Subject: The Regular Monthly Challenge

bclaytonphoto ( ) posted Tue, 29 August 2006 at 8:46 PM · edited Thu, 30 January 2025 at 4:17 PM

Hi gang..I wanted to bring this up for discussion...

I would like to run the regualar monthly Challenge in the "standard" Renderosity Challenge format.
just like the genre challenge that was recently started.

There are a few reasons I'd like to do this..
One, it is easier for the staff to manage.
Two, It's more consistant with everything else on this site.

Now...I'd like to come up with some sort of name for this one.....So give me your best ideas..

The other question is..what would you think about having voting for the winner..and the winner chooses the next subject?

It's really up to everyone here...

It's not  like it's for a million dollars..but it does make thing a little more interesting..
It's still just for fun..

Please post your thoughts and questions and ideas in this thread..

I think it's a great idea, especially if you don't know who your voting for, otherwise, it's another popularity contest!! So I guess that means that you can't also post the photo in your gallery OR folks would know  it's you right???

bclaytonphoto ( ) posted Tue, 29 August 2006 at 9:15 PM

well, we can make the challenge annonymous..if the members would like that..But it doesn't have to be..it's really up to you folks..

Excellent idea Bruce... I agree with nongo...

I just think by past observations, the popularity contest gets in the way... I think annonymous is best!!!! Makes it more fair too!!! It wouldn't take you long to agree with me if you see the same person or persons winning each time?? and it would be nice if we at least had more members voting... not just 19 like the genre challenge... 19 is just not enough to get a good result??

ReBorne ( ) posted Tue, 29 August 2006 at 9:58 PM

I definately think anonymous entries are best...... in the old days (01/02 ish) I did naff in the monthly challenges.... when it went anon I won 3 in a row....... not that I wasn't popular of course, I just didn't suck up as well as other people! lol.....

Even if its anonymous I would still be able to figure out who took what. e.g. posts a photo of an old radio its gotta be Kort (TwoPynts) right? Then there is this guy who posts a photo of an audio I/O device. Well who on Rostiy is an audio engineer? Is it pushinfaders? Oh and if someone keeps the exif attached or note where the photo was taken it could be pretty obvious. JMHO and 2 hence worth.

Question the question. Answer the question. Question the answer...

I wish I knew what I was gonna say :oP

inshaala ( ) posted Wed, 30 August 2006 at 2:08 AM

gotta say its a good idea - and have it anon for reasons stated above.  You might kinda guess at who took the shot, but are you going to vote for it if you think it might be that person and thus consciously voting for the person rather than the shot (and in your mind you arent even certain that who you think it is took that shot)? (hope that made sense...)

Certainly agree about the anonymous aspect it is a fun thing and this will help to keep it that way

Ok...the annonymous things isobvious..everyone likes that idea...

Now..next question..do we keep two challenges? do we merge them into one?
if they stay seperate, what do we call the "regular challenge" ??

I personally like it with no voting and artists known..that way as it develops over the month I get to view their galleries, etc. Anyway, no big deal here. I will go with what the bunch here perfers.  Should be fun either way...    Tom.

Valerie-Ducom ( ) posted Wed, 30 August 2006 at 8:36 AM

Bruce,

Personally, I like make two challenges distincts. Although science et technologie, I  not had the time to put my photo LOL....
I think  these challenges are a motivation for all member for participat in the forum. And you know, the motivation is a very good element ...

Now, explain me your idea for to join this two, for example in August: "science and technology" and perspective??? I believe this would be too complicated by someone

It is my point of view...

bentchick ( ) posted Wed, 30 August 2006 at 10:31 AM

I agree with Tom, I like the fact that it's not a popularity contest, just a challenge to post your latest photo on a particular subject. I also like seeing who's posting what, so if I want to ask that particular artist about a process they're using, I can!

I like too

Radlafx ( ) posted Wed, 30 August 2006 at 1:59 PM

How about two in one? Or one in two? I get the idea now and I like it.

Question the question. Answer the question. Question the answer...

I like haveing 2 -- it makes the photo forum a bit more visible on RR's radar, if you know what I mean. Just name each one something different. Keep the Genre Challenge the Genre Challenge and the Regular one call the Photographer's Choice Challenge or something like that. I am okay with moving it to the Contests section. We have enough DITIs and Simons to keep us occupied here I think. ;]

With a genre challenge with voting, why not just keep the monthly challenge as its own intity and let it be done as before, each poster identified.   To me this make it even more interesting, especially when a poster puts the second one up.     This is my thought, as before.  Still, whatever will work depending on members opinions.    Tom

nongo ( ) posted Wed, 30 August 2006 at 9:44 PM

Actually after reading all your ideas, I have to agree with Tom, about the voting part, since we are already voting on the genre one, maybe  let's NOT vote on the "photographer's choice" one as well. because we already have enough troubles coming up with the idea for the "monthly challenge" let alone getting enough votes to make it matter. Maybe, if each artist who actually entered in the photographer's choice, would actually participate in the next month's selection and or at least help in the voting for the subject, maybe we could get more interesting ideas and participation in the forum this way????? Did that make any sense???? I almost lost my self, LOL!!!! It seems we don't have a very good cross section of voting for the next challenge or even a good new "fresh idea" list of subjects to choose from... IMHO...   Akemi

In other words our list of choices needs help!!!!!!!

babuci ( ) posted Thu, 31 August 2006 at 6:05 AM

Yes, me too like 2 challenges. Makes my mind occupied all the time, to look for "matching" subject  depending on a challenge type. I also like to see others creative mind ,what they come up with. Names for a challenges sound good!

Ok.....I'm ok with what ever the majority decides..I don't see a clear decision.
Now, for the Photographers choice challenge..

How do we decide on what is the next theme?
I saw the thread for the last one, and it look like everyone discusses it..
If that's the way you guys want to do it..that's fine..It just seems like it's drawing the process out too much in my opinion..

The reason i suggest vting on the Choice challenge, is by allowing the winner to choose a theme..It's freash every month. I don't see the need to work from a ;ist..i would prefer to let people use their imagination..

We used to do a challenge very much like this in the Mojo forum..It ran for about two years and we never did the same theme twice..

Again...I will go with what ever the group decides..

Ifd you prefer to work froma list of challenge ideas...maybe it's time for a new list..

You know........ I think the list thing would really work best! We should start a thread asking everyone for ideas and make a list out of it that would take a through a year or two, then just go down the list every month and post the next challenge. That way there doesn't have to be a vote and it would be more straight forward, IMHO!!!

Yes Bruce, I think it will be better if our Challenge was anonymous, and it will be more interesting for everyone. We have all some friends here, and it's easy to vote for them.... One vote per person will be perfect ! You know what, I'm shure RR will be more interesting with some ideas as this one ;o))))) With you and Danny, the things will change in a better way. Have a nice night.

TomDart ( ) posted Thu, 31 August 2006 at 6:07 PM

I like the list idea.  For the challenge,  the mod can suggest or even call the theme..afterall,  it is to be a challenge!  Or list a few possibilities and in a limited number of days folks get to choose with the favorite getting the nod that month.  For each to suggest an idea does seem a bit cumbrsome.

We could alway have a thread only for developing a list of possibles...get a bunch done in a hurry. I would put a time limit on this thread to encourage early suggestions.  Then again, I am not the one who has to do it!        Tom.

TomDart ( ) posted Thu, 31 August 2006 at 10:43 PM

Late nite thought...if this thread get you mods nowhere, please just make a call and go with it. I am sure we can all handle your decisions.   We seem reasonable enough so far !  : )
