PJW productions has released a free update to DoggyFX, the video effect plugin for PD Pro.  DoggyFX is now at version 1.1

One new filter I find very interesting is the threshold filter which lets you select the channel to threshold, each channel can use a different threshold. Kinda gives the ability for creating a Andy Warhol poster effect, on animations!

it sounds like the alpha gain filter in quicktime video editor. I looked at the linked page, but I dunno what PD pro is.

what is Quicktime video editor, you mean Quicktime Pro or is there more?

hm, why would they call it alpha gain filter?

this one is simply   threshold filter, but instead of just making a pixel black or white, you can limit the effect to single channels, like the red channel, then the green or blue too, with different levels for the respective threshold. If you have that enabled on red, green and blue, you end up with just  about 8 possible colors. pretty neat ones too, depending on where you set the threashold in each channel, you might get some interesting looks, some of which to me are reminiscent of a Warhol poster. I know there's more to it, but...

FYI, PD Pro, aka Project Dogwaffle Professional is paint and animation program.

There's also a little cousin to PD Pro, called PD Artist, and a tiny little one (just painting, no animation) called PD Particles, great for making shrubbery and foliage with alpha channel mask generated automatically, Ready for use on billboard polygons (like the Xfrog billboards)

o.k., got it. alpha gain fades tracks in-n-out using their alpha channels (masks). that covers all three colour channels, however, in qt pro, which is a cheap video editor I use to do gifanimations. i'll check out pd pro, see if there's an OS X version.

alas there is no OSX version, but it does run on a MacIntel core-2 duo systems with either dual boot (boot camp) or with Parallels in which case you can use other windows CDs to boot into WIndows while MacOS is still running.

there are many types of animations that can be done however in PD Pro, from drawing frame by frame traditional animations (aka old-school anims) to using filters across the movies and animated brushes to compose more video over video, as well as post work over animations.

shows just a few examples

some start from next to nothing, e.g. apply a transformation to a still image to turn it into a movie clip, then add rain or lightning effects for more drama. Others started from Carrara renders or Bryce and more, and again did some magig with filters across the timeline.  Then there's also those who know how to draw and create an animated cartoon.

It's a bit different at that than, say, using a 2D animation system which is object oriented with bones and keyframes of the object's transforms and stuff, like Moho or FLash, it's a bit more like Flipbook I guess. But it does go further in the sense that while everything is based on rasters and sprites, you can load a sprite and even an animated sprite or avi or image sequence into the brush and then keyframe the path of the brush across the frames of your animation-to-be.
