Here is a fairly complete overview of Second Life.

The short version is that they provide a virtual 3D world in which people can communicate and create their own content.

OK  but do you belong to it or know anyone who does?

I've never seen a link to them off of any major 3D site

This is becoming an extrememly popular 'game', although it is not a game in some senses but more a way of meeting and communicating with people. I have explored it myself. It is free to play so there's no harm in checking it out to see if you like it. It's all quite legit.

E-Frontiers debut of Poser 7 in Second Life sure fell flat as a pancake. The people who use Poser were too busy rendering and lazy to bother check out SL and the people in SL were too used to their usual haunts and lazy to bother to go to where the presentation was going on.

It definitely seems to be a different market that SL attracts

This is an artist community. I and others use this to display, discuss and learn about the styles of creating art. Some use real world paint, pen and pencil. Others use electronic computer programs like Poser, Max 3D and the others listed in the galleries and forums. The Artists here are novice,  all the way up to professionals that work for Hollywood, Madison Avenue and other industries that need imagery.

I've looked at some second life stuff, and I do know there seem to be quite a few people making good money making clothing and stuff for the game. Which is a concept I find amazing. Problem is, I'm not a game player. Oh I love game art, I just don't care to play the games. The games I enjoy are old school side scrollers, which had crap for art but which I find fun. But hey, different strokes. And I know this kind of game is becoming an increasingly popular replacement for 'chat'. Which is okay and, I suppose, inevitable as virtual reality becomes more popular.
