Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 03 7:06 am)
My choice: two different external USB drives, one of which is stored away from the comp and one attached to it - albeit powered-down while I don't need. My backup method: everytime I install something or create something, I fire up the external drive, hit "ICE Mirror" that makes a mirror image of the whole of Poser installation and a special "Renders" folders that contains new work. Once done (usually only takes a few seconds), I power down the external drive. Quick and clean. Then once a week, I do the same to the other external drive - in effect having two different backups on two different external drives. This I do because there exists the slight possibility that a power surge kills not only the main hd of the comp, but also the attached external drive. The data is backed up elsewhere, so I essentially lose only a week's worth in the absolute worst-case scenario (well to be honest my house could burn down to a charred pile of rubbish, but I doubt my main concerns would be Poser in such an event anyway). I, too, absolutely HATE to hassle with CDs and DVDs. ICE Mirror is also very easy to use and is free (you can get it by googling it).
@ Phantast -- you are certainly welcome. I hate losing data -- even when it's not "significant" data. Like I did here recently.
@ 12rounds -- I've never tried ICE Mirror to compare. One advantage of Back2zip is that it's fully automatic -- and requires no direct intervention from me once its set up and running. That's a feature that I like a lot.
And as far as various potential disasters are concerned -- like fires, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and so forth -- if the US government would agree to let us store our data in Cheyenne Mountain: then perhaps we could continue to do our all-important Poser renders after a nuclear attack.........

This is in response to those occasional "My HD crashed and I lost all of my data!" threads. To me, burning everything to DVD is a chore that I'd rather avoid. If you have or can afford two hard drives -- then here's a link to a free data backup program called Back2zip. It works across networks, too. We use it at my office, and I'm using it at home.
It literally takes about 2 seconds to install, and it's super-easy to use. Just give it a backup folder destination; list the folders that you want backed up; set the level of compression for the backups; and set up your backup schedule.
Warning: the first backup pass can take awhile -- especially if you select high compression and have huge directories. But once the initial backup is done, then the software will automatically do differential backups every day as per your schedule.
Insofar as I know, this is PC-only.
I hope that this can help to prevent someone from losing stuff that you can't get back.
