Subject: DDR RAM??????????

Clouseau uses a Power Mac G5 with 2 Gig of RAM at present and is wondering whether more RAM is the secret to quicker rendering. How much RAM do you other artists have? Chief Inspector Clouseau

If you're using a 32 bit operating system, then having more ram won't make a difference, 32bit systems can't address more than 2gigs of ram per application.  64bit systems can make use of more ram.

I just upgraded from 1GB to 4 GB - a lot faster. Of course the processor move from a single processor G4 (1 GB Ram) to a Mac Pro with two dual core processors (4 GB Ram) helps as well. Incredible fast renderings for me.

But seriously - it is a mixture of Ram and procvessor speed that makes it. And of course scene settings. Experience tells me that the faster you can render the higher render settings you will use - to come back to the waiting times you are used to.

One day your ship comes in - but you're at the airport.

Not being a student of computer studies Clouseau is not too sure if his system is 32 or 64bit. Can anyone enlighten him, with the information provided below, as to what size of operating system this is? Any advice as to what Clouseau should do to upgrade his computer RAM size will be appreciated. I am not a mac person, but the system you have is what is called a 'cusp' system.  It is near the change over point between 32 & 64 bit.  Now odds are it's a 32 bit system.  I think you have max'ed your RAM out, so there is little you can do to increase your speed.

As for Vue.  Processors, Processors, Processors.   I have a quad 2.6 GHz Xeon that I run Vue 5 on.  The system has 8 gigs of ram.  Vue flys through renders, but it's not the amount of RAM.  It helps, but rendering is all CPU cycles.  I have a Sony Laptop 3.3 GHz HT with 2 gigs of RAM.  The Quad blows it away at render time.

This has been my experience on the PC, but I will lay odds that it applies to the Mac as well.

Clouseau makes short animations for his work and needs the render time seriously speeded up. He finds that it takes him about 20 hours to render a 10 second animation with semi-low render settings. In your opinion, what should Cloueau do?
