Subject: Thumbnails in freebies

EPhi ( ) posted Sat, 30 December 2006 at 4:55 AM · edited Thu, 26 December 2024 at 1:59 PM

I already emailed to admin@renderosity.com but then I realized that this is, maybe, a better place to ask my question. I'm one of the many members who think that thumbnails should be mandatory in the freestuff area. So when I posted my first freebie yesterday (published as: "Conforming V4 bodice" Friday December 29, 1:50 pm) I sent a link to the .jpg intended to be the thumbnail; but, oh surprise, the freebie appears without the thumbnail ("no thumbnail was supplied"!?). What's the problem? I'm using a hosting service (savefile.com), not a website, I have seen that many other use this solution (with this same provider). This yields links to download the files (.zip for the stuff and .jpg for the thumbnail) so I imagine that somebody has to download and then upload the thumbnail, so if the procedure is automatic there can be a problem, is this the reason?
Anyway how can we/I fix the issue?
Btw why is it not possible to upload the thumbnail for freebies "directly", as we do for images?
Thanks in advance,
EPhi

Hi there,
Renderosity does not host thumbnails for freestuff.
You need to supply a link to a thumbnail.
SaveFile does not allow remote loading of images, which is why your thumbnail didn't display and was removed.

Hope this helps.

"Hope this helps"
yes and no (anyway thanks for the quick answer).
The problem is that many FREE  hosting-files sites or web sites do not allow "remote loading of images" (if I understand what it is, but I'm not sure...). Maybe you have some suggestion of a free place where I could post my thumbnail?
Thanks again.

Check with your ISP. Often you get a small amount of webspace with your internet account, it's possible you could use that.
Alternatively you're looking at something like imageshack.us or maybe photobasket.com (not sure if they allow direct though.)

Thanks!
after a little search for "image hosting" I have found Photobucket.com (Photobasket.com does no more exist) and succeeded in fixing the question. By the way I continue to not really understand why Renderosity doesn't host the thumbnails for freestuff (after all they are images like those we upload in the galleries and they are even smaller!). I understand for the zip files which can be quite large, but why not for thumbnail (maybe as an option when uploading images). Such a possibility would give the freestuff area a much cleaner presentation.

Ephi, I recently uploaded a freebie. I don't have a webspace of my own, (not one I can use for personal stuff that is) so I don't have anywhere too put up a thumbnail image to link too.

I am sure that I'm not the only one thats run into that problem.

Just some food for thought.
