Subject: Question about "art charts"

vince3 ( ) posted Mon, 13 November 2006 at 3:41 AM · edited Fri, 08 November 2024 at 8:29 PM

Hello, i got an e-bot today telling me i am in the "art charts" this week, but was curious as to why my "The Gatherers" picture is being shown as my "most popular image to date" it has neither the highest views nor is it the most "favourited" image in my gallery, so i was just curious how the calculations work, it is not bothering me or anything, but it just seems strange how that ended up being calculated as my most popular, does the calculator need new batteries?, has anyone tried hitting it yet? (works when my telly goes fuzzy (benifit of the "hitting it" technique is that if it works, you end up looking like the fonz!!))

Anyway that's it!! just a silly question today, wondering if anyone knows how it works.

Thanks!!

Vince.

Vince,

The art chart image that is featured is a compilation of different stats that are calculated together such as number of views, comments, rankings.

Congrats on making the art charts!!

Thanks

ok! thanks Stacey, it must be the ratings bit that did it, as i don't normally have them on but that image did have them for some reason.

Thanks.

This is why I'm asking them to give us some method of control over our "featured" image.  I don't want them choosing, because I hate the one they choose for mine.  It will never be surpassed by any other image in my gallery because I won't be posting an image like it again.  It misrepresents my gallery and brings a lot of people looking for things they aren't going to find.  Yet the image made an important statement at the time, and I don't want to have to remove it because I still stand by it.

Giolon I will check on this for you.

I agree-I hate the one it features for me, too!

The art charts or the Poser charts as they should be called are funny little idea almost as weird as the vendor charts. Oh the competative  materialistic West.

Giolon,

No I'm sorry I don't. It is on my list for the programmers but when this was brought up last month, it was not looking like it would be an easy change so I'll have to do some more "talking"...

Hey, Stacey, that IS new information.  Bad news is still news afterall. ;)

I'd have to support Giolon's comments on this issue, even though i'm not overly upset about the pics that get chosen for me.

The system seems to be geared along the lines of the phrase  "nothing succeeds like success". The most "popular" image gets chosen, so it gets more exposure and more people check it out, making it even more popular, and thus cementing it's place as your "most popular image". It's a vicious (or virtuous?) circle.

The downside is that a past image that is not representative of your gallery becomes your flagship image to the rest of the community. Not everyone likes to introduce themselves at a party by telling a dirty joke. Even if in the long run people love it, it may not be the first impression you want to give.

Perhaps using the "featured image" that users choose to use on their homepage would be a better way to go. There's nothing to calculate, you just copy the link. I'm not a programmer but that seems easier to do than setting up a bunch of multi-variable calculations.

The strong do as they can while the weak do as they must.

Same with me. Every now and then I make it into the charts and still find an old image 'featured' that I do not like and would long ago have removed if it wasn't favorited by some folks I like and respect.

This is not stisfying and if it's such a problem to change those parameters (that only the programmers seem to know about), why not cancel the whole 'featured image' thing?
