Greetings all!  Here's a render I've recently been working on that's been causing me some headaches. I made this in segments, then when ready I combined everything. B5 couldn't handle saving the file when everything was all together, and wouldn't render it past the second line of the first render pass. B6 liked to crash with it, especially switching views to position something. But B6 rendered it fairly quick, only 4.5 hours. It doesn't want to save it, though, "out of memory" message followed by a crash.

sigh well, that was the beginning, b/c when it did start to render without crashing, whoa, I noticed errors all over the place! The most obvious is the skirt on the woman. She looks angry and she's got a reason to be: too much starch or something.... that skirt buldges. When I placed her in the scene there was a black background, and the black skirt blended with that, I guess. So, maybe she could be saying to the guy, "what are you looking at!"

  Anyway, time to work on something else then get back to this, or just use parts of it for something else. I like the ceiling a lot.

Thats a nice scene,,,,   I too like your ceiling....   One suggestion if you don't mind..  re-design those lamps because they are truly ancient lamps...  Old submarine stuff...   I'm sure you can come up with something that's like it but more future like....  my two cents...

I can not see her face to tell her mood... the pic wasn't large enough..  I'll take your word for it..

to me, it looks like there is light coming from places that aren't defined.  Id personally only put lights where light objects are defined.

If it were me, I'd get rid of the orange walls and make it a uniform scene (rusty like the ceiling and pipes)  Then its all blend better.

nice image.  I know your pain about failed saves.  B6 is not as friendly as B5 was.  Id NEVER be able to save files that took hours to save with B6 like I could with B5.

  Lights, lights.... they are all there. The light sources are those coming from the ceiling lights, and from the angled wall lights (a bit above those yellow foam pads.) There's a light coming up from the floor where that tech is working (he needs to see what he's doing.) There is more corridor beyond the camera. No sunlight is coming in, all openings are sealed off.

  I did want to make this more dark.

  The scene came about from those old style lights on the ceiling. Years ago when I was studying at LSU, I used to walk through the campus to my apartment at night, and would pass near an old building--the oldest on campus. There were some small windows along the side, near the ground as the building had a type of basement. What I saw was a small, narrow corridor lined with pipes and illuminated by these types of lights. Ever since then I wanted to make lights like those and use them. This scene came from that.

  The idea of the yellow walls.. they were/are supposed to be foam. The idea being if people were bounced around, with all that metal, someone could get seriously hurt.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll probably redo the whole scene, but i'll keep the ceiling. I'll look into upgrading the lights.

I really like your corridor, and I can see where it might give Bryce fits in saving the file. Those grids on the ceiling and deck must be real "poly-bombs",  though they add a lot to the starship corridor feel.  I hope the female crew member doesn't have to run down those corridors in those high-heel boots 'cause she might get one of her heels stuck and injure her ankle,lol.  Not trying to nit-pick here. This is a great scene.

LOL!!  hehe, yeah, I thought about those high heel shoes too, but then I figure I've seen people wear some of the strangest things in real life that wearing heels on a metal grate probably wouldn't be too far off from what someone really would do. Just one more thing for her to be upset about.

Danamo, those grids are truly poly-bombs. Good term for them. They are actual objects, not a texture material, and they really make things go slow after tiling more than 12 of them. I almost regret using them, but like how they look. :-)

Thanks all for the feedback. Keep them coming if you don't mind. I have begun to redo this corridor, going for a circular look instead of angular.

Any idea replacing those yellow "foam" pad squires? I'm thinking access panels.

Foam Pad Squares..........In the movie 'Alien' the NOSTROMO had the same kinda thing, but they looked better, bigger and more up to the job.

BTW.....is she flashing her boobs at the guy in the floor?

LOL! No no, she isn't. She's too upset for that. The strange thing is the way the lights made this triangular shadow over her eyes, like she's really angry. Well, at least she isn't supposed to be. But I wouldn't put it past her.... like she might try to emphasize a point with some graphic emphasis.

I kept thinking about the Nostromo while doing the ceiling, but hadn't remembered about the padding. I'll have to look at the movie again. Those lights at the ceiling kinda reminds me of the emergeny red (or was it yellow) strobe lights when self-destruct was started. Stuff ya see in refineries.

Ooooh, I love corridors!  I had a physical mesh in the ceiling of mine... well, still got it actually.  I went more for rubber matting on the floor though, so I got away with a mat for that, my own mat mind you, in fact I was just working on an improved version of that mat only the other day, using PhotoShop to make it.

It must be corridor month.

Your corridor looks incredibly complex compared to mine, not sure about the bright yellowy orange squares on the sides, but I love all those pipes, outlets and handrails.

i actually like the yellow pads!! (shock horror) they run the eye nicely toward the girl.. i think the guy is probably more angry at her because her heel got stuck in the grating that he was working on and pulled it out of position..thats what it looks like to my unfertile imagination anyway!!

can't wait to see the (eventual) result...!

  Based on some of the feedback from this corridor, I went back and started over. A circular corridor is what I came up with. I do like the ceiling from the first version, with all the pipes and stuff, so I kept them, changing the materials only. There is still that old style light, and i may change that if I can come up with a good looking replacement that doesn't take a lot of space on the ceiling.

There are three, or so, possible ideas I would like to explore with this corridor. I'm not sure if the tech guy working below the floor grating would fit in with this style of corridor since to me it looks more modern than the other version. The older version it did look like things would need repairs often. Anyway... I still want to work on a tech repair scene. Maybe a robot is more appropriate here.

I also want to try for a little space kid playing with some toys in the corridor.

And also want to try for a more interesting scene of a space girl creeping about cautiously, weapon in hand, at the far end of the camera, investigating some strange noise; while nearest to the camera some darken alien/creature shape hiding....

Anyway, what ya'll think about this corridor compared to the older one posted above?

Another view, with an additional segment. The black door behind her I'm thinking of making it semi-transparent, like smoked glass, and instrumentation glowing behind it.

Both types of corridor have their attractions and I'm not talking about  the females either. The 1st looks kinda rough and frontier/ish while the 2nd looks kinda more uptodate and comfortable. Seems to me you got two ships on the go here....................Anyways, I like the latest.

i agree with the bryster.. both have their own merits. that second one is excellent tho :)

looks like it'd make a good tanning bed..;) j/k..;) better than I could do..;) keep it up. I tried modeling that grate-type flooring once, and boy does it eat up the polys.

Yes it does... a poly bomb, i think. I tried a material instead, and that's good. I just really like how light sources behind them really do interesting things with shadows. The thing about these particular grates is that the top part of them are rough... they aren't smooth. They have a staggered surface for grip. The problem is I've forgotten which side is up and been too lazy to figure it out ;-)
