Subject: Problem with Hxn and Obj Files imported into Carrara Pro 5

Dapper-John ( ) posted Sun, 26 November 2006 at 5:00 AM · edited Sun, 04 August 2024 at 8:12 AM

Just a quicky

Has anyone come across this problem before? I'm in the process of modelling a house in Hexagon 2.1. Actually it started off in C5 Pro using Inagoni Architools, but I re-modelled completely in Hex using the origianl C5 model as nothing more than a template.

I wish to apply some realistic materials and render output via C5. Problem is 3DS and Amapi files import into C5 Pro - apparently OK. Hex files cause C5 to bring up an internal error and OBJ files seem to get some interesting cross facets on what appear to perfectly normal vertices.

Any ideas

Thanks inadvance

Hi,
I use Amapi D7 for modelling, but normal save the model as an obj before opening it in CARRARA. On the odd occasion, I have had Carrara refuse to open the model.
I then go back to amapi and save it in sections, adding a bit more of the model at a time untill the problem is found.
Any help?

ANGER. IS THE BEAST WITHIN.

You may have something there, however I will need to try it first. There are a lot of objects in my model which may be causing a *.hxn file not to load in C5 and the *.obj file to go wonky. I will get back to you at some point and see what I find

Regards

Ok, now were getting somewhere!

The *.Obj from Hex file does get confused, however it is easily fixed in C5's Vertex modeller. However I cannot explain how a Hex saved *.car file will not open in C5 Pro. As mentioned earlier, files saved as 3DS and Amapi files have not caused any problems when imported into C5 Pro.

has anyone else foud a problem between file transfer of a *.car file from Hexagon into Carrara?

Many Thanks to Zikeo

Hi Dapper John, I wish I could offer some insight on the .hxn -> .car issue. That is a bullet proof method for me. But so is the .obj export. So, if you're experiencing a problem object with the .obj export, do a Save-As with the Hexagon file and then delete that one object. Then try the .car export. If that works ok, then there is some "illegal" topography in the object in question as far as Carrara is concerned. I have occasionally created files that will consitently create problems for other 3d apps. It can usually be traced to a single object that I can re-make and have all the problems go away. Please keep us in the loop on this one. It's good to hear how exceptions are solved. Mark

Can you show a wire of your model in Hexagon?  Sometimes CAR exporting doesn't working with n-gons.  Also, orientate your normals so they are pointing outward.  Then export as OBJ.  Should work great then in Carrara.

Mark and Shonner

Thanks for your advice.

I still don't get this *.hxn to C5 problem. All Normals are facing the correct way. The message I get from C5 is this:-

“An unknown error occurred while executing Open…”

The screen shots below show the model in wire form. This object was constructed using 3D primitives, Vertex tools and Boolean. After every boolean and vertex construction I have welded the objects - to make them watertight.

Mark, the obj issue is relatively small and with this model easily put right. In C5, I deleted the two offending faces, used existing vertex points to construct new ones - job done. These two offending faces which were big enough to distort the model but when re-worked in C5 - no problem, minimum fuss and effort.

Wireframe Shot attached

Thanks

I see polygons that are more than 4-sided.  Making them 4-sided throughout your model will decrease the odd triangulated shading Carrara generates.

I see what your saying. That would explain the wonky obj geometry or should I say the odd triangulated shading that I fixed in C5.

In your opinion, would this be the explanation for the hex file not loading in C5?

Possibly. I don't completely think like Carrara! :D Mark

Thanks Guys.

Advice taken. I can finish this off now - i'll stick to obj format for now and if I come across this Hex to C5 problem again i'll let you know.

All the best

Dapper.
