Subject: What if you find that you prefer V3 to V4?

PXP ( ) posted Thu, 07 December 2006 at 5:52 PM · edited Sat, 23 November 2024 at 10:53 AM

Thought for the Day!

As I recall when SP3 was about to be launched there was so much talk and hype about it, a lot of people said SP3 is going to be really different with a whole set of improved morphs which will be a lot better than V3. Well SP3 came out and yes its a good character but did it become the amazing success story that V3 is? I don't think so.
A lot of people cant wait for V4 so what happens when we buy it and we discover that ole faithful V3 is still the winner and has that something that V4 doesn't . V3 might not be perfect but don't be surprised if you find that your still in love with V3.

I'll still be using V3 for a long time to come, but V4 is such a huge leap forward from V3 I can't imagine liking V3 better. Coldrake

Even if V4 ends up not being impressively better than V3, I imagine by the time people realize it there will be so many things for V4 that the tidal wave of content will have gained enough momentum that we'll continue to be deluged with V4 content, because she's "the next big thing".

And DAZ will likely aid this by churning out, and encouraging the merchants who sell there and PoserPros, more V4 stuff than V3, slowly attempting to wean the Poser population off of V3.

I looked at the plat club previews and looks like I'll be saving alot of money.  Wasn't impressed with it at all from the base model or any of the vendor previews.  Looks like a bad aiko head, well aiko is bad anyways but i digress, on a smaller v/sp frame.

zarquen ( ) posted Fri, 08 December 2006 at 4:16 AM

I DO prefer V3. Why? Because I've spent so many bucks on clothes for her; the character I use are based on V3 and I don't want to start again from scratch. No, I won't buy her.

With V4 in scene, there won't be no more stuff for V3... I've give up to navigate in RDNA store because now all the stuff is for that apollo-maximus guy, miki, etc. I don't owe them and they're so expensive... what will happen? DAZ' store will focus on new V4 and I'll give up DAZ... and maybe poser.

Sounds sad, but I feel it's what is gonna happen.

Dismissive comments aside, first you HAVE to buy it in order to find disappointment in it, so your logic is flawed...

To the OP, just think of where V2, and M2 are at, and you'll have your answer.

Thanks to the NDA testers have to sign you'll have to wait till she's released to hear from them whether she's actually better than V3, I'd give it a couple of weeks from release day before buying so the early adopters can put her through her paces & show off all the wonderful new bits. So far she's not looking that spectacular to me, apart from the Emma character/texture which looks really good & almost worth buying V4 for alone.

I wonder if we can make V4 look older? To me she looks a little "teenie-bopposh" in her default state. I love V3 because of the ability to age her and to give her different body types. I guess we'll know the answers to many questions upon her release and when folks have a chance to put her through the paces. It's very hard to know anything when the figure is not available yet.

EnglishBob ( ) posted Fri, 08 December 2006 at 9:50 AM

V3 swept the board when she came out, and I suspect V4 will follow the same pattern. Lots of people got V3 because she was the latest thing from DAZ, so there was more support for her, so more people got her, and so it went on. I was happy with Stephanie 1 and Vicki 1 (remember them?), but I bought V3 (remember having to pay for V3?) because she had more clothes available. Today the situation is different for me. If I need clothes for a poorly supported figure, I can use Wardrobe Wizard or make my own. If the figure doesn't bend perfectly then I'll postwork the image to fix it. I'll pick the figure who fits the appearance I want. I'm already out of love with V3. I don't need V4, which isn't to say I won't get her; but it might be for practical reasons, such as wanting to make clothing for her.

XENOPHONZ ( ) posted Fri, 08 December 2006 at 10:28 AM

I won't anticipate the negative in advance.  "Hey, Mom.....should we try that new menu item over at our favorite restaurant?  We might not like the way that it tastes."

I won't know whether or not I'll like something until after I've had a chance to try it out.  Speculation over "what if I don't like it?" doesn't accomplish a whole lot in advance.

But in this case: I suspect that I'll like it very much.  I also strongly suspect that -- apart from the occasional forum sniper -- the majority of Poser users will like it very much, too.  No doubt: to the great unhappiness of some.

XENOPHONZ now you know darn well that no matter how wonderful something is there will always be that one that has to pick it apart to make themselves happy....if that is possible for that type of person. This is the same person that would complain if you hung them with a new rope..LOL!

Bottom line we don't know a thing until we get to use V4. As I have mentioned before each version of Vicky that has come has had something better and new in the character. I see not difference in this I think she'll be just as awesome and I can't wait to find out what she has to offer. I imagine we will be able to make her to be anything we like.

Well I have had a look at the shots of V4 in the DAZ3D forum and I can't judge her at all from these renders but facially she doesn't seem to have that 'something special ' but lets wait and see. Who knows someone will probably put V3's head on V4!!! Its a crazy world.

I certainly can't afford it, and V3 works fine for me (as does V1RR, Maya, Dina, Aiko3, et al..wait, I don't have an Al..;)

Daz Store has a mysterious "Back SOON" sign up at the moment so it's possible they're launching her today.

Re the new head:
Someone speculated that the "Aiko realistic" vibe in V4's default appearance is based on the (unsubstantiated) fact that A3 has started outstripping V3 in popularity at DAZ. Anybody heard statistics that might support that claim? Perhaps V3 was already losing ground...

My first stop in the product page will be the morph pop-ups I think.

Cheers

XENOPHONZ ( ) posted Fri, 08 December 2006 at 11:39 AM

While A3 is admittedly pretty popular, I've seen nothing to convince me that she's outselling V3.  But I would say that A3 has come up.

I think that DAZ has gauged the timing on the release of V4 just right........a year ago would have been too early.

And if they're smart (which I know that they are), they'll already have the preliminary ideas for V5 brewing back in the kitchen.  Businesses make a big mistake if they get too comfortable and start to rest on their laurels.

I'd say that a good ballpark gauge of selling & popularity would be the number of products released in support of a given figure.  The products -- and the merchants who make those products -- tend to go where the money is.

"Better" is a subjective term. Better at bending the shoulders? Less of a computer resource hog? Prettier for young - or old - characters? More variety in morphs? There is no such thing as absolute "better." There is only "better at..." And there is no Dana. There is only Zuul.

PXP to Bobasaur. Thanks for joining this thread. You obviously didn't read exactly what I said. I was making a reference to what people at the launch of SP3 were saying about SP3 having better morphs so you see I did qualify "Better.." and is was not subjective.

Bobasaur ( ) posted Fri, 08 December 2006 at 1:51 PM

I think I latched onto your second paragraph, which appeared more general. Also, as I was answering this I was reliving all of the "is this character (or software) better than this one" threads I've read over the years. They're often very general - as if 'better' had a universal, objective definition. Your post acted as a trigger and I reacted. Your main point, about finding that you like some aspect of an older character more than you like it in the newest character, is very valid and it's a good thing to remind people of that sometimes. Over the years here I've observed the hype-hype-hype-build up unrealistic expectations-product release-disillusionment-anger cycle many times. It sounds like you have too. A bit of balance and perspective (as you basically suggest) goes a long way in keeping a hobby fun.

Omadar ( ) posted Sat, 09 December 2006 at 4:05 AM

I think your post is rather ominous...

I purchased V4 and prefer V3 ten-fold.

Daz dropped the ball on V4 big-time. She doesn't have nearly the same amount of morphs as V3 did at launch, no way to scale specific body-parts, no phoneme morphs...etc.

Her morphs are organized a bit better and 'yes' her joints bend better, but V4 is hardly what I expected from a Daz character...In fact, they should have called her something other than Victoria...maybe 'Becky Beta' as she appears to have been launched way too early.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you see a very negative reaction from the community in the coming days…

stormchaser ( ) posted Sat, 09 December 2006 at 4:19 AM

I feel the same, very disappointed with V4, V3 still wins it for me. I hope with the extra morphs which are to be released (should have been included in the morphs pack, aarrgghh) & further play I'll begin to like her more, but for now it's a NO!

click ( ) posted Sat, 09 December 2006 at 4:28 AM

I am glad that there are already some stuff fo V3 that I can use in V4. I just notice that 3Dream has made a free update for some of his hair products.
This is very COOL and usefull.

bigjobbie ( ) posted Sat, 09 December 2006 at 5:45 AM

What are the "missing" morphs?

The only similar posting about this I've sen was about monster-style morphs - aliens and zombies etc - but Garee and GoB both said that the morph makers were holding off til release because the V4 Mesh needed to be fully and totally finalised before they'd touch it because one tweaked vertex could destroy months of work. This affects Clothing and Texture makers less than morph-makers apparently.

So, there will be morph packs coming, but now's the time to spell out what morphs you want to see rather than sit on your hands waiting to see if they'll out-do V3 without your input.

Cheers

stormchaser ( ) posted Sat, 09 December 2006 at 6:08 AM

bigjobbie - We've spoken about this in other posts. We need the specific muscle group morphs that V3 had (deltoids, obliques, triceps, abductors etc), plus the ethnic head morphs. These will hopefully be released soon.

Omadar ( ) posted Sat, 09 December 2006 at 6:13 AM · edited Sat, 09 December 2006 at 6:18 AM

Bigjobbie,

V3 launched with an entire range of muscular, ethnicity morphs and phonemes. This wasn't an add-on: it was included with her launch Morph packs. V4 has none of these in her morph pack.

Further, V3 seems to be missing a number of nose, lip and eye morphs. (I.e. there is no LipUpRound on V4: this allowed a user to adjust the shape of the Philtrum, or ‘white roll’ area of the lip). Also, why can’t we scale body parts in V4? The ability to scale various parts in (x,y,z) has been disabled…this makes NO sense.

If a company is going to give a product a new version number (i.e. V4), the new product should, at the very least, have the same features as it predecessor: a new version should not have features removed. This is not the case with V4 and it’s a let-down.

Imagine if Poser 7 launched without the ability to render…you'd have a number of very upset users.

Gongyla ( ) posted Sat, 09 December 2006 at 6:14 AM

She's out. Real cheap. But you need the morphs pack to fulfill basic needs. But the morphpack does not include the muscle morphs, so you have to get those separately. And then there are the phoneme morphs. Of course you get her cheap/for free. Once you have her, you'll buy.

bigjobbie ( ) posted Sat, 09 December 2006 at 6:29 AM

Ah, okay - so the basic-basic stuff. Be interesting to see if these have been left out so they can do more separate packs like the African Girl - though someone did a nice Asian Girl using the included morphs in the Daz forum.

The X,Y,Z disabling is a worry - I mess around with them all the time. Perhaps it screws with the new morph-forms settings?

Are you guys getting P7? That fancy new version of morph putty (whatever it's called) might help with philtum-tweaks and the like...if it works.

A dedicated thread to all this would be a good idea, then you can post the finalised list at DAZ (edit out all the abuse first, heheh). At the very least an independent morph maker could have a shot at them.

Cheers

Omadar ( ) posted Sat, 09 December 2006 at 6:58 AM

Bigjobbie,

Yeah it's a bit of a drag...

When V3 came out there was so much you could do with her out of the box, but the lack of these features in V4 is limiting.

I was looking forward to doing some customizations with her this week-end, but guess I'll wait and see what Daz has to say about these issues.

Gazukull ( ) posted Sat, 09 December 2006 at 7:35 AM

While I think many of the features of V3 that missing are kind of a drag, the added features of V4 are fantastic.  Full face morphs, moving the eyes adjust the eyelids as well!  The addition of the fitness full body morph is like having the "heroic" morph from V1/2 back all over again.  That being said, I probably won't be using her until a wardrobe is done, but she is a sweet figure.  -G
