Subject: Newbie question on Vue Infinite -- Can Vue model a simple castle?

3DVim ( ) posted Tue, 05 September 2006 at 5:53 AM · edited Sat, 11 January 2025 at 2:49 AM

Hello fellow forum members,

I just found out that LightWave 9 is currently priced for only $100 more than Vue 5 (or 6) Infinite, but I also heard that Vue used to be a plugin for LightWave, although I'm not sure if the latter is correct info.

I'm new to 3D software other than Poser and Bryce.   I've heard lots of great words about Vue's landscaping and vegetation capability, but I wonder if Vue Infinite can do decent modeling work.

How's Vue Infinite's modeling capacity?  Can we use Vue Infinite to model a simple castle or house?

Thanks!

hi,

you can use vue for basic modeling like buildings and such but you cant realy use it for complex storys like human-modeling (sorry my english ist not the best).

better said you can create some buildings buts its not realy modeling as its stand for.. its more like playing with lego-stones...

vue is more for landscaping and animation as for modeling.

Hiya 3D Vim

Vue is included in LW as they can now talk to each other and exchange info if you have both apps installed. Vue has always been 'it's ownn app', standalone as it were.

Modelling is do-able in Vue but as it has no face/point manipulation available it's rather more difficult than in a polygon style modeller. But booleans do work quite well in Vue and once modelled with booleans, it can be converted to polygon mesh with the click of a switch as it were.

They don't allow the continuious tweaking control that a polygon/mesh modeller would but turn out a quite good mesh that is fully exportable to another polygon/mesh type of app to be tweaked in, and re imported back to Vue. This only really works apparently, from Vue5 onwards as it seems older versions didn't export. I don't really know for sure as I've only played with the demo, but these are reported results from other users as well.

Hope this helps some what.

Thank you bobbystahr and schoesser, for the inputs.

I think I've got some ideas about Vue 5 Infinite's modelling capacity now.

Thanks again!

Thank you all for the inputs,

BTW, for modeling, I just got some info from other forums re:  ZBrush and Hexagon.   Judging from their respective galleries, it seems to me that ZBrush is used more in modeling/sculpting creatures or human forms, while Hexagon is used more for artifacts.  (I found Hexagon images in the Carrara gallery.)

Wings 3D is free but its gallery here doesn't impress.

I also heard that Silo is nice in creating conforming clothes for Poser figures, but I have no ideas re: its usages in other modeling capacity.   I will check them out visiting their respective forums.

Thanks again!

How much are you looking to invest, 3DVim?

Obviously, Silo is a great modelling app for the price...as is Lightwave since it's price drop. Newtek are working hard to improve Lightwave from the stagnation it suffered for a few years.
Modellers are a matter of personal preference and for me the best SubD modelling app available at the moment is Luxology's Modo...but then again we are all different and I think the best somebody can do is point you to different modelling apps so you can try the demo's out yourself.

I think anybody would find it difficult to dissagree that for a limited budget (sub $100) then Silo is difficult to beat though.

Cheers

Personally I use & recommend Zbrush for organic models.
It's just fantastic.
I don't do buildings and the like just yet, so I can not really offer any sound advice in that department.

However...here is an example of a castle I did entirely in vue with booleans.
So ...there are possibilities.

It's a shame stupidity isn't painful.
