Subject: Poser 6 - Runtime 4 problem

Tiari ( ) posted Sun, 26 November 2006 at 2:52 PM · edited Fri, 04 October 2024 at 5:31 PM

I'm running poser 6, and up until recently I havent had any issues.  Starting about two weeks ago (I havent added any content at all) there is a huge drag delay in pulling up the poser 4 runtime folder as well as big delays and drag trying to load anything from it.

I am also having a lot of OBJ not found errors on things in the poser 4 files (and lost texture maps, bums) that had worked absolutely fine before.

Any clues what the problem could be?

If you're using your P4 Runtime as an external Runtime you have to remember that all of the P4 content went into one Runtime.  Also, if you've moved it recently, it won't remember where all the files are because the P4 Runtime used absolute path references rather than relative path references.

My suggestion is to alway use any previous version Runtimes as an external and just leave them where they are.  I still have P4 and P5 installed for that precise reason, with the exception of the P5 runtime which is empty because P5 allowed for external runtime folders.  My P4 runtime is still in the original location so that, if I need it, everything is where the program expects it to be.

P4's runtime is still in the same place, and p4 is still on my comp exactly where it was.  None of the files have been moved, so I can't figure out whats the slow down.

Are you trying to load P6 with the P4 Runtime attached?  If it's very full that will take a while when you start P6?  Or is it just loading the P4 Runtime?  When is the last time the drive was defragmented?  Sometimes a badly fragmented drive will cause some problems.

Does P4 still load and run properly?

If not, you may be running into a disk problem (back up ASAP if so)...

ahhh......... thanks for the help guys, found the culprit.  Though i did everything obvious, I hadn't run a scan disk in eons (used to 98 not xp, scandisk isnt obvious anymore)   After it running for two and a half hours and fixing errors, all works good!

Tiari, if scandisk helped that much, then it's a sign that the disk is due for replacement...
If you're getting that many bad sectors, then there's a serious problem with the disk, and it won't get better, only worse, and probably exponentailly...

Get a new disk as soon as you can and copy the data onto the new one.

You'll curse yourself if you don't! You can always keep the old disk and use it for "temporary" stuff, until it finally gives up the ghost..:-)

Cheers,
Diolma
