Subject: Dynamic clothes package for freebie?

gaz170170 ( ) posted Tue, 19 December 2006 at 12:35 PM · edited Thu, 09 January 2025 at 11:45 PM

Here`s where I am up to: I have designed a simple skirt dynamic prop for V4. I have clothified it, pinned the constrained group, applied a material type to it and ran it through several simulations with no problem. I have added the dynamic skirt to a folder in my Props library.

Now, if I want to distribute it as a freebie, how do I need to package it? What files/folders are required? In the skirts`s folder in the props library I have a .pp2 and a .png. Soon I will have textures and possibly bump and transparency maps in their own folder in the texture library.

If anyone can help, I`d be very grateful. I can email the necessary files to anyone who wants to try the skirt out.

Thanks in advance

They go in the same structure as the runtime folder inside your poser folder

Runtimegeometries    (.obj files)
Runtimetextures           (.bum, .jpg files)
RuntimeLibrariesposes       (.pz2 and .png files)
RuntimeLibrariesProps        (.pp2 and .png files)

Oh, and don't forget a readme file that gives your email contact incase of difficulty, as well as any terms of use such as if it can be used only for personal use, or if it can be used for commercial use. Also indicate if you are allowing the file to be redistributed, or if it can't be.

Hope that helps  :)

You might want to extract the OBJ geometry either manually (from the uncompressed PP2 file, using text editor), or by using third-party commercial utility software.  JCH Digital website has a tutorial on how to extract the OBJ, but I think there could be a semi-colon amiss somewhere in the instructions.  Put the OBJ under a suitable sub-folder under Geometries, and have the slimmed-down PP2 file refer to that external geometry.

...and it would help to give the readme a unique name!
(for those of us who repeatedly extract without paying attention, inadvertantly overwriting previous readme files..... 😊 )

Lol, good idea Redhawk

Redhawk beat me to the punch...

90% of the readme's I've been given has gone the way of getting overwritten because the distributor couldn't bother to name them uniquely.

Don't just name it uniquely, name it appropriately.

I suggest:

yourname_packagename_readme.txt

(or .html or .pdf)

That will make it instantly findable.
'yourname' should also be the name of the folder in geometries and textures - thus adding a further connectability:

Runtimegeometriesyourname (.obj files)
Runtimetexturesyourname (.bum, .jpg files)
RuntimeLibrariesposes (.pz2 and .png files)
RuntimeLibrariesProps (.pp2 and .png files)

If I remember, I rename individual items to add 'artistname' at the beginning:

'yourname_coolskirt.pp2'

  • I recommend putting yourname in there to begin with, so people will know when they use the item who made it.

Further sorting is by preference.
I sort my items in props and figure by the model they go to, but others do it differently. However, as long as I'm on a path:

RuntimeLibrariesposesV4MAT_clothing (.pz2 and .png files)
RuntimeLibrariesposesV4Poses (.pz2 and .png files)
RuntimeLibrariesPropsV4dynamic (.pp2 and .png files)
RuntimeLibrariesCharactersV4bottoms (.pp2 and .png files)
RuntimeLibrariesCharactersV4tops (.pp2 and .png files)

etc...

By the way, I made a post like this in 1999 or 2000. Nobody paid attention to me then, I suspect nobody will now, and I will keep overwriting readmes and forgetting who made what...

Wow, thanks for that Arcady, I`ll follow your advice.

I`ll update further once I get the MATs done

All my ''s got cropped from that post, but I'm assuming you can guess where they were supposed to be... :)

No problem, I thought that was the case, and thanks again
