Subject: V6I crashes on saving

thefixer ( ) posted Mon, 20 November 2006 at 3:14 PM · edited Sun, 02 February 2025 at 3:40 PM

Anyone else getting this?

Seems to happen when I have a waterfall from C3D in the scene but not every time, I can render the image [in the gallery, "coming through"] but when I try to save the file, Vue crashes so I lose the whole scene!

I have raised a ticket and I gave them the error log too!

Oh! I do have the update installed by the way!

Now I'm having this problem too.  I think I am going to un-install the whole thing and then re-install without the patch.  I was not having any problems before, but now it is crashing a bunch - once it starts, you can't save the file...  Not good.

On the same file, if I go into the atmoshpere editor, that also crashes the file.

Same thing is happening to me!!!!   I load up a file, it can render but when I try to save it it crashes.   Redid the scene was working fine but then it starts happening again!!!!   urrrggg.

Peggy_Walters ( ) posted Mon, 20 November 2006 at 11:36 PM

Re-install did not help with this file - still can't save it or touch the atmosphere editor.  Patch/no patch made no difference.  Guess the file is corrupted somehow.   Oh well, this was my contest entry for the Venice stuff at Cornucopia.  Did what I could with the file, but fed up with it crashing...

Exactly the same with me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    and it is my Venice entry!!!!!    must be a connection!

I am beginning to wonder if it is because the core code is base on the not yet released Vista and we are still running XP.  Has anyone tried running V6 on a Vista Beta?

Well I'm sorry to hear it's happening to you guys as well but at least it confirms that there is an issue there and not something peculiar to my set up, thanx for the replies!!

Have you all raised it with a ticket???

I hadn't heard that the core code was based on Vista, although some folks over at C3D have talked about running it on Vista.   Most folks are  running on XP-32.  I can only encourage you to send those scenes with a problem ticket to E-on support.

Meanwhile, have you tried to use your backup versions?  I've resorted to that more than once.

lingrif: The problem with sending the scene is that I can't actually save the scene at all, period! I build a scene, do a couple of preview renders, go to do a save and BANG, the whole thing crashes with a send to microsoft dialogue and that's it, scene gone, Vue gone!!!

I'm at the point where I'm actually scared to save something so I just work on it now, render the scene and then hope it saves after, if it doesn't, at least I have an image! [shrug].

What I can and have done is check the event log of XP and send that information in a text file to e-on with a ticket!
I had hoped the update would fix it and initially it seemed like it did but now it's as bad as before!

Don't get me wrong though, I'm not knocking the software and I know it's a pre-release but this sort of thing shouldn't be happening at this stage of software development, I mean saving your work has to be priority right!!!

I agree wholeheartedly.  I'm glad you sent the log - that should help.

It seems to me, the more you save the scene and do test renders a number of times, then, bang, it will no longer save anymore.  I was working on the problem files for about an hour before it started crashing.

I have also seen problems where it renders fine, then the next time you render, it comes out all black (at least it was very quick). The only way to get back to normal renders was to exit Vue and restart.  The it would render a few more times before going back to black.

I put in a support ticket too.  Thankfully, none of these files are critical work stuff - just playing around.

If have the same problems, and when I debug, each time I find the crash is due to a memory fault.  But, whether it is MS or Vue is uncertain.

thefixer ( ) posted Tue, 21 November 2006 at 8:26 AM

I agree Peggy, the latest scene to give me these problems was working fine, I'd even saved it a couple of times, then I went off Vue to do something else, opened up the same file, added a terrain I think it was and made some other adjustments, I think I may have deletd one of two waterfalls I had in the original image and that was it then, wouldn't save for love or money!

So I had to reload the original, make the changes, render and then just lose it all again!!
I really don't understand what is happening or how so I hope they have someone there that does!!  [lol].

It's not just a PC problem. I am running on a mac and experienced the same thing. I still dont know what happened but it would render and I could not save at all without crashing. Had to reload a previous saved file just to use it.

Well, I have worked out that it is only scene's with imported objects ( including VOB's) that are causing the problem for me.  The last two pics in my gallery were done in  Vue 6infinite, the second after I patched  it, and I can still reload, change and save them, no problem.   With any scene with an object in it I can keep on saving it but when I close Vue and open up the saved file later, it will load fine and render but will crash on trying to save it again.
BTW I was only able to do the mountain one because of the patch, it solved the problem of Vue crashing when displacement mapping was used!   Swings and roundabouts:)

Please, anyone having this problem log a support ticket over at e-on.  Let them know what objects you were using on problem files.  So far, I have only had this happen when I was using the Cornucopia items - don't know if they are the problem but it could well be.  Maybe the serial number transfer did not work as well as they thought.  Anyway - I'll keep poking it and see if I can get a small file to crash - can't e-mail them a 57 MB file!

Funny (not really) - I can save files with C3d items(I tried copy& non copy potected) & but trying to render diplacement crashes everytime - how bizarre

Edited - I can confirm opening a saved a scene & attempting to save back with the same name caused a crash ASAP. I get the same error log as when crashing when rendering with diplacement MSVCR80.dll and it is only with C3d items.

Edited again - I was using the corral from C3d

Just  tested a lot of stuff and have found I dont have problems saving and resaving with older  Cornucopia stuff loaded like the dilapidated barn or the old farmhouse but the Venice stuff is causing the problem everytime!!

Paula Sanders ( ) posted Tue, 21 November 2006 at 9:25 PM

I have been working with files all evening. I have been doing test renders and saving them. All have saved OK. I have not, however, used any imported objects. That might be the difference. The other day, I worked a while in the Win XP 64 bit, and it too worked fine. Again, I was not using outside materials.

Maybe this helps. I hope so.

I am trying to remember what I was doing at the time of my crashes and if I remember right everything was fine with importing various poser models until I loaded some RNDA conifer trees. Then I could render fine and move around in the scene all right but it would crash on saving everytime. I just had to reload a previous saved version without the trees to get the scene back. Dont know if that was what caused it or just some random weird corruption. Have to play around more i guess.

Peggy_Walters ( ) posted Wed, 22 November 2006 at 7:51 AM

I wonder if it is only Cornucopia items that I downloaded using the Vue6 serial numbers.  I made a really simple scene with just the stone wall kit and one of the doors (purchased last week).  Placed the door into a cube with a stone material with displacement and using a AO atmosphere.  Render, save, move around a bit, save, tweek, save, crash - now file crashes everytime I save.  The first crash did give me a memory error, but after that you only see the Vue had an error message box.

Now I need to try again, but this time with no displacement or AO atmosphere and see if I can crash it again.  If I can, then I will re-download the items using my Vue 5 serial number and transfer the items over to 6.  There has to be an answer to this!

I tried again today, this time with items I bought from Cornucopia but downloaded using my Vue 5 installation and transfered to Vue 6 (small house and wagon shed).   I was able to work on the scene, save it, open it, add more stuff, render, etc.  Used 2 eco-systems for a total of 22 million polygons - worked perfectly.

Will go back to the simple scene and try to pin-point what the problem is, but today was more just playing around - it was a lot more fun without all the crashes!

I have the same problem resaving files with C3d items (old farm, stave church and corduoan lighthouse) and sent a ticket to their support. They just emailed me back this reply:

*"We have fixed a similar problem in our internal version, about resaving a scene containing copy-protected cornucopia3D items. Next update should sort things out. Thank you for your report."

The new update hasn't been posted yet (as of this post!).

MSVCR80.dll,

Interesting, this file is a Microsoft C Runtime Library for the Microsoft 2005 Visual Studio.  Often this DLL is called by third party software.
