I've used 7-Zip with quite a bit of success; it works with most any compression format, including RAR.

Doesn’t that one need a RAR plugin ?

Hmmm... I don't think so. It doesn't pack RAR's, just unpacks them, and I think the code is built-in.

You might also check out the links at the bottom of the RAR page at Wikipedia; there's some other software referenced there that might also be useful. 😄

Direct ftom the 7zip site:

The main features of 7-Zip:

  • High compression ratio in new 7z format with LZMA compression
  • Supported formats: - Packing / unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR
  • Unpacking only: RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB and NSIS

You DO NOT need to have WinRAR installed inorder to decompress a RAR file.

I have used 7zip for several years now.
