Subject: From Poser to MS Flight Simulator: is it possible?

giorgio_2004 ( ) posted Thu, 28 September 2006 at 4:18 AM · edited Sat, 11 January 2025 at 1:18 PM

I am not only crazy with Poser, actually my first love is flight simulation, and I use Microsoft FS9  (waiting for FSX).

I'd like to use Poser to create some static human figures to insert into a FS scenario: for example flight attendants, passengers, and so on.

I know that theoretically it is possible (I have seen some free add-ons made this way) but I have no idea about the programs and the procedure needed to make the conversion.  Can someone help me, please?

I intend to use the converted figures only for my personal use and amusement, not redistributing them (not even for free).

probably be easier to do the reverse; do a screencap (if the game allows), save as a .jpg, .png, or whatever fits your fancy, then import it as a background. Match lighting angles and colors, and you're good to go.

No, pakled, I was unclear.... (my English is not perfect, forgive me). I do not want to create a 2D background, nor a Poser scene.

What I would like is to INSERT a Poser character or prop inside the 3D environment of the game, as a 3D object.

Getting an object out of Poser is easy, you just export it as an .obj or a .3ds file.
The tricky part would be to import a file into the game program.  Unless it
has an import option you'd have to hack the code.  Also unless the game
allows you to rig the character, you'd just end up with a static character,
you wouldn't be able to change its pose. Perhaps you need to ask this
same question on a games forum.

Thanks Fazzel. I don't need to change it's pose, a static object would be sufficient.

I'll ask this in a FS forum. I am SURE it can be done, just need some clues to find the right way.

I think you can use the Milkshape modeler to convert from some of the game formats - whether it works the other way I don't know. You may have problems with the sizes though - most of the Poser figures AFAIK have way more polygone than most game figures. Geralday has some low-poly figures that might be more appropriate.

Like lmckenzie mentioned, many Poser models (including the Poser 4 people) have way more polygons than game engines can handle. Even at just over 16,000 polys, the Poser 4 female would slow down any game renderer... and this doesn't even include clothing or hair!

Also, make sure to read the useage licences very carefully: many Poser models do not allow for distribution of the model in another format. In fact, one of my friends got "slammed" in the forums for simply offering to convert a 3ds model to obj format for someone else.
