Subject: Why do I always find the chat room empty?

Why do I always find the chat room empty?

(Except for No Whisper, who I presume is the chat room's caretaker:-) )

TerraDreamer ( ) posted Sun, 26 November 2006 at 5:21 PM

Well, that to me indicates a lack of popularity.

We are going to be doing some cool things with chat in the coming year as well as getting a new chat format so it will liven up I'm sure.

zollster ( ) posted Sun, 26 November 2006 at 6:30 PM

artzone chat has loads of ppl in it.... renderotica chat usually quite a few ppl in it

StaceyG ( ) posted Sun, 26 November 2006 at 6:33 PM

As I stated, we are going to be focusing on our chatroom this year so stay tuned..........

zollster ( ) posted Sun, 26 November 2006 at 6:35 PM

"Subject: Why do I always find the chat room empty?"

For the same reason that when you go into a Barnes and Noble you see people either buying books, considering books to buy, or browsing the shelves; even though there's a cafe there, it's relatively empty, 'cause people aren't there just to hang out. ;)

Art Zone is different, because it's more like the My Space of the Dazniverse - it's more specifically designed around supplying a "hangout" atmosphere.

Hyria ( ) posted Sun, 26 November 2006 at 7:58 PM

I usually hang around the chat room in the evening. Although like many others once outside work reels it's ugly head...more work hours mean less hang out hours :(

I'm sure it is the same with some others. It pretty much hit and miss lately O.O

I tried the chat room here, and it was never empty, but there were often several names in the list who didn't say anything, apparently because they were also logged into more popular chat rooms, including those mentioned above. I quit using it after getting too many creepy whispers from young boys - I daresay I felt like a cradle-robber at times

hopefully dumping the hideously inefficent 'java' or 'php' based chat and using a simple easy IRC server I hope... (anyone that tells you that the webbased approach is best is an idiot, plain and simple and does not know chat systems)

Acadia ( ) posted Mon, 27 November 2006 at 8:22 PM

I've been in the chat room a few times. Mostly last year.  There were some people in there back then but because I didn't know most of them I felt "out of the loop" for the most part.  I tried going there a few times this year but while there were names showing, no one was actively "typing."

I'm not really big on chat rooms. I don't mind going into one occasionally, but I'm not one to hang out in them.  I find them too fast moving and I can't keep up.

I seem to remember that in former times the chat room had a control thet let a user make a public anouncement on Renderosity asking people to come to the chat room.

JenX ( ) posted Tue, 28 November 2006 at 8:23 AM

I also remember a lot of people abusing it, even before I came on staff.

There's nothing like checking out the gallery when you get a chat announcement announcing that "dave eats ballz".

Ya I remember the shout abuse lol. Usually we blame the "non-activeness" of the lurkers on the added flavors they put in their coffee ;)

:P

CrimsonDesire ( ) posted Fri, 01 December 2006 at 11:17 AM

Never been.  On a completly unrelated note, AA just wanted to thankyou for the many incredible freebies you've put out for everyone to enjoy sir.

DarkStarBurning ( ) posted Sun, 03 December 2006 at 2:47 PM

Chat used to be chokka, some nights you literally couldn't get in cos you'd crash the entire thing ( once it hit the mid-twenties mark if I remember rightly ). Then it became policed and practically died overnight.

Shame really shrugs

StaceyG ( ) posted Sun, 03 December 2006 at 5:13 PM

Just as other chatrooms are monitored, our new chatroom once it gets implemented will be monitored as well.

Belladzines ( ) posted Mon, 04 December 2006 at 4:58 PM

if your trying to access the chatroom via when your at work..... most firewalls wont allow you access.... so hence maybe the emptiness?

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Mon, 04 December 2006 at 8:15 PM

p.s. angel useta be the "chat room mum" - is she still on duty there?

StaceyG ( ) posted Mon, 04 December 2006 at 8:26 PM

She has had to take some time off due to health reasons so she isn't a part of the team at the present but we hope she will be able to return soon.

Belladzines ( ) posted Mon, 04 December 2006 at 8:35 PM

lets hope she makes a speedy recovery!! and send her well wishes ...

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Mon, 04 December 2006 at 9:30 PM

best wishes on a good recovery! she's the perfect one to be in the chat room. very patient and understanding with all our shenanigans.

vikinglady ( ) posted Tue, 05 December 2006 at 1:00 PM

Please add my Best Wishes the next time you talk to her or the family.
She is missed.

I sure will pass on all your kind thoughts whenever I communicate with Angel or her family.

drifterlee ( ) posted Tue, 05 December 2006 at 1:23 PM

I didn't know there was a chat room, maybe that's why, LOL!

StaceyG ( ) posted Tue, 05 December 2006 at 1:42 PM

LOL @ drifterlee.. Well you will know it for sure once we get the new stuff going as there will be a lot happening in there!!

drifterlee ( ) posted Tue, 05 December 2006 at 1:53 PM

This is OT, but I had an adult friend who raved about the chat rooms at AOL. I had a trial AOL sub, and I did not find one intelligent chat room. It was all folks looking for dates, or kiddy hackers. Needless to say I never bothered after that.

StaceyG ( ) posted Tue, 05 December 2006 at 2:03 PM

I understand drifter. This is one of the reasons we began to moderate the chat because we would get multiple complaints a day regarding members trying to go to the chat to get help or discuss art related things and it would be nothing going on but the type of behavior you are describing above as well as some offensive language, topics, etc:(
