > modify > expand, the corners get cut off. I keep having to look up the way around it then forget for the next time. Another thing with selection. If you Select All you can't do a select > modify > contract but Image Ready will let you do it.

I don't have Auto Select Layer on and I have the same problem.  I am going to pay closer attention to this to see if I can figure out what I am doing wrong.

I still want a blender brush! 

When you select all, instead of contract use transform selection. Try the same thing instead of expand if you want sharp corners :)

True but still a lot easier to be able to plug in number of pixels for expand and contract.

The thing that bugs the hell out of me is not having a keyboard shortcut to rotate a brush, there's one to re-size and that's it, nothing else...hope somebody from Adobe is reading this :)

Dreamer101 you can enter pixel or any other value for width & height in options bar :)

I know it's stupid, but the thing that annoys me the MOST is that I can't use the cursor keys to move around on an image... it would be so convenient with the really big ones... Lou.

When I need to rotate a brush several times, I pull the brush palette from the dock and click on the Brush Tip Shape. Just drag the arrow around the circle to whatever angle and see the preview of the brush at the same time. 

It's easier to use the space bar as a temporary hand tool to move around your image. When you release the space bar the tool you were using before is still selected. One of my favorite keyboard shortcuts.

And back to the Transform Selection , i'm lazy. Yes, you can put in pixels instead of percent and you can position it where ever you want including moving from a relative position. You can angle, rotate and skew. But say you have 1 square of an unknown size and you want to evenly expand the selection of this square by say 5px on each side.  You would have to link W to H and add 10px to width or height of square. Once you have clicked Transform Selection you can't click on Info palette (if it wasn't already open) to see what size was to add the 10px to. I'm just saying it would be so much simplier for a lazy person to Select > Modify > Expand 5px without getting the stupid cut off corners.

dreamer101 says: "I'm lazy".  I have often wondered how long it will take before we can think of a questions and the answer will automatically appear in a pop up window or drop down box on the screen!  It sure would be a nice feature for we who are often unable to locate, too lazy, or too forgetful to look up an answer.  But, then, there would practically be no use for this forum.  :lol:

How about the price of Photoshop compared to Paint  Shop Pro... I find that very annoying...

I find it quite surprising some of the things that have keyboard shortcuts and those that don't.

Oh, and what about the "shortcut" for Save to Web: Ctrl-Shift-Alt-S - you need to be a concert pianist to hit that one!

lol - you know, I've NEVER used that shortcut for save to web - but I'm from 'old school' and have the ALT-F then W combination down to milliseconds ;-)

The comment that really caught me is the 'I'll be dead by then' one.......... you know, I honestly don't think any of us will, barring accidents.  Look at what has been invented over the last few years..... a mouse that reacts to your eye movement.... chimps creating basic shapes on screen by thinking of them.... you really think it'll take more than 50 years to get thought systems into homes?  You can get a fingerprint scanner/identifier on your home computer for less than $30 now......that was Sci-Fi material 20 years ago!!!

Unfortunately we'll all be out of hobbies when it gets to the stage that we imagine a complete picture and Photoshop draws it for us...... sigh - now I hope I'm gone by THAT time!

I use the Save To Web shortcut all the time, on both Mac and PC, and I like it just fine. Then again, I used to be a piano teacher. ;-)

Thanks ReBorn!  I hope so too.  My state of mind is young, my health....well, a bit iffy at times, but I adapt well.  Positive thinking is a key to happiness and peace!   And now painting is my passion.  Discovered that about 1 1/2 years ago.  Wow! Am I having fun!

The release of new versions that cost $$$ but dont really give you alot more, the tantalising taste of the vanishing point tool whirled me into a love affair and false sense that i wasn't a 'real' re-toucher unless I perchased CS2 with its shiny new toolset. I have indeed found the vanishing point tool quite usefull when stitching extensions etc but it wasnt worth the extra money IMHO

I was a student, i want to be a proffesional and I know that if i wanna work in any re-touch house ineed experience of the 'newest' PS, that sucks :-( Adobe taking from such a poor man like me!

When i used to use PS 7.0 and there was no hot key for Fill. OMG that was the worst took so long to make borders the oldschool way =)

ALT+BACKSPACE is shortcut for fill, I use PS7 :)

O really i didnt know that lol. Well i use CS2 now so thanks anyways.=)

CTRL+BACKSPACE fill with background color
ALT+BACKSPACE fill with foreground color
CTRL+SHIFT+BACKSPACE fill the object on transparent layer with background color
ALT+SHIFT+BACKSPACE fill the object on transparent layer with foreground color

Try it, it should work in CS versions. Those are very often used shortcuts in PS :)

For this purpose there is "tool presets" palette. Choose the brush, set the size, dynamics, color, etc. and then save as tool preset. Now you can use it any time, anywhere quick and easy :)

It bugs me that I can't change my brush size whilst in the middle of painting something without lifting my pen up. I often paint with a light opacity so when I stop and start to change brush size I get a 'tide line' where the colour meets. And I can't use the paint bucket in that situation as my outlines are often sketchy and broken, so I like the airbrush for painting transparent fabrics. I just want to be in the middle of colouring something, and without lifting my pen and losing my place to be able to use the [ ] to change brush size mid flow. And yes, as some one else mentioned a 'blend' tool a la Painter would be nicer than a 'smudge'. I could get rid of my tide lines better ; ) Oh yeah, and finally, the type tool bugs me too . At work I use CS ( my company are cheapskates and won't upgrade me ) and for instance I have a template I made to drop dress drawings into. I had to make pages for 20 odd designs today. I type the identifying design number at a big size 30 so no one can miss it..........between making each of my 20 pages the silly tool kept reverting to size 14 !! Arrrrggg However at home I use CS2 and it doesn't do that. It stays set at whatever size font until I change it !?!

I use PS7 - probably like many other people I've installed loads of brushes over time - the only thing is, I've got so many the list goes right off the right hand of the screen.  Is there any way of "organising" brushes - say alphabetically in folders - so you can just go to the folders and look at the brushes in there before choosing???  Am I asking for the moon, stars, planets (excluding Pluto now, lol)

Why dont you create folder named for example PS brushes and place him in My documents or somewhere where you`ll find it easily. Then you can create sub folders and name them (animals, plants, hair, etc). When you need specific brush set just load it from there. At least thats how I do it :)

Hi Tantarus, never thought of that (duh!).  It's just such a nuisance when I get brushes that I can't possibly access cos their names begin with "M" onwards ............
