It's fairly rare to find a category where somebody hasn't created Poser or 3D models, but marching bands seem to fall into that void.

At first, I was looking for cymbals and finally pulled some out of a drum set.

Then, I couldn't find one of those huge sideways drums.

I cannot recall seeing any uniforms anywhere. It's one of those odd niche categories that nobody has ventured into yet.

It's a shame that 3D Cafe has their free stuff area under construction because they had a huge selection of 3D musical instruments, including many of what you are looking for in this thread.

You can try sending them an email and ask how long it will be until their free stuff is back online. It's been months already and I keep hoping it will be soon, but another month passes and nothing.

A few years ago, I thought I'd downloaded most of the worthwhile content available at 3dCafe and didn't get one of those huge drums. It's always possible that it was subsequently added.

It's always a little strange when a category can be found where there's been little modeling interest.

So...... What are the things most lacking in the reasonably-priced instrument models? In general I've seen few decent larger brass, and the majority of the violins look like shoeboxes with f-holes. (There is a decent one now, tho...Poserized tho not posable). As yet I'm not sure I could put together an orchestra without a lot of searching and a fair amount of cost (as some of the instruments are only at TurboSquid). Some of the more popular "folk" and other-culture instruments get short shrift as well. Dulcimer? Lap harp? Uke? Shakuhachi? Band-wise, is the complete complement out there, with accessories? Glock? Bass with strap? Euphonium? Lyre clips? Shakos we got.. By the by, there's another thread going on right now concerning some of the technicalities (and possibilities) of posing drums.

you are a commited poser..;) wow. I mainly model rock keyboards (easier than it looks..;), but maybe I should try some of the other instruments (how would you make a violin poseable? pegs turn? string goes down? honest, I'm just curious).

 

I'm not sure, really! Just seems there ought to be something... I admit, tho, making oscillating strings would be an....interesting....task! I've had my eye on that pose set for a while, as well as the DAZ instruments. From the previews, tho, the strings still seem rather chunky. Still only seen once decent violin. Say....weren't the lads at Endless Wave working on a koto? Surprised if they didn't have a shakuhachi by now, too. Pakled, you figure on borrowing Ockham's scripts for your next keyboard? Great resource, Don, and thank you. I also laud you for including the middle-eastern poses in your set. All I know is from doing FOH mixing with a few groups, but the poses look correct to me!

I can't see much reason for making most instruments poseable. Posing pegs and strings is probably not a likely use. In an animation for example, one could not see the peg turning if fingers/hand obscured it. The PP trumpet has poseable valves, perhaps useful. The DAZ trombone has a moving slide, an essential for that instrument. Most of the bagpipes I found were very hard to pose, some broke up in posing. Pipes would be a hard one to make poseable, I'd love to see a really good one with bag morphs and pipe movement. Piano keys that go up and down? Maybe a little too detailed for some use, but for a player piano that would be cool, especially for an animation. A lot of work I'd guess to do tho. There are lotsa string instruments to be found, but woodwinds are very rare. There is a good flute at RO I think listed above. Poseable keys on wood winds would be hardly noticed in any render with fingers covring them. Here are some missing instruments... Cello (the one in the pose set is the scaled down bass) Tuba and Sousaphone (the Sousa at PP will not fit Poser people correctly) Bagpipes that are accurate and work. Tympani Cornet Classic Pipe Organ and tho there are may free instuments, many of them are not of the best rendering quality, so improvements are always needed.

There you go, pakled. Do that four-manual church organ! It's just duplication, right? You do know about ockham's MIDI-controlled piano, right Don? Of course making a figure pose work would be tougher. One thing I've noticed about a lot of the instruments is that they are suitable mostly for longer shots. Very few are detailed enough meshes to stand up to a head-and-shoulders of a performer. And it is in those cases that very subtle movements would be visible. (I also note...it's sort of a sore point with me...that most of the texture maps are too clean. Basically flood-fill stuff. That's nice for showroom at Yamaha, but not good for a realistic pic of a working instrument). Not complaining, mind you! I think it is so generous of the Poser community that you can assemble an ensemble (say that three times fast) for free or for a reasonable price.

The uniform that Phil did was after a request that I made several years ago.  The uniform was based on the Seattle Cascades Drum and Bugle Corps uniform, and was designed to fit Michael if I remember right. 

hmm...as far as I know, the only posing you'd do would be 'the keys on the board go up and down, up and down, up and down..;)

I know Python is a language, and that both Poser and Blender can use it. Past that, I have no idea how to tie it into stuff.

As for Midi, I've got Cakewalk (showing my age here)..wait, that's for real keyboards..;) Have a few of them too, but that's neither here nor there..;)

and I actually did model one of those 'mad scientist' multi-manual organs; works best at a distance, but it was fun (never got around to the foot manual, but bench keys, pipes, etc. It's in my gallery a year or two back...;)

But if anyone wants any of it, let me know..

Oh, come now. Multiple manuals, pedal board, draw stops, pistons, couplers, kick-swell...so much nice stuff to animate "up and down" as well as "back and forth." http://www.wanamakerorgan.com/stoplist.html Various parties have created within the Python language utilities to read a MIDI file. Ockham's script, operating within Poser, leverages some of these utilities to extract animation events from that file. Download his free calliope and try out the demonstration tune and you'll see how it works.

For those of you still looking for parts... There is a whistle by 3DStrike (I dunno if that is a site or screen name, I forgot). Good for drum majorettes. There is a shako type military hat at RDNA in the free stuff for M2. It will fit other characters and can be the basis for a bandsman hat. Add a plume to the front and there you go. The pants of the Tees and Tracks at DAZ are suitable for band pants. There is a stripe down the side. Add local color. There are quite a few jackets of military cut out there, so assembling a band uniform from different sources and parts is one avenue.

I should mention that the majorette is wearing the Ring Mistress outfit by PhilC with the RDNA shako on her head. The instruments shown in the image are referred to above.
