Subject: Where to Ask DS ---> Bryce Questions?

I have some questions involving Daz Studio transfers to Bryce. Where shoud I ask them?

For example, a lot of hair that looks good in DS renders as grey in Bryce.

Someone with the answer should be along...  I get all my stuff in DS into Bryce with texture...  there must be a function not abled...

Bryce is now 6 so you can expect hair to go grey - like me! You are in the right place though.

Bryce doesn't automatically handle the transmapping of hair objects.  You need to add the transmap in the Material Editor using the Leo tool.  Once you've done that, you should be okay.  If you need visuals, just let me know and I'll post some screenshots.

Is the transmap a separate file? Sorry if I appear clueless.

Some hair transfers fine (color and everything). Other hair looks okay except it's grey.

Which version of Bryce? I noticed a problem when I saved from Poser and imported into Bryce 5.5. Any time I tried to change anything with the texture; diffusion, ambience, etc. the mapping got all twisted around. With poser characters there are often white blank spots on the maps and the blank spots looked gray. Depending on the Bryce version you are using you will probably need to download a patch to fix this.

To answer the other question about the transparency. Make sure your figure is ungrouped so changes don't apply to all of the figure. I ysyally do this away from other parts of the scene like up in the sky so I can regroup later. 

Click on the imported hair to make it the active object. Most hairs can have 3 or more parts so you will have to make the change each time. If you can't click on the hair it's possible to clich on the tab button on the keyboard to step through each object. When you get to the hair object click on the bryce materials button to bring up the texture editor. You will probably notice the hair color uses channel A and the transparency uses channel B. If you open the image texture you will see that bryce put the transmap into the first window and the second window is white. You need to click on copy under the first window and paste it into the second window. Bump and trans work from window two. You also need to click on the triangle next to the image window an make sure blend transparency is checked.

I'm sorry but this hair is gray. You can look for another texture piece by using the search from your start window and looking for samuraihair. I suspect all the color is actually done in DAZ studio by setting color values for the object using mat files. You can go into the original studio material settings then apply this in bryce. For instance you can add almond to the ambient channel in bryce. Just alt click on the ambient color dot and type the values for RGB you read in studio. Unfortunately, it will probably look too light in bryce. In poser or studio white plus almond equals almond. In bryce white plus almond equals tan. You will need to turn down the diffuse and ambient values to where they add up to 60 instead of 100 to correct for this. You also need to notice that the string for the topknot is a different color than the hair and use the different settings.

Actually, the texture map for the Samurai Hair is black but it can be modified in Bryce by using the following steps - visuals, as requested, Jason.

The first thing is to open Bryce and use the D|S button to set up the character.  Once that's done, go back to Bryce and wait for it to import the figure from D|S.

Now comes the tedious part.  It's not hard, just a lot of work:  Click on the little triangle at the bottom right of the Bryce scene and choose Select Meshes.

Once you've opened the hierarchy window of Bryce, you'll see a lot of meshes but the only ones you'll want to work on are the ones directly related to the Samurai hair.  Look at the image for an idea of which ones they are.

The first thing to do is get into the Material Lab and, from there, into the Editor.  Click on the button indicated in the visual.

Then you'll want to reload the texure map for the Samurai hair as indicated in the visual.

The next thing is to load the transmap in the second window, as indicated in the visual. 

Once this is done, you keep doing these three steps for each of the hair meshes, making sure you have the correct transmap for each section.  The Samurai hair texture maps are here:

What you'll see in the third window is the correct setting for the hair.  You can change the hair color using the diffuse channel in the material editor window but, since you're using the Samurai hair, you might want to leave it black.

I am trying to obtain Bryce 6 - and not having any luck with that. I ordered it and it won't download. Is this a common problem with dAZ3D? Or just the holiday interfering with their Web site which is not working at the moment? I hope they answer my email.

VV, in my experience, DAZ has always been very good with customer service.  I know that its frustrating when you expected to get the product immediately, but I'm sure they will take care of you.

Have you become a member (just registered; they have several levels of that.)?  One possibility is that they've just released Victoria 4, and it could be hogging the downloads. I've been told they're fairly good about contacting people.
