Subject: question about installing poser 5

P.Winberg ( ) posted Mon, 30 October 2006 at 11:41 PM · edited Wed, 25 December 2024 at 12:42 PM

I was lucky enough to download the free poser 5 program when it was available...I have put off installing it as the task of re-installing all my poser 4 content is formidable...do I really have to uninstall and re-install as I am thinking or can I just install over poser 4??

Thanks

Pat

can I just move my runtime folder into poser 5 before I uninstall poser 4?

You do not have to uninstall at all unless youve some kind of upgrade only installation which I doubt.

If a win user, your current Poser 4 will be under C:/Program Files/Meta Creations/Poser 4 or C:/Program Files/Curious Labs/Poser 4 if you allowed your installer of P4 to go to its default location and depending upon when you purchased it.

Poser 5 will install to C:/Program Files/Curious Labs/Poser 5 by default, and you can have Poser 4, Poser 5 and Poser 6 subdirs all in your Curious Labs or Meta Creations subdir and they all work fine. You can only have one at a time launched however.

Once youve installed your P5, you can import your P4 runtime so you dont have to reinstall all your content.

hope this helps,

Logan

NOTE:  importing your existing runtime is NOT physically moving your P4 runtime directory. Dont delete or move any P4 files,  just launch your P5 installer, then post back if you cant find the import instructions in a forum search.

Sounds like you got it under control. Far out :)

Now that youre at the point of side by side working installs of Poser 4 and Poser 5, with Poser 4's Runtime imported to Poser 5 (effectively, you just "introduced" your P5 to your existing P4 Runtime and it will now follow the file tree to all needed .cr2's, .obj's, textures etc right where they normally reside in your P4 folders and read thier data from there, and implement in the P5 workspace)

Now there is a pretty necessary next step to employ if you are a user of Daz3D's head and/or body morphs for the millennium characters:

If you have installed any head/body morphs, you should have a !DAZ folder at

Poser 4RuntimeLibraries!DAZ

take this folder and copy (important that you copy not move this folder) it to the same location under P5:

Poser 5RuntimeLibraries!DAZ

The reason for this is that there are vital data files for the function of the morphs that cant seem to be read from an imported runtime, that !DAZ directory has to be under the "local" Runtime's library directory.

If you ever install any additional morph packs from DAZ (say you currently have M3 bodymorphs and you at a later time get the David head morphs, etc) make sure to get the new files added to the !DAZ folder copied over.

Hope this helps,

Logan
