Subject: Stahlratte has been banned.

dphoadley ( ) posted Mon, 04 December 2006 at 9:38 PM · edited Tue, 19 November 2024 at 12:31 PM

To all and sundry;
This morning, in a personal message, Jean Paul (Stahlratte) informed me that he has been permanently banned from Renderosity, and that his gallery has also been pulled.
Those wishing to still download his Girl 3 please send me an email to dph@013.net.il, and I'll see what  can do.
Yours truly,

One would hope that there was some even-handedness with the bannings, because if he deserved that, then so did a few others.

I can't imagine getting banned if he used the Girl. She's a cartoon-like character.

jonthecelt ( ) posted Mon, 04 December 2006 at 9:53 PM

Having just gone through and read the whole thread beginning to end, I agree, pjz99... what concerns me more is that there was another thread informing us of this, from another of stahlratte's friends... it also stated that stahlratte requested that GIRL3 be removed from all people hard drives apart from the two commercial licenses he had granted (sorry, dphoadley...). That post was removed very soon after it was originally posted. I dont' know who removed it, or why, but if the request there was genuine, then it needs to be brought to people's attention again.

Yep. This is a big ugly mess, and I have no clue what's going on at all with it.

Drat! ;)

Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.

I thought I was seeing things... So I guess I wasn't the only one to see that.  It was odd that the poster only had one post though.  (not like I'm one to talk regarding low post counts)

dphoadley ( ) posted Mon, 04 December 2006 at 10:07 PM

He didn't ask me to request that the girl be removed, only that he wish the word spread for those still wishing to download her.

He didn't say.  Next they'll want to ban Dr. Geep for some esoteric reason.

It's a private forum, they are under no obligation to post their actions or reasons. Technically it's none of our business. While I don't know what the reasons where, I can only guess (based on what I have read lately) it wasn't on a whim.

they'll probly delete this thread, or lock it. I ignored the "girl 3" controversy, as I guessed it was related to "girl" (the 3D model based on the cartoon character by dany). I like dany's artwork, but the model is grotesque IMVHO.

if he was banned for breaking the tos then the mods have no responsability to tell us. we should all know about the tos. it would be nice to know why he was banned of course, if only to stop another mod witch hunt but people will form their own opinions despite not knowing why.

i have a question..is it legal to cross one copyrited body with another and give the mesh  away as a freebie. just asking cos i don't know.

Maxfield ( ) posted Mon, 04 December 2006 at 11:26 PM

billy423uk

It's probably not legal to give away a modified mesh, even as a freebie. You could look into the possibility of encoding the mesh with Objaction Mover, and using the copyrighted mesh as a key. That way, people who own the original mesh can use your modified one, but it's useless to people who don't have the original.

It is generally poor moderator etiquette to share such information, and I'm surprised this thread is itself allowed to remain open, I'd have locked it straight away.  It's really nobody's business but the person in question.

Generally not, unless the copyright holder grants you explicit permission to do so.  This prevents people from using 99.99% of one copyrighted item and adding .01% of their own contribution, and calling that an original product.

dphoadley ( ) posted Mon, 04 December 2006 at 11:41 PM · edited Mon, 04 December 2006 at 11:44 PM

The Girl 3 figure was RTE encoded to both Aiko and The Girl, so whoever downloaded his file needed to already own both copyrighted figures in order to decode it.  So what possible copyright violation could there be here?
As far as the reasons of his banning being privilaged information, that might be true for run of the mill members; but Stahlratte wasn't just ANYBODY, he was STAHLRATTE!  If someone of his stature can be subject to such extreme sanction, then G-d have mercy on the rest of us.

Yes, but he is such a generous, warm hearted, and all together fine fellow; that for this to happen to him is heart rending!  May G-d forbid, but I feel like I've lost a close family member.

Ok, We've been through this before..lets please not do it again. You guys/gals know we do not discuss the specifics of decisions concerning members and staff with anyone other than the member concerned.

If Stahlratte has questions, he is most welcome to email admin@renderosity.com to discuss it with the admins.

As far as the membership on a whole, yes, all members are treated equally...there are no special ones, if they cross the line of TOS they all get the same treatment. If I myself crossed the line, I could get my tail thrown out too {even with a nic like Evil Sith Queen} just so's ya know 😉

It is probably not the right place to diskuss that, and as you say, the admins do not make their reasons public. Just my few cents.

Someone who is banned here can return with a different nickname easily. The removed gallery and any freestuff removed by the banned hurt the community.

I found Stahlratte's posting with the size comparisons well researched and helpfull. He was not very polite, true, but ban him?

It's not my site, make the rules however you like.

It's a shame, a friendly, helpfull and talented member of this community is gone. Who will take over his part to crate hybrid figures like Girl 3 among others?

Sorry Stahl, I'll miss you.

Oh, well. And... if WE have questions? It's your site and supposely you can ban everyone who break the TOS... but I think it's different to ban an unknown fellah who joined yesterday than to ban a respectable member of a lot of years, a lot of helping threads and posts, a lot of PREVIOUS CHARACTERS which never created any kind of trouble

Of course, you can say this is a private discussion between Stahl and you. But over all for people (me) who was not here in the middle of the situation that banned him, you would give us a lil'bit of information

Or perhaps you need to delete definitively the word 'COMMUNITY' from Rosity's header

Forget my english

This is really SAD!
I don't know the reason but if it was the "larger then life thread" than this is even more SAD I've read more offending  post here and still  people  never  got banned...
Stahl has helped me many times in many of my projects and he is a very polite serious and perfectionist!
As for Girl3 I am sure he would never release and uncoded obj!!!

Things like that make me want to visit this forum less and less...

why do you need a lil information? and why is it different? are respectable people above the tos of certain sites? i don't know why he was banned...but giving away freebies and being an all round nice guy doesn't give anyone (or shouldn't) immunity from breaking the tos or being banned when they do after said number of warning or when warrented. making it the same for everyone is part of what makes it a community. disscussing why they banned him would make the mods and admin look very shallow and callous indeed.  seems as soon as someone is banned here we're all too quick say how and why the mods messed up. obviously the guy was well liked and he was kind enough to share his stuff with others. it's always sad for a community to lose someone like that but lets not start casting stones unless we have something to throw at.

billy423uk ( ) posted Tue, 05 December 2006 at 1:53 AM

my apologies. i was just asking a question. its obvious i would think that he didn't break any rules with his mesh because he double encoded them. he mentioned this himself. i in no way meant for people to think this was the reason he got banned.
no pakled we don't know why he was banned. maybe he deserved it. maybe he didn't.  i'd be of an opinion he did something that deserved the ban him being such a large entity in the community. if that is the case then he has no one to blame but himself.

Cas, first off nobody has been banned right after becoming a new member here{unless they did something that is zero tolerance here}...not in the years I have been here...and second, as I said earlier, everyone is treated the same...new members, and members who have been here since the beginning...as long as they stay within the TOS they will have no problems.

Quote - But over all for people (me) who was not here in the middle of the situation that banned him, you would give us a lil'bit of information

Again, we do not discuss issues with anyone else but the concerned parties..and this means that it is an issue between the Rendo Admins and the banned member...no-one else.

Thirdly, the word 'community' does not mean we are supposed to divulge private information that is best kept between members and staff.

As I said before, we have been through this many times in the past, lets not let this thread turn into one that needs a lock down.

How many threads wrote Stahl? How many people helped him? What does a group of people in Internet community, the name the administrators put in the header or the feeling you have with the other people?

Take in mind: if Stahl broke the TOS, he must be banned. Like you, like me. But I WANT TO KNOW HOW HE BROKE THE TOS. Because I can't imagine a fellow more far away of breaking TOS than him. So I want to know it, because I want to avoid for me a similar situation... and WTF, because mods aren't obly to give explanations about bannings, but if they does it like now, who is the next? Me? Acadia? Andi3D? Stonemason?

Just out of curiousity, suppose the concerned party subsequent to the banning asked that the Rendo Admins provide to the other members a statement regarding their rationale for the ban?

Would you do that?

If not, then one is forced to consider the fairness of a situation where one party refuses to explain their decisions even when the other party waives their right to keep it private.

Oh, wait, here's one.  Suppose the banned party requests that someone else on the forum answer the question on banning.  Again, waiving that right.  What about that?

The problem for you guys is that if you insist on keeping it quiet even if the other guy doesn't want to, people will always suspect you of purely arbitrary decisions.

Jumpstartme2 ( ) posted Tue, 05 December 2006 at 2:18 AM

Okies, final time Cas, again this issue between the banned member and staff will not be discussed with you, or any other member. If you want to avoid being in a similar situation, all you, or anyone else have to do, is abide by the TOS you agreed to when you joined this site.

We do not ban on a whim, we do not ban on a first offense {again, unless its a zero tolerance offense like warez and so on.} Members are given several chances before we go to the drastic event of a banning..banning is a last resort, and something we absolutely do not like having to do.

Just this. I think this is a place not only for funny jokes, contest announces, rendering questions... this also is a place where you know people from all over the world, where you share your Poser tips, but also OT matters, where people talk about their family, troubles, fears, happiness... and you ban a well-known and beloved member and we might satisfied with a simple excuse of 'private matters between a member and us'

It really is not your business (or mine for that matter).  The great majority of moderated discussion forums are run like that, it's just a bad practice to give details in a banning situation.

Guys, you know we don't ban without repeated warnings. You also know we don't discuss members details with other members. That would be extremely unprofessional, unethical and completely unfair to the member - who after all in incapable of responding.

However I will say that this particular case has nothing to do with copyright issues, just to set your minds at rest, those of you who were concerned about that.
